Went on a rescue mission in the .24-.50 bins today and found this:

No biggie until I notice that it's signed, so it becomes a keeper (for .50.)

I know this is Bob Layton

Am clueless as usual about who this is, tho.
Also rescued: X-O 5, Rai 5, Deathmate pink Preview, and 2 HARD Corps 30's, Knights on Broadway 1, 2, and a small stack of Defiants.

I'm pretty happy with this one, as I don't see too many of these around.

Seattle con was kinda lame. I'm praying the follow up calls will render some good deals as most of the dealers left their Valiant at home. One guy said he has everything Valiant ever made so we'll see if he's legit. Others have stuff but they know what it's worth (more than nothing) so we'll see what happens.
I did get some decent stuff, no super deals. The only thing worth mentioning is a Shadowman V3 #1 No price Variant for $2. Handfull of Eternal Warrior 4's for 25 cents, 4 Vintage Magnus 1's and 2 Xo Pinks from the 6 for $2.50 boxes. Decided $5 wasn't too much for a Jim Lee signed Hardcorps Gold... I know I know it sucks but at least it wasn't a Deathmate Gold!
My favorite score of the day is an independent book calld ANT. Lets just say she's packin some SERIOUS Kadunkadunk! Here's a scan.

The first issue is good... just read it so I could share.
Without giving too much away
.... SPOILER....
A small girl and her Black father who's up for a promotion at work are pulled over by the cops. Apparently his boss was murdered and he was the last person seen leaving the building, so he's brought in for questioning.
The little girl has a diary and begins to escape the current nightmarish situation (father being aggessively arrested and throw behind bars) by writing about the hero she wants to become as a way to impower herself so she doesn't feel so helpless. Somehow in doing so the hero ANT is created. Btw, she's a VERY smart little black girl.
The book is a bit metaphysical. ANT at least in the first issue is only brought to life after a bully from her school throws a rock hitting her in the head. The little girl crying hysterically tries to pack up her things but forgets the diary. A boy finds it and instead of chasing her down decides to read the diary.
Here's where ANT comes to life (DA FRONT). The action is good, she takes care of some bank robbers, which is what she innitially thinks her father was arrested for. Pretty realistic gore as ANT can toss tiny ant super carnivores at ya and you're TOAST err DINNER! So she saves the day... in the diary.
Back to real life, the little girl comes home from school to happily see her father returned for the time being but then she realizes her diary is gone.... To be coninued.
There are 4 issues total and they were selling a trade paperback but I'm too cheap to pay much for new stuff. If I were going back tomorrow I'd buy the TPB just to see how things pan out for the little tyke. She's a cute kid, you find yourself cheering for her.
I can't help but make some comparisons between Ant and Spawn. Mostly with the character's features and eyes, or maybe it's just that they're also Black.
EDIT: My wife just made an interesting observation. The book has alot of beautiful people, hot hispanic lady, asian, black but the white people are really ugly. Ugly cop, fat principle and hideous robbers. Kids that tease her are white, boy who steals the diary is also white. I didn't notice the reverse racism.

Magnus 0 w/card $6
Magnus/Nexus Preview .50
Ultimate X-Men 1 thru 6 $5 total
Acclaim/VH2 Shelf-talkers - set of 5 different/unused $4.95 total
But last year my brother-in-law, a local antique dealer hit the mother load we all dream of....
He knows very little of comics, but has learned to be vigilant for 10 & 12 cent books since I came along....so he bought an old box full for $50 and brings it to my house, unsure of what he had. My hands start shaking and I break-out in a cold sweat; I jokingly offer to double my bro's money with a $100 offer...my wife brings a glass of soda into the room, and sits it right next to the box, I snap at her...apologizing later of course (my BIL proceeds to tell me a previous dealer told the seller the books weren't worth $30!).
The box contains about a dozen pre-hero Marvel/Atlas books; the best condition book was a VF+ Amazing Adult Fantasy 10; then there was a beat-up Strange Tales 97, etc; and 3 biggies:
Journey into Mystery 86, Fine;
Tales of Suspense 39, tear in cover o/w VG;
and a real nice Tales to Astonish 27, which CGC slabbed at 7.5 unrestored.
I think my BIL made 2 grand on the deal...sigh! For my part I continue to hold onto that childhood dream, but it was an incredibly neat thing to see.

I'm in Baton Rouge for a couple of weeks for a military class. I busted *SQUEE* all week so that I could do a brief first thing this morning and get the day off. I decided to go to New Orleans and check out the local comic shops.
The first shop I went to bags/boards very few of their back issues. In spite of that I found a few books that I was interested in. I ask the guy what he wants for them and he whips out his Overstreet. It is so stupid that Overstreet will not list anything below cover price. So now he wants $10 for books that I might pay $4 for. Once he pulled out the OS I tried explaining the market to him but not of it stuck. So I put the books back. While doing this I come across eight copies of the SM V3 #1 no price variant. Yeah, I'll pay cover for those, BUT, they are of the no bag variety and are horribly dog-eared. I then explain to him that what he has are $20 books that I would not pay $1 for. I think he thought I was nuts. He clearly had no sense for the market or for comics in general. Most of his books are just crap.
At another shop I found a Magnus 12 that I would be disappointed if it graded at a 9.6 over a 9.8. It was $8. I also bought the last issues of Magnus and XO at cover price.
Then things went dry for the next 3-4 shops. They did not have a single book that I was interested in.
After several attempts I finally managed to navigate the Interstate by the Superdome and get across the river. I finally arrived at the last store for the day (after almost giving up) and it paid off big time. Here's what I got:
Prime 1 Holo
Strangers 1 Holo
Prudence & Caution 2 Spanish Edition (kind of sad that I consider this the real prize of the day)
Bravura Preview Book 1
Dreadstar 5-6
Edge 3
Power & Glory 1 Serigraph Edition (kind of sad that I consider this the second real prize of the day)
Power & Glory 1A Blue Foil Edition
Power & Glory 1B x2
Star Slamers Ashcan Edition (#2705 of 5000)
Magnus 0 x4 (3 w/card)
Magnus 1-8 (all w/coupons)
Magnus 9-12
Magnus 25 VVSS
Ninjak 1 Gold
Psi Lords 1 Gold x2
Solar 1 x5
Solar 2 x7
XO 1 x2
XO 6
XO 15 Pink x3 (he had about 7 more that I left)
I had been talking with him about "dead universes" and the "market" the whole time I was there. I walked up to the counter with my stack and decided to count the books that I had. I looked up and said "fifty books" and started thinking what I would offer for the lot. So he says "OK". I process for a second and hand him my credit card as fast as possible. This is easily the best deal since I won that Geomancer 1 VVSS on Ebay for $5 shipped.
That's what it's all about. Nothing, nothing, nothing, then BLAMO!, you get lucky.
