Valiant at LCS
HI guys,
I know I've been out of the loop but...
I know that the new Valiant stuff is coming out soon and you would think the LCS geeks would know SOMETHING about the return of Valiant!
NOPE. Not a clue. I said "I heard Valiant is returning and starting to produce some books based on some of their old popular titles".
{chrickets chirp} Deer in the headlight stare...
Mad dash to the internet...
"Nope nothing here"
I said "I'll be back" in my best Schwatzenagger imitation.

Was it Golden Eagle in the Fairgrounds Mall, or is there another Reading shop that I'm not familiar with?

I went down to DC to check out a couple LCS in the north part of the city. Anyway, this one store i go into was perfect, i mean absolutly perfect for finding some valiant gems.....but the guy had no order to the place. There were tons and tons of long boxes (i mean 2 - 3 deep to the wall!) all 90's era. But most of it, in addition to being not labeled or divided up, was inaccessible (because all the boxes were stacked on top, and behind, of each other)
And he had a whole back room full of long boxes that he said has been "off limits" for years. I could almost hear 'reds' and vvss' calling to me.....i walked out in frustration.

My LCS owner allways snickers at me when I talk about Valiant. I seem to be the only guy in the area that still gives a *SQUEE* about it. The only time he has ever really listened to me was when I told him about the recent sales of Harbinger 1 in 9.8. He quickly went looking for copies he thought he had. I bought those 7 months ago for cheap

Tell him you had one you bought off him graded a 9.8!

That's hilarious. I go to two shops, graham crackers in Lincoln Park or downtown Chicago who know and respect Valiant's stories. The other shop in Wicker Park where I live is generally mostly into newer stuff and not back issue heavy. I would hesitate to even ask them about Valiant.*SQUEE* wrote:My LCS owner allways snickers at me when I talk about Valiant. I seem to be the only guy in the area that still gives a *SQUEE* about it. I went to the LCS in the cities a few months back and the owner didn't even have a clue about Valiant and I was able to snatch up some back issues at cover price.Elveen wrote:Some know, some don't know.
I have to hope that all of them will know, and hopefully soon.
I went back there last week and he had two Shadowman #1's in about VF+ condition but wanted like $8 bucks apiece for them and he says to me "Valiants making a comeback". So words is definitely getting around. Good for Valiant, bad for us fans who are always trying to find bargains.

I am seeing this at more places. Valiant commons are going up, when I first joined the boards, one a few places had Valiants any where execpt cheap bins. Not anymore, I see them now in the regular back issue bins. The last few places I have gone, I have seen Val commons for cover or .25 over cover.SolarFan777 wrote:This Golden Eagle shop has a bunch of Valiant commons in their back of long boxes and it's organized VERY well. Problem is I already have them all and the cover price is $2.50 for most back issues.

I've been trying to warn people about this for years in my Overstreet articles.
If you guys are trying to help LCS owners see the light, grab this year's Overstreet (#38) and turn to page 98.
"Current demand for a few Valiant books should not be interpreted as demand for all Valiant books . . . As a result, Valiant regular issues from 1993 are nearly impossible to sell for more than a few cents each, which is true of most 1993 Marlve, DC, and Image comic books as well . . . Many Valiant longboxes sit idly in comic shops around the country because the contents are simply too common."

I've been to shops like that as well. I just don't understand that kind of mentality. They are in business to sell books, not keep them locked up in the back room so no one can buy them. Can you imagine any other type of store doing that? I'm sorry sir, we do have that tennis racket you want, but it's locked up in the back room and you can't buy it.Rufusharley wrote:I went down to DC to check out a couple LCS in the north part of the city. They had some quarter boxes in there a few months back. I got a few decent books, nothing great other than a Shadowman Vol. 3 #6, but the spine was split on it.SolarFan777 wrote:This Golden Eagle shop has a bunch of Valiant commons in their back of long boxes and it's organized VERY well. I went to a shop just this weekend where the owner was going on about just how ridiculous it was that Wizard is even giving Valiant any attention these days.Daniel Jackson wrote:Valiant is still a "dirty" word to a lot of shops. The only way they pay attention is when Wizard starts making hot picks with Valiant books again.
I then asked about Solar and Magnus Gold Key books and with a chucke he said that he had some in his warehouse and would bring them in if I really wanted them.
Felt a little insulted but I did leave the store with three Magnus Gold Key Books for about $6.00 each.

He must be one of the shops that got burned by overspeculating Valiant last time around.sanman wrote:I went to a shop just this weekend where the owner was going on about just how ridiculous it was that Wizard is even giving Valiant any attention these days.Daniel Jackson wrote:Valiant is still a "dirty" word to a lot of shops. ???
1993 regular issues in CGC 9.8 are worth a few cents plus the price of CGC grading.
I could dip them in gold and say that 1993 regular issues are worth $1,000 an ounce,
but it would only be the outside. What's inside is still worthless.

Granted, we're not talking 50 cent bin prices but all were VF and low numbered. That said, I was not trying to imply that I thought that I got one over on the guy. I was simply saying that despite his attitude I did find and purchased some Gold Key Magnus books.Squirrel wrote:And for $6 each you think you got a good deal
Further, when I consider what it's costing me to put together my Star Trek Gold Key run, that today's comics cost around $2.99, that Gold Key books are not plentiful in this area, and that Valiant comics are spiking I feel that I paid a fair price.
