What TPBs to get next.

Hey everyone.....

So I picked up a handful of Trades from SDCC for 1/2 off (Ghost/Batgirl, 2 sandman, and 3 Conan) and I have really loved reading them. It got me thinking......

What is next?

So I am asking for some suggestions of what TPBs I should beging to read next.

So I have heard these titles talked about before:

Preacher

Y Last Man

Planetary

Swamp Thing (prob. only the Moore run)

Promethea

I am wondering which of these (or maybe something else) that I should look into. I would like to get the entire run, so it is a big $$$ investment so I want to choose wisely.

So, any input or suggestions would be great.

Maybe even some of you that know me..... might offer some insight. Especially on a book like Preacher.

It's very, very, very graphic, and not just the art.

As far as other TPBS....have you read Longshot? Death of Captain Marvel? Squadron Supreme? All good.

Never heard of Longshot or Squadron Supreme. Are they on going new books? Are they complete stories?

Death of Cap. marvel I have heard of. Can I enjoy it without knowing who most of the characters are?

Longshot is a character in X-Men. The original 6 issue mini is a little far out, but it's quite good, PLUS....it's page after page after page of eye candy Art Adams art. Came out in 1985.

Squadron Supreme, also in '85, is one of Mark Gruenwald's best works. It's really, really good stuff. It was a 12 issue mini.

Have you read Infinity Gauntlet? That's really good, too. But don't read that without reading Silver Surfer #34-50 and Thanos Quest, which are also quite good.

Yes, Death of Captain Marvel is self contained enough to enjoy a lot. All you need to know is that Captain Marvel breathed in some gas from a cannister, and contracted cancer from that.

Z, anyway you can elaborate on Preacher. You know me and what I am about, I would appriciate your insights.

Preacher is a pretty hostile environment. I've read it once, and, while it was an ok read, it's really not the best thing I want to put in my head. Plus, it's really, really, REALLLLY graphic, and, while there's no nudity, there is quite a bit of sexual goings on, including rape and bestiality.

It's also quite gory. Dillon loves drawing gore. It's most certainly NC-17 stuff.

Bone is available in a massive collection now, and it's one of those rare books you can share with children and both enjoy on different levels.

Yeah, Bone is really, really, reallly good.

I also recommend the Poison Elves/I, Lusiphur (don't let the name throw you, it has nothing to do with Satan) trades....it's a bit rated R for language, but it's really, really good stuff, like Elfquest for adults.

Elveen - if you are wiling to consider hardcovers, I really recommend the Starman Omnibus: there are 6 planned volumes to collect the whole series and possibly spin-off mini-series. Great superhero series that is slightly out of DC's left-field.

On the TPB front I found Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters to be a really enjoyable read, so much that I brought the trade paperback after the singles. That said, if you don't read too much contemporary Dc it probably isn't for you. Agents of Atlas is a great Marvel read featuring old, old characters that explains itself well adn makes an intriguing counterpoint to many modern Marvel characters. I found it enjoyable - great fun, great read (similar sentiments for USatFF from DC in fact).

If you want something truly idiosyncratic (well as far as superheroes go), then I really recommend Jack Staff - 'Everything Used to be Black and White' (Image) collecting the early material from the UK version of the Jack Staff series. The storytelling, art, plotting and structure are very different from most US books and I love it. The writer/artist Paul Grist is a really nice bloke too, which is always nice.

I think that there are some things that you would really like about Preacher, and some things that would not be the kind of thing you are interested in reading. The thing is, the two are intertwined, and pretty inseperable. I would suggest reading the first TWO trades, and see what you think. I don't think the first trade alone is enough to form a good opinion on Preacher. The second trade is phenomenal. Just go to Barnes & Noble and read them there

Jay said everything I was gonna say about Bone. I'll just add that you can get the complete collection in one ~1000 page tome for $40 cover price.

I would recommend checking out Mouse Guard if you like Bone.

If you are gonna go for Captain Marvel, I would recommend the Life And Death Of Captain Marvel trade. It collects The Death Of Captain Marvel, as well as the last 10 or so issues of the Captain Marvel series, and, I think, Iron Man 55 (first Thanos), which is pretty cool.

Transmetropolitan, if you haven't read it yet.

Strangers In Paradise, if you want something different. It's more like a soap opera, but fantastic.

Cerebus - High Society, Church & State I and II, and Jaka's Story is an impressive sequence of work. The first trade is little more than a Conan parody, and can be skipped, and some of the later stuff is odd, in a not-so-entertaining way.

Some cheap and cool stuff would be the X-Men Essentials. The run from about 150-275 is great, and you can get it cheap in black and white. Essential X-Men has collected up to issue 243.

Last of all, if you are gonna buy these, check out instocktrades.com. Their standard price is ~35% off cover price, and you get free shipping if you order over $50 worth of stuff.

Squadron Supreme is great. He could pick up the TPB which collects all 12 issues plus one other comic that they appeared in.

I would highly recommend the series in TPB's, but NOT the Omnibus'. The reason being that he could get the TPB's much cheaper.

I haven't read ll of the original (I have the issues, well 2-12, but missing one I am waiting until I have the lot to do so), but would recommend the subsequent JMS iteration of Squadron Supreme as it appeared in the form of 'Supreme Power'. Some adult themes, language and images, but an intriguing read I felt. The follow-up (retitled Squadron Supreme) isn't as strong however, and was left unfinished by JMS.
