The Authority: World’s End #1 Out Today!
From official website:
“The Authority has survived the cataclysmic events following NUMBER OF THE BEAST — but just barely! Do they have a hope of rebuilding their "finer world," or is that hope dead and gone? Don't miss the beginning of an astounding new direction for the series! Plus: Part 2 of the John Lynch backup story that began in WILDCATS: WORLD'S END #1, written by Christos Gage and illustrated by Trevor Hairsine (X-Men: Deadly Genesis)!”

Glad you enjoyed the book.leonmallett wrote:I enjoyed the book - a pretty grim take on a post-Apocalyptic earth. The only annoyance for me is the back-up story as I won't be buying Gen 13 (never have, don't paln to start anytime soon), which means I will miss out on a part.
Yeah, even we fans who plan to pick up every book realize that the back-up story running through each issue is a sneaky way of trying to get people to buy all 4 books.
But, later this week when I post about Gen 13 #21 coming out, post me a reminder and I'll give you a quick summary of what happened in part 3 of the back-up story.

in the early days, Authority was one of my favorite books, but it lost me after the English Jenny Sparks died/transformed/whatever and was replaced with the spirit of the 21st century and then there was Morrisons aborted series that lasted...was is 1 issue? is it worth picking any of the newer trades?

People have described the new World's End story as being very reminiscent of Ellis' run. It features The Authority in a depowered state where some have literally lost their powers while others have really been messed up by the world ending.hellboydce wrote:in the early days, Authority was one of my favorite books, but it lost me after the English Jenny Sparks died/transformed/whatever and was replaced with the spirit of the 21st century and then there was Morrisons aborted series that lasted...was is 1 issue? is it worth picking any of the newer trades?
As for trades, most people at the WS message boards agree that these are essential Authority reading:
The Authority:
-Relentless
-Under New Management
-Transfer of Power
-Revolution
-Coup d'etat
A more recent trade that leads into World's End is The Authority: Prime.
If nothing else, try out the new #1. It's very new reader friendly and for someone like yourself who has read the team in the past will already be familiar with the characters.
And if you like it, #2 is out this week.

i collected Authority from the start up until prime where i really lost interest, story and especially the artwork didn't do it for me, but i will give the trade of world's End a go when it comes outgrifter78 wrote:People have described the new World's End story as being very reminiscent of Ellis' run. Glad you like them and I hope you'll continue to follow them.Drift wrote:Read the Authority, Gen 13 and Wildcats issues and thought they were really cool.
Haven't kept up with WS recently (not since before Armageddon) so haven't a clue what was going on but they were well written and good fun.

And if you're curious, the 'trilogy' that explains what happened is:
Wildstorm: Armageddon (trade out now)
Wildstorm: Revelations (trade out now)
Number of the Beast (trade out 9-24-08)

hey Grifter, not sure if you have already done a list of Wildstorm trades, but could you recommend a few that tie the titles together? i used to get all the image titles, then i completely stopped, got hold of Alan Moores collected Wildcats a while ago, which was pretty good, but i had no idea what happened between this and when i stopped collecting the original series, started again with the revamped Gen 13, Tranquility and the other titles that came out at the same time, and i really wanted to like them but too much story had passed since the image days that i had no idea what was going on, Planetary and The Authority at least kept themselves to themselves pretty much which is why they are far and away my favorite WS titles

Well, to try and keep it simple, I would just recommend that you pick up:hellboydce wrote:hey Grifter, not sure if you have already done a list of Wildstorm trades, but could you recommend a few that tie the titles together? i used to get all the image titles, then i completely stopped, got hold of Alan Moores collected Wildcats a while ago, which was pretty good, but i had no idea what happened between this and when i stopped collecting the original series, started again with the revamped Gen 13, Tranquility and the other titles that came out at the same time, and i really wanted to like them but too much story had passed since the image days that i had no idea what was going on, Planetary and The Authority at least kept themselves to themselves pretty much which is why they are far and away my favorite WS titles
Wildstorm: Armageddon
Wildstorm: Revelations
Number of the Beast (out 9-24-08)
This will at least allow you to understand what's going on in the current titles.
Alan Moore's run really took Wildcats away from being an X-men rip-off like everyone accused it of in the beginning. So what you read in the Moore trade is still valid now.
But if you really want to backtrack, here's what you've got:
Wildcats (Vol. 2): Street Smart
Wildcats (Vol. 2): Vicious Circles
Wildcats (Vol. 2): Serial Boxes
Wildcats (Vol. 2): Battery Park
Wildcats Vol. 2 showed how the members drifted apart and weren't acutally a team anymore. And it took Wildcats even further away from X-men rip-offs by focusing on more noir type stories that still payed homage to all the orignal ideas.
Wildcats Version 3.0: Brand Building
Wildcats Version 3.0: Full Disclosure
Wildcats 3.0 picks up directly from Vol. 2 and shows how Spartan takes over Halo and uses Kherabim technology to acutally help humanity. This is considered to be the best Wildcats run storywise by most fans. Unfortunately, those two trades don't collect the entire run. We're still trying to get them to release them.
The Authority:
-Relentless
-Under New Management
-Transfer of Power
-Coup d'etat
-Revolution
These titles also show how The Authority got to it's current state.
The World's End mini site mentions some of these plus some more.
http://www.dccomics.com/sites/wildstorm_worlds_end/
Where to start? It all depends on how much you want to know.
I'll try to answer any questions you have and help you as much as I can.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, there's a new character in Wildcats called Nemesis. She plays an important part in the trilogy that leads up to World's End. You can find out all about her in the Wildcats: Nemesis trade.hellboydce wrote:hey Grifter, not sure if you have already done a list of Wildstorm trades, but could you recommend a few that tie the titles together? i used to get all the image titles, then i completely stopped, got hold of Alan Moores collected Wildcats a while ago, which was pretty good, but i had no idea what happened between this and when i stopped collecting the original series, started again with the revamped Gen 13, Tranquility and the other titles that came out at the same time, and i really wanted to like them but too much story had passed since the image days that i had no idea what was going on, Planetary and The Authority at least kept themselves to themselves pretty much which is why they are far and away my favorite WS titles

That's Wonder Woman's current boyfriend's codename - Nemesis. I keep teasing my fiancee that he's a dead man walking and every month ask if he died yet.
I have to remember the sissyman aspect.
Just got through reading Number Of The Beast Limited series. Will now try to find Worlds End, Revelations & Armageddon on the cheap
I know I'm gonna be reading them out of order but still a good read none the less. Was wondering if this was the first appearance of The Paladins (In the Number Of The Beast Series that is)?

Yes, Number of the Beast is the first appearance of The Paladins. And we've been promised by the creators that we're going to see more of them.

As far as finding these titles cheap? mycomicshop.com has sales every so often that might help. If you get this by the end of today (Sat.) it might help. If not, another will roll around soon.
The sale this week is DC titles A-L (includes WS titles) and are 10% off with the following code:
MOLEMAN
www.mycomicshop.com
Hope this helps you.
Also amazon has some of the trades and I'm sure you can always ebay them too.

I'm an oldschool Wildstorm fan (and another Grifter fan
) but have lost may way a bit with regards to the continuity.
I'll be looking up the TPB's Grifter 78 has listed that I don't yet own (and it's always good to see passionate, articulate fans).
However, there are books not mentioned here, that although not essential to WS continuity are some of the best TPB's you'll ever buy, namely; Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillip's Sleeper
This series is in my all time top five, alongside Watchmen and Batman Year 1, and a book that has converted a number of my friends and work colleagues to comics.
Also, it's well worth looking up the recent Midnighter solo title that had writer's ranging from Garth Ennis, to Brian K Vaughn and an extended run by Keith Giffen.
I'd be interested to hear what you thought of both these books; Grifter78.

Well, I'm sure you'll be happy to hear that Sleeper is VERY much essential to the current continutity. In fact, some think that the seeds for World's End were planted in that series as well as the trade-Stormwatch: Change or Die. It's hard for me to say too much without spoiling it but the recent The New Dynamix mini series had an ending that came out of Sleeper and the current back-up stories that run through Wildcats, The Authority, Gen 13, and Stormwatch P.H.D. also come directly from Sleeper.Zool wrote:I'm an oldschool Wildstorm fan (and another Grifter fan) but have lost may way a bit with regards to the continuity.

I personally didn't read The Midnighter solo series but some of the guys at the WS message boards seemed to enjoy it. But I havent' heard anyone say that anything in that series (although in continuity) really affected anything that's currently going on.
I hope you enjoy the other trades previously mentioned. It's a great time to be a WS fan!

Well that's good to hear, a lot of great talent has contributed to the WS, but for my money, after Jim Lee, the template Ellis set with the Authority and the work of Brubaker, particularly on Sleeper have been the point of difference between Wildstorm and other continuities.grifter78 wrote:Well, I'm sure you'll be happy to hear that Sleeper is VERY much essential to the current continutity.
Hi Leon, how you doing mate?... I really liked Midnighter, and I really liked the art of Lee Garbett for the end of the series, his stuff on the DC/WS crossover Dreamwar has been great too.leonmallett wrote:Th Midnighter series was very much self-contained, however I thought it was a really good series written by a succession of high-calibre writers.

I gave up on Wildstorm after Divine Right and Stormwatch vol.2 ended due to some what that I could no longer afford to buy them and quite honestly I didn't really like them at the time, now that I look back on it I think I was too hard on Wildstorm then and maybe one day I'll buy some of the more recent titles in TPB form.
However now after all the reboots, retcons, and restarts that DC had done with the line I'm extremely leery of buying WSU titles again only to have the powers that be do another change and go in a direction that I don't like.
