You guys aren't going to believe this. You seriously aren't going to believe this...<cracks up laughing>
Ok, remember this....http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 6505494551
Guy says it's Fine, right?
I figure, ok, it's got the split spine a bit, a moderate role...VG/F tops, but that's ok, I can accept that for that price.
So I get the book today....
...cover looks good, but inside the bag are small bits of paper...'uh oh', I thought, 'obvious signs of brittle, broken pages.'
So I open the book....
...and lo and behold, it's in PERFECT MINT condition!
,,,,
<anyone buying that one..? No...? Ok.>
Every single page...EVERY single page....all 32 individual sheets....is seperate from ever single other page, at the spine, straight up and down. And not just SEPERATE..falling apart brittle and split! Several LARGE pieces of paper flake off into my hands. The cover, which is NOT split, is holding the rest of the pages, basically like a loose leaf binder with 32 loose sheets of art.
Whaddaya think this would get at CGC? Poor? Poor/Fair?
Now..my question is this...is there any one of you who has had ACTUAL experience with a restorer, and if so, is this book a good candidate for restoration? The front cover is in NICE condition, the back cover's beat.
The pages are cream, but for some reason, the spine is SUPER brittle....but not tan. The spine split, I'm guessing, because of excessive extremely dry heat, which is why the cover...being different and heavier paper stock...didn't.
The only thing missing when I opened it up was the *POOF!* sound, like dust falling to the ground.
It's side splittingly hilarious, it TRULY is....I wouldn't have paid $50 for this book, because I'm JUST NOT INTERESTED in books that are too fragile to thumb through and handle gentle handling.
I think...after the absurd experiences I've been having with Golden Age the last 6 months....that I'm just about done with them.
I got books with pages missing (not mentioned), EXTENSIVE restoration (not mentioned), detached and glued back in centerfolds (not mentioned) and now this...
....it's just mind bioggling.
I have had perhaps TWO books arrive as stated, and that was because they were 'Fair' and couldn't get much worse.

I've heard 1/4 of guide several times, but I think it is actually more of a reference point. I believe that as the years go on and the old books get older, the stigma attached to restored books will subside. I believe it already has to some extent and I think CGC is actually helping with this. Years ago, if a dealer was selling restored books, you would try and avoid that dealer and even his books that weren't restored. It just wasn't "right" to sell restored books back then. I use to frown upon restored books as well, but as I get older and see what's out there, a well-restored VF book priced at VG prices is fine with me!!Escaflown4 wrote:
Nah I was surprised I got the book for that low. I thought I was gonna get a real nice deal til I found out the book was restored. Even tho it was restored, I found someone willing to pay more for what I got it for. As of yet, there's no real definitive price guide for restored books.

Seriously...I sit here, and I gotta laugh, or I'm gonna start cryin'.
Look at the auction title...'VERY NICE!' 'CGC IT!'
The GOOD thing is this...the guy only lives a couple hours away from me, and I have his address. Dino, what say we go on a roadtrip?
EVERY...SINGLE...PAGE.

You know what's a funny part? The staples are still attached to the half of the pages side they're on.

Oh dude, that is just so wrong on so many levels . . . I mean, the thrill of winning then getting your GA Batman 11, classic cover gonna-make-up-for-the-slight-disappointment-#-10. Then to have it act like a special effect from The Mummy. I know you were lamenting this as a curse brought on by posting the BRAG thread . . . but damn, man.
This day's gone from

super-quick. If me an' my bat can do anything, let me know -- I'll see if Unblessed can swing by; with his wheels, we can be there in about an hour.
You're still not getting my CEAR, though.

Political differences aside. I got empathy for ya.
Sorry to hear of the recent misfortune. Let's hope the sellers are ethical and do the right thing.
Would be nice if there was more we could do to protect ourselves from ebay's traps. But I guess nothing's perfect. You win some you lose some and you get jipped on some.
I personally would also be going BALLISTIC if I paid that much for ANYTHING and it arrived damaged or in less than described condition.
And quite frankly you cannot express the type of disdain that's necessary to properly convey your dissapointment through text. There needs to be face to face interpersonal communication. UP CLOSE!
Hope you get your money back.
Just out of curiousity what is the first book worth even with all the resoration? It sounds like it may be worth something since you're considering getting it restored.

But I was just KIDDING in the brag thread! I wanted to show off my very FIRST copies of #10 and #11!X-O HoboJoe wrote: I know you were lamenting this as a curse brought on by posting the BRAG thread . . . but damn, man.

I wasn't REALLY bragging!

Oh, and remember 'boxed' shipping for $10? Shipped in an envelope for $4.25.

Who wouldn't want to show off something like these 2 books? Hell, I'd be grinnin' like a pig in >SQUEE< if I'd scored those two books at that price. But to have them arrive like this . . . esp. 11. DAMN. You're taking this a lot better than I would be. Looking at the description of the book vs how it arrived? If the seller don't fix it fast, there is no defence of a fraud like this.

I think you need to find a good deal on a coverless copy. Use your cover and the other books insides. There is no way to reverse the paper being that brittle.ZephyrWasHOT!! wrote:You guys aren't going to believe this. You seriously aren't going to believe this...<cracks up laughing>

Update....the Batman #11 guy's offered me a '$300' partial refund through Paypal.
Allow me a second to respond:
This book is in POOR condition, not even suitable for restoration. It's good only for the cover, to put on a coverless copy.
And the guy expects me to pay $366 for it?
Hold on, I feel another fit coming on....
Man. You know that tells me the guy knew what he was doing all along, and planned it this way.
CGC it indeed. Don't you just LOVE that title??
