Dreadstar anyone ?

Comic universes no longer active, Bravura, Continuity, CrossGen, Future, Malibu, Ultraverse... and others that are 'no longer with us' today (or only recently brought back).

Dreadstar anyone ?

Post by Knightt »

I am looking for issues of Dreadstar from both Epic (Marvel) Comics and First Comics.

Can anybody help out ? I already have a quite a few and I would like to pick all of them up that I can. There are only 64 regular issues, so it should not be too great of an endeavor.

I have the mini-series from Malibu/Bravura. Jim Starlin is a damned good writer and artist. I find the art VERY clean and always in proportion, I like it.

Dreadstar
Epic Comics
1-26

First Comics
1-38

I am also looking for the following Epic Comics:
Timespirits 1-8
Stalkers 1-12

Does anybody have any that they might want to get rid of cash/trade/other ?

I will put a more precise Dreadstar list together tomorrow. I understand that there were a few graphic novels as well ?

I can help you out with finding them ... but you already knew that.

Dreadstar began as a feature in Marvel's Epic Illustrated. It moved from there to a Marvel Graphic Novel and then into the Epic/First series.

Epic later reprinted the first six issues and renamed them Dreadstar and Company.

Dreadstar also played a role in First Comics' Crossroads mini series along with Nexus, Grimjack, Badger and other characters published by First at the time.

There's also a one-shot called Dreadstar: the Price which was originally printed by Eclipse and later reprinted by Epic. It preceeds the Epic ongoing series.

Malibu's Bravura then launched the six issue mini series years later, which was written by Peter David (nothing really to do with Starlin).

Dynamite collected the first 12 issues into a pretty slick hardcover a few years back.

Supposedly, Slave Labor released some Dreadstar TPBs, too. But I've never actually seen them to verify.

Dont forget the 1/2 issue to go with the Bravura series.

Also did the First series not run on from the Epic in numbering?

I trade as Dead Universe Comics in the UK, which is no surprise to those who know of my legendary Dead Universe habit.

I got almost every Dreadstar comic made here is the complete list.

Epic Comics:
Epic Illustrated #1-9 and #15
Marvel Graphic Novel #3: The Metamorphosis Odyssey book 3: Dreadstar
Dreadstar vol.1 #1-26
Dreadstar Annual #1 (colorized reprint of The Price)
Dreadstar and Company #1-6 (low quality news stand reprints of #1-6)

Eclipse:
The Metamorphosis Odyssey book 2: The Price B&W Graphic Novel

First:
Dreadstar vol. 2 #27-64
Crossroads #5
The Gift #1 (this is the only book I don't have)

Malibu/Bravura:
Dreadstar vol. 3 #1/2 (a preview of #1 came bagged with a copy of an issue of Hero Illustarated)
Dreadstar vol. 3 #1-6
Bravura #0 (features a sketchbook of vol. 3)

Slave Labor Graphics:
Dreadstar vol. 1: The Metamorphosis Odyssey
Dreadstar vol. 2: The Price
Dreadstar vol. 3: Plan M
Dreadstar vol. 4 The Secret of Z

I don't recommend buying any of these (especially volumes. 3 and 4) due to very low quality IIRC even Starlin admitted that these books suck. I only recommend buying the first two only if you can't find Epic Illustrated #1-9, #15, The Price, Dreadstar Annual #1, and Marvel Graphic Novel #3: Dreadstar.

Dynamite:
Dreadstar: Plan M TPB
Dreadstar: The Secret of Z TPB
Dreadstar HC
Dreadstar signed and numbered HC

This are high quality TPBs reprinting Dreadstar vol. 1 #1-12 in full color.

Here is the Reading order:

Epic Illustrated #1-9
The Price (or Dreadstar Annual#1)
Marvel Graphic Novel #3: Dreadstar
Epic Illustrated #15

Dreadstar #1-39
Crossroads #5
Dreadstar #40-64
The Gift #1 (I'm putting here because I don't know where it goes exactly)

Dreadstar vol. 3 #1-6

Dreadstar began as a feature in Marvel's Epic Illustrated. It moved from there to a Marvel Graphic Novel and then into the Epic/First series.

Epic later reprinted the first six issues and renamed them Dreadstar and Company.
The Epic Illustrated storyline called The Metamorphosis Odyssey lasted for the first 9 issues. There was also an orginal story in Epic Illustrated #15 set just before the events of Dreadstar #1 (a pseudo Dreadstar #0 if you will).
Dreadstar also played a role in First Comics' Crossroads mini series along with Nexus, Grimjack, Badger and other characters published by First at the time.
That would be Crossroads #5.
There's also a one-shot called Dreadstar: the Price which was originally printed by Eclipse and later reprinted by Epic. It precedes the Epic ongoing series.
Yes, although the Eclipse book is in B&W and the story was colorized (a very hit and miss deal IMHO), re-sized (Eclipse published it a size similar to the Marvel Graphic Novels) and reprinted it as Dreadstar Annual #1.
Malibu's Bravura then launched the six issue mini series years later, which was written by Peter David (nothing really to do with Starlin).
Peter David wrote Dreadstar #41-64 at First Comics after Starlin left the series, Starlin also hand picked David to replace him as writer. Starlin did draw the covers to #1/2, #1 and #2 of the Bravura series. He also owns owns the rights to the characters.
Dynamite collected the first 12 issues into a pretty slick hardcover a few years back.
They also released it in two TPBs:
Dreadstar vol. 1: Plan M
Dreadstar vol. 2: The Secret of Z
Supposedly, Slave Labor released some Dreadstar TPBs, too. But I've never actually seen them to verify.
I got them. SLG released 4 Dreadstar B&W TPBs. They are:
Dreadstar vol. 1: The Metamorphosis Odyssey reprinting Epic Illustrated #1-9
Dreadstar vol. 2: The Price reprinting The Price, MGN #3: Dreadstar, and Epic Illustrated #15.
Dreadstar vol. 3: Plan M reprinting Dreadstar #1-6
Dreadstar vol. 4: The Secret of Z reprinting Dreadstar #7-12

The SLG books came out BEFORE the Dynamite ones did and trust me they suck especially vols 3 and 4 they look like some ran of copying machine. The first two are OK due to the fact that some of The Metamorphosis Odyssey and The Price were originally printed in B&W in Epic Illustrated to begin with.

OK back on topic: My Dreadstar collection took me close to 15 years to assemble, (some of it just keeping up with other series, money problems, and just plain laziness at times)

The hardest things for me to find were the Epic Illustrated magazines because first of all they're not numbered on the front cover and most store owners around here wouldn't let me open the bags to find out. Hell it took me over five years just to find #9 and #15 and it was only dumb luck that I found them at a LCS.

The only Eclipse version of The Price that I found was the one I bought and it was also just luck that I found it at a convention many years ago (and I wasn't even looking for it). I have yet to see another copy of it.

Dreadstar and Company was a six issue mini-series reprinting the first six issues and are printed on low quality newsprint paper they have different covers, Archie Goodwin editorials (which are hysterical and are in the front covers of all the Epic comics), and ads in the books. Finding high quality copies of these books are not easy they tend to be 50 cent boxes a lot and look like they've been through the ringer.

Dreadstar vol. 3 #1/2 is just preview of vol. 3 #1 with black bars over Dreadstar's nipples (it's uncensored and very unimpressive in #1) an interviews with Peter David and Ernie Colon of Valiant's Magnus: Robot Fighter fame.

Bravura #0 just features Colon's sketchbook for vol. 3 no story, or anything.

If anyone has an extra copy of First Comics presents The Gift #1 lying around and wants to get rid of it send me a PM.

Heck, I am just happy to be have

Epic
Dreadstar vol.1 #1-26 (well a few to round it out are enroute) :thumb:
Dreadstar Annual #1 (colorized reprint of The Price)
Dreadstar and Company #1-6 (low quality news stand reprints of #1-6)

First:
Dreadstar vol. 2 #27-64

Malibu/Bravura: Dreadstar vol. 3 #1-6
Bravura #0 (features a sketchbook of vol. 3)

I do not have a copy of Dreadstar vol. 3 #1/2 (a preview of #1 came bagged with a copy of an issue of Hero Illustarated)

If anyone has an extra and would like to get rid of it (cash/trade) please let me know. I'd rather have it in nice shape though as EVERY DreadStar book that I have gotten are CHERRY, but then again I would take anything to complete it as well.... I am not sure if I understand what I just wrote, so just go with it ok ? hehehe)

That is helluva complete collection to have.

Dreadstar was very heavily represented in the quarter bins at the convention I went to this weekend. I knew I should have included First comics on my needs list, but noooo.

Dreadstar, Nexus and Grimjack. I probably could have polished off or come close on all three runs.

Soon, I should have my complete Dreadstar needs list... I will probably omit the Epic Illustrated, they seem hard to come by.

They're a major pain to find, my advice is too buy the first two SLG tpbs, the quailty is so-so (given that some of the material that these books reprinted was orginally published in B&W to begin with) and when they do pop up you can usally get them cheap.

Just don't buy SLG Dreadstar TPB vols. 3 and 4 they totally suck.

There always seems to be this and that and another thing to collect and yet, do I take time out to read them... no. Just keep on piling up.
