So it seems....Play It Again, Eddie Murphy
Tuesday September 9 9:49 AM ET
Los Angeles (E! Online) - There are two things most people remember about the Beverly Hills Cop movies: Eddie Murphy as Detective Axel Foley and the flick's Grammy-winning theme song.
Well, when Beverly Hills Cop IV goes into production, director Brett Ratner promises both will be back.
"It's a whole new interpretation," Ratner tells me.
Composer-producer Harold Faltermeyer's synth-pop theme will get an update, but not too much. "Why change that song?" Ratner says.
He goes so far as to say that one of the "biggest problems" with director Michael Mann's movie adaptation of Miami Vice with Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx in 2006 was the missing iconic theme song.
"I said to [Mann], 'Why didn't you have it?' " Ratner says. "He said, 'We're doing something new.' That's like doing Mission Impossible without the theme song."
Production on BHC IV will reportedly begin next year with a 2010 release date, or 25 years after the first installment of the franchise.
Ratner is also busy putting together a DVD about the music videos he's directed for people like Madonna, Jessica Simpson and Miley Cyrus, to name a few. "They're interviewing all the singers I've worked with," Ratner says. "I'm worried."

Personaly I think this is a BAD move for Paramount...This is one franchise that shouldn't be revived.
Movie goers have moved on and I think the BO numbers will prove that once it's released.

I don't know, the original was a hoot when it first came out, but that was when Murphy was so in his prime. It's probably worth a shot and probably doesn't cost the studio a lot to make this because it is a comedy, although Ratner would be smart to make it a little darker. Every movie doesn't have to be a home run, a good strong double can make money for the studio also.betterthanezra wrote:Personaly I think this is a BAD move for Paramount...This is one franchise that shouldn't be revived.

The Harbinger movie isn't even close to production yet, so the chances of it going into production in 09 are probably pretty slim. It's nice that someone has it on their agenda though. Sooner or later it may happen, a lot of it rides on Ratner's success and continued demand for his products in Hollywood I would think.

Even though the first 2 movies were successes, the 3rd was awful and because this was the most recent it is the one most people are going to remember and therefore will taint the view of the 4th film before it is even made. It was the same with Lethal Weapon, 1 & 2 good, 3 awful, 4 good but a flop because of peoples' views on the franchise as a result of 3wrunow wrote:I don't know, the original was a hoot when it first came out, but that was when Murphy was so in his prime. The majority of people I have spoken to have written the Spider-man and X-men franchises off on the strength, or lack thereof, of the 3rd films in each series despite the fact that the first two in each were great.
You only have to look at people like Zeph who didn't watch Batman Begins for years (Maybe still hasn't, I don't know) because Batman and Robin was such an abomination. Where there is one there is many.
It is this sort of mentality that will affect the box office success of a movie and this one is tainted and doomed to failure.

But, will this one make a profit? According to the studio, Coming to America STILL hasn't gone into the black. (talk about holding grudges)Drift wrote:Oh the irony.Draco wrote:As long as they dont sell Harbinger as " from those swell guys that gave us BHC4" were ok.
That series that was made in outrage at the idea of it being an Eddie Murphy comedy engine, made by the same guys that made an Eddie Murphy comedy engine.

Well, I see where BHC4 takes a front seat seeing as reviving old movie ideas are all the rage right now, but I'm not seeing any of the old movies doing that well. Unless they're just hoping to make their money in DVD sales?
The thing that worries me is where does this leave the Harbinger movie? Around 2011? What if all this comic book stuff has sailed by then? I mean, they're going strong now, but they were doing so in the late 80s, early 90s too and then came the bust. I'm a little biased when it comes to this movie (
) but it seems like they would be in more of a rush to make it while the buzz is still going then to let it sizzle for a movie that probably will flop. But, that could be my bias.

Well hopefully this motivates VIE to make new comics a top priority since the closest they are to a major Motion Picture is still a few years away. Now would be the time to release new books [to be taken seriously as a functioning Comic Company] so that they can release merchandise like Toys and accessories, plus pen some deals for animated features. Once they are a full fleged Universe in action i'm sure the offers will come swimming in from investors and artists.
