Mrwoogieman's NYCC '09 Con Report
This is the fourth year for this show and it just keeps getting better and better. People are comparing it favorably to the biggest shows in the country. It's sucks that we have to wait until October 2010 for the next one!
The anticipation started to build around Wednesday, slinging text messages back and forth to the incoming valiant boardies and other attendees to firm up plans, and getting comics ready to go to bring to the Con for signatures and possible CGC submissions, etc.
Friday finally arrives and my plan is to leave work by 6 at the latest so I can make it across town for at least the last half hour of the show so I can get my door pass, grasp the general layout, meet up with my dinner companions, etc. Unfortunately, work doesn't cooperate and I'm still sitting at my desk at 7 pm, the closing time of the show. No worries, however, because ZWH is kind enough to secure my door passes for me and the boy and he delivers them at dinner later that night.
In what is fast becoming a tradition (since we've done the Friday of the last two NY Cons, it qualifies as tradition), we agree to meet up at the best BBQ place in NYC, Hill Country Market. I arrive early and start drinking, and the rest of the guys soon follow: ZWH (Joe), Rufusharley (Ross), JohnnyRnR (John), and SolarFan (Sean). Tons of fun, great talk, and did I mention the AWESOME BBQ? Here's a pic from my camera phone, taken by camera-shy ZWH:

After dinner, I stormed out of there to catch my train home and pushed an old lady out of the way on the way down the stairs as the doors were closing - success!
Saturday, I hit the Con around lunchtime with the boy. It's a madhouse, but we've got our passes (thanks Joe!) and sail right in. The day was a blur of comic con fun: helping my friend Paul out at his Toon Tumblers booth; stalking the show; gawking at the cos play people; watching my son play significant manhours of video games; getting the great Jim Steranko to sign one of his early portfolios; saying hello to valiant and CGC boardies by the bucketful; etc., etc.
During one my swings through artist alley, I see Sean Chen and ask him about the Con penguin exclusive. He says that he thinks there is one more that is unspoken for, but he's not sure and tells me to ask Mike McGuire and/or John. A call to John's cell phone goes unreturned, oh well. So much for that. But wait, a couple hours later, Chainnball is calling me and saying that there IS one penguin left! I drag my son away from whatever game he was playing at the moment and we hightail it over to Sean's station in artist alley. Hey Slym, say hello to your new friend:

Now, this thing comes with a glow in the dark base too, but I had to give that over to John to be signed and I didn't get it back on Saturday and didn't attend the show today. So, somehow we'll have to get you that base, Slym, but the pengy is all yours!
At the end of the day, it was time for Jim's panel. A packed house to hear him spiel on story telling in comic form. The man just needed a bigger room there's no doubt. But it was a great hour that just flew by. Thanks Jim!
Next up was dinner at the Cowgirl down in the village. We rode down in ghetto style, with JJ and Freddy, John, and my son and I haggling a limo driver down to $20 to take us in his stretch limo down to the spot. Unfortunately, this guy may have been living in his car and my son swears he saw him drinking a beer! In any event, we survived the trip and were met by ZWH, Chainnball, SolarFan, Rufus, wrunow, dellamorte and mrs. dellamorte, and Greg too. Quite a crew and a very lively, fun time! Here are two awful pictures:

All in all, a terrific time!

I also have to see about this so-called "BBQ" joint y'all have up thar in Noo Yourk Ceety! I am a southern boy, and can 'cue up some chicken, ribs (of whatever animal you can buy or kill) and pork products like you wouldn't believe, so I'll be the judge on if the place passes!
I KEED, I KEED! Actually, my sister says there are a few good good 'Q places in NYC, but lots of bad ones. I think she has mentioned Hill's before, too, in the good way. Next time I'm up (Oct., '10?
) I'll give it a shot.
"We" all still need to go to Lombardi's pizza, too.....

I've certainly been there. Woke up at the end of the line once. In Queens. Was shooting for Avenue X in Brooklyn. I guess that is more passed out than dozed off. I really need to find the pictures from that night. I even had hair then! And a horrifying 'lady of the evening' draped around me.... (At least that's what it looks like, I can't really verify much of anything)Rufusharley wrote:I actually dosed right through my subway stop.svair wrote: Dinner on saturday was fun, I didnt arrive home until 1:30 a.m...![]()
Not even going to say what time i got back, but i did a lot of walking to get there.
(life's no fun without a little adventure)
