Turok: Son of Stone Archives Volume 1 (v. 1) (Hardcover)
Just saw this on Amazon.com
I have the Solar and Magnus Dark Horse HCs and can't wait for this. Hopefully DCBS will have a big pre-order discount.

I've thought about getting both Magnus Dark Horse hard covers before. It's like $65 with super saver shipping for both on there.iggy101us wrote:Turok: Son of Stone Archives Volume 1 (v. 1) (Hardcover)

Think I'd be better off on eBay or some other online comic store? I don't care if they're new.
I've never read Gold Key Turok or Solar but doesn't sound like they'd be my thing.

GK Magnus is OK but some of the GK Solar issues were horrible - really bad science.Knob wrote:I've thought about getting both Magnus Dark Horse hard covers before. It's like $65 with super saver shipping for both on there.iggy101us wrote:Turok: Son of Stone Archives Volume 1 (v. 1) (Hardcover)

I picked up the Dr Solar HC's as I am on a bit of a 60's kick at the moment (I picked up all of the THUNDER Agents archives recently, as well as the Magicman and Nemesis collections from DH).
I haven't ventured to the Magnus or Turok HC's because at heart I will always be a contemporary superhero fan, however I'll probably end up getting them eventually.

Same here, although if they would put together a decently priced collection of all those Turok painted covers, I would jump at that. That was some nice artwork.Daniel Jackson wrote:Too expensive for me to be interested. Same reason I passed on the Magnus and Solar HCs.
Funny how the list price for a VEI hardcover is $24.95, but Dark Horse thinks their books should list for $49.95. They'll do us a huge favor though and put it on sale for $32.97....no thanks.

I've always thought the "GK3" had nice cover art in the Gold Key days.J-Scott-R wrote:Same here, although if they would put together a decently priced collection of all those Turok painted covers, I would jump at that. They were very different from the covers that were being put out at the time by DC and Marvel.

You're absolutely correct. DC Archives are $49.99 and Marvel Masterworks for 50's era and Marvel Age material are $54.99 -- the Marvel Golden Age reprints run $59.99!Ryan wrote:Awesome. The reason for the price is that these are "archive" editions, so it's the same price point as the Marvel Masterworks and the DC Archive Editions.
A couple of things to consider in the pricing of these books are:
1) for Turok, the source material is over 50 years old! Has anybody tried recently buy a Four Color 596? My VG copy still cost me $75.00.
2) print runs will not be high at all. The majority of DC Archives and Masterworks have print runs around 2000 copies (give or take a few hundred). And those characters and book lines are more established and more popular characters than the GK3.
3) Reproduction is going to be difficult! VEI probably had the film and files necessary to reproduce the comics for their three HCs. I doubt Dark Horse has ANY of the film for the Gold Key comics. That means scanning and cleaning up prior to reprinting. A more costly endeavor than what VEI went through.
Me, even though I have a complete run of Turok, I'm defintely on board for these collections.
Some of the books have been reprinted. The Turok Giant from 1966 reprinted several issues, and quite a few regular issues of the series reprinted prior issues. Gold Key was notorious for doing that! (see Magnus Robot Fighter 4000 AD issues 29-41!). But you're mostly correct. This is a largely forgotten treasure and holds up a lot better than Doctor Solar.Ryan wrote:It's good to see these books finally getting the high quality reprint they deserve, as most of these books have never been reprinted.
Needless to say, Turok is one of my favorite characters from Gold Key!

Side detail: Both VEI and DH have said they work from scans of old comics. Old Valiant however did start with copies of GK's inks when they reprinted Magnus.Steve Topper wrote:VEI probably had the film and files necessary to reproduce the comics for their three HCs. Currently, no. The Dark Horse HCs come up on eBay once in a while. I got them for around $25 each shipped. Considering how old the original comics are and how expensive the originals are, it's not that bad.Knightt wrote:Dang, I am wanting to get all the old Dr. Solar books, but these HCs are too pricey for me, even used. And I am surprised at how many volumes there are... ultimately, disappointing.
Do they have any Dr. Solar comics it TPB SC ?

Especially given how many Dr. Solar issues you can get for 99 cents plus shipping on eBay.Knightt wrote:Dang, I am wanting to get all the old Dr. Solar books, but these HCs are too pricey for me, even used. And I am surprised at how many volumes there are... ultimately, disappointing.

The $49.95 - $54.95 cover price range on the Archives is pretty much what DC, Marvel, Dark Horse and my company, Gemstone, have done. There's a fair amount of work put into cleaning up the old material, and generally speaking small print runs.Daniel Jackson wrote:Too expensive for me to be interested. That's too much for me to be interested. If VEI can put out a hardcover of old material for under 25 bucks, then everyone else should be able to pull that off as well. With the discount I got from DCBS, I only paid around 14 bucks for the VEI hardcovers.JCVaughn wrote:The $49.95 - $54.95 cover price range on the Archives is pretty much what DC, Marvel, Dark Horse and my company, Gemstone, have done.
