I guess the bidders figured X-O is at least $12 cooler than Bloodshot.

Actually, since most chromium books have been receiving very high
grades from CGC... $80 is actually a $100 discount, right?

I'm really, really, really floored. I guess I'm still expecting to find most of these issues in quarter bins. I have a LCS that has a bunch of Valiants that I'm missing and when I went in to try to bring the guy down, he said he never brings down the prices on his back issues. He has a Turok #1 for 5 dollars...I mean..come on, but other cool things like Valiant Voice #1.
Seeing these auctions...people buying them for 80 dollars....this is in no way speculation. This is high priced demand for the rarer books...especially in today's CGC world.
I'm still floored. I got back into Valiants...what...two years ago and now I'm thinking it was still a year late!
Valiant torrents anyone?

I completly disagree. It is most definitly speculation, there are thousands of pre unity valiant and variant books out there in stores and collections where people would let them go for nothing. For instance the valiant rescue fund has just over 100 harbinger pinks listed. That means theres 2900 out there to be found. If four times the amount listed here is in the hands of aug002, doc004 and other collectors thats still 2500 books. More than equal to demand.I'm really, really, really floored. Comic owners are buzzing, dealers are bringing out Valiants again, and those at conventions are buying. Not those who are already Valiant fans but those who have already started to hear the buzz. Those who read Overstreet.
Maybe I'll recant and say it's 1/2 speculation. But I really think there is a genuine demand for these rarer books that got past just the Valiant collectors who want everything. There are those Aug002 guys who seem to have an endless amount of money to buy books and I wish I was him just because I'd take said money and go on a nice vacation...maybe to New Orleans...Pat O'Briens sounds nice right about now.
When dealers and comic owners are no longer scoffing (I'm not saying ALL of them are not scoffing...and I'm not saying all of them are taking Valiants out of the quarter bins...thank you Mr. I put 6 Solar #4's in my bin...they made a nice addition to my box) I'd say there's going to be a bigger push...especially on the rarer comics and especially those early pre-Unity (and the TPBs). I don't think that's speculation...I think that the buzz about how well Valiants were written has finally come full circle. Those early Valiants were not ahead of their time by any means, but I think alot of today's comic readers enjoy well rounded stories.
*SQUEE*...I just got off on some huge tangent. What was I talking about?...

I think that you are both right to some degree. I do feel that a buzz is starting in the convention world with dealers bringing out there Valiants because I have seen this first hand being a dealer.
Talking to fans at these same shows is harder they are out there but the Valiant fans that I have encountered are the quiet type they get into your cheap boxes and get out when they find nothing not saying much to the dealer. They are focused on Pre-Unity and Variants and move onto the next dealer.
There are still a TON of pre-unity books out there we just need to find them.
The San Diego con which is the meca of all cons will be the real test to me on where Valiant is since the BUZZ began. Tables there run the highest than any show so you know dealers will only bring out stuff they know people want. Shall that include Valiants I hope so. That will be interesting.
The prices on Ebay really opened my eyes though WOW makes you think about putting your extras on the block.

And, in a perfect world, someone would open up a store next door to his, carry EXACTLY the same items, but understand the concept of 'free market economics' and raise and lower prices according to supply and demand....and drive that idiot right out of business. Why IS he still in business?RyanMcLelland wrote: I have a LCS that has a bunch of Valiants that I'm missing and when I went in to try to bring the guy down, he said he never brings down the prices on his back issues. That's what I would do if I were Bill Gates.

Refusing to lower prices is communism. Having someone (usually the state, in this case the dealer) determine that 'this is the price, regardless of supply and demand' is economic communism, and it doesn't work.
Funny...I'll bet he has no problem RAISING prices....

i think that some of the buzz/hype is still based on ignorance, on both the buyer and seller's behalf.
some people are seeing what certain issues are going for, and the feel that they'd better get out there NOW and scoop up anything and everything-they feel it's far too late to get good deals, so they'll pay $80 for an x-o gold because-they haven't seen one for sale anywhere else. the question is, how hard were they looking?
the other aspect of this, is the seller who is thinking- Yes!! now i can unload ALL my valiant comics that i paid over cover price for back in the 90's...so they list their 1/4 bin fodder at ABOVE even greg's price guide value expecting things to sell. we've all seen it. $3.50 for solar #29- Rare valiant vision issue.
many people are hearing the buzz, then doing ZERO research and making what i would call "unwise" decisions.
i've got a few thousand things in my closet (no-i'm not coming out of the closet) that i would like to sell, but i'm not going to waste my time, or anyone else's by putting them up without first finding out what i can expect to sell these things for, or if i should even expect to sell them.
where is that valiant rescue part of the site again? i think i just asked greg to make something very similar to that-i'm always asking him to put something new on the site-that he already has on here-i guess i should do more research too...

Just FYI. AT last years Con there wasn't a single dealer with Valiant on display. I searched every 1/4 bin and asked every dealer. I found a bunch of great deals like .25 each for extra copies of Magnus 0-12, extras of Rai 3&4 for 1.00 each. a bunch of Harbingers & Solar as well. It is looking like I will not be going this year so I will not be able to compare for you.betterthanezra wrote:I think that you are both right to some degree. I'll sell the 9.6 for sure, but I might hang onto the 9.8 for now until I get another. Out of 4 X-O Golds that I had graded, this is the only 9.8 I've gotten back. The others came in at 9.6 (by CGG). I'll send those to CGC as & see what happens.dino wrote:Nicely done, you gonna ebay them? I hope you get $200+
