Constantine
Just got back from the Constantine movie. I wasn’t really expecting too much, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. Some great character acting, interesting dialogue and special effects.
I have not kept up with the current series so I’m not sure if it is a faithful adaptation. I saw it with my 24 year-old son and he was equally surprised at how enjoyable the movie was.
Also, make sure you stay through the end credits, for a small but fun bonus scene.
What do the rest of you think?

NO! go watch it and spend $8 so we can get valiant movies made one day. I bet in the minds of studio heads Constantine is a big signifier of where the comic book movie market is going. Superman/Batman/Xmen/Spidey will always be around but with V for Vendetta, Watchmen and espcially the not based on an exisiting comic Tonight, He Comes the superhero movie genre is in a delicate place.Daniel Jackson wrote:It looks interesting, but I think I'll wait for the DVD.

I really liked it.
I've been a fan of Vertigo for a long time now, and I felt like I was watching a Vertigo Comic Book come to life. I was really impressed with the attention to detail on the set design, lighting and framing.
I could have done without the holywooding up of John Constantine himself. I really don't ever remember him using a gun holy or not.
But overall I really enjoyed it.

The movie bored me on several levels. Keanu wasn't that interesting in the title role and the movie didn't have much to 'say', both in dialogue and actual plotting.
Tilda Swinton was rock-on as Gabriel, but alot of the secondary characters were so secondary that they weren't really needed.
Even with all that said, I'm glad to have seen the movie - only because maybe it's a step in the right direction for Time Warner. Make more comic book movies. Just not this one...
And they are already talking sequel. Ugh.

If they actually do a sequel, they need to follow this simple equation:
If "John Constantine" = "American" then "Actor" = "Denis Leary".
Keanu was a disservice to the role and the character. Not quite as big as the disservice involving the chewing gum (anyone who actually read "Bad Habits" would understand why that scene was so out of character), but a disservice nonetheless.
All in all, I want to support TW for making comic movies - but I don't want to support them when they fundamentally change a character for the worse (for example, Catwoman and Constantine).
Let's hope Batman Begins, V For Vendetta, and Superman are handled more faithfully.
