If you gave Aric hugs and kisses, would it be XOXO X-O?

It's really to bad that they could not have made the whole cover in chromium as they originally intended. I would have liked to have seen it.

I agree. It was a shame that the cover had to be reduced, and cobbled together, even though I think they did a pretty good job of it.

Personally, I never liked what Valiant did with Turok. I actually loathed the story I was drawing.

I did like the X-O's I did with Turok. I thought Ron did a good job of capturing Turoc, or at least made him more interesting. But I am admittedly biased, I've always liked Ron's heroic writing.

You know Mr. Sears, I originally got hooked on Valiant titles after seeing the cover to XO #10. I just had to read the story that went with that hand bursting out of the ground. I was sure that issue would be my favorite civer for years....... that is until I saw XO #14 :o I'm glad I have a chance to tell you what an amazing oiece of art that is. Thanks! :thumb:

Interesting... so the original plans were for a full chromium cover.
I think there were also print ads for the book as a chromium "card" cover
(which it was) along with a full foil cover/edges (everwhere besides the card)...

Do you remember what happened to the "full foil" cover (2nd choice) plan?

RE: Full metal coverage edge to edge

Post by VanHook »

The original idea for the Turok cover was for it to be the first Chromium, full metal coverage, edge to edge. The folks who manufactured the Chromium printing, couldn't get them to not stick together in packaging. Many problems at that point. That's why the hybrid cover. It wasn't until XO #0, shortly after that, (June after April shipping, to the best of my memory) that we were able to actually ship a full-chromium cover. That was a wraparound.

Others followed.

Best,
KV

Glad you guys liked the X-O stuff. I was always under the impression that the core Valiant fans didn't like my stuff...

Hey Kevin, it was good seeing you in san Diego... what was that three years ago???

Mr. Sears, Mr. VanHook,

Just a moment to first state that we very much appreciate you taking the time to post here. I know it made my day to see those names in the left column.

That said, I will relay the fact that most professional wrestlers are closet comic books geeks.

I say this because when I first read this topic late last night, there were two other wrestlers/Valiant fans near my computer. When we saw the post, we immediatly reverted into full geek mode. So, there's a mental image for you - three wrestlers jumping up and down because Bart Sears was talking X-O and Turok.

It's too bad you could not have come here a lot sooner. We would have gladly put that myth to rest for you. Nice to see you back BTW.

Morning,

Wow... three pro wrestlers jumping excitedly up and down, all over a posting on a web-site - sounds like a Saturday Night Live skit. Seriously, thanks. Glad you three, and the rest of you here, liked my X-O work. Hype has often been used in advertising a book..."the comic I was meant to draw..." etc. but I did have an affinity for X-O that I felt always showed in the work.

Just happy you guys liked it.

Thanks,

Bart

Hey, gang--
Great to see the wrestler/comic fans (of course, I used to be a big wrestling fan...imagine that!) I designed trading cards for WWF about 5 years ago, for instance....

Anyway, Bart, how could you possibly think that Valiant fans weren't into your art? You drove the sales forever!

That Turok appearance in XO kicked off a wave of success fo the company.

So, Duh. (in a good way).

Yep, about three years ago at SD Con...Maybe two years. Time flies.

If I could draw a tenth as well as you do, I'd have stayed in the business!

All my best,
KV

Yeah bummer! I wish the link still worked! Does anyone have the art that they can post?

I was a HUGE fan of Bart's work on X-O :thumb:
