Entertaining Comics aka EC Comics
Since I'm finishing up Thoughts and Images (need #1 DR, lots of #0, and #2), getting back into the hobby (see post about Albedo #1), and in need of some reading material... I decided to poke around the internet and see what other books were out there.
Well, First, I blame ZWH for everything comic addiction related. Yes, it's the easy way out, so like a good politician, I'm taking it. Second, Knightt, I'm blaming him for this forum to discuss DU's at.
Anyway, I was poking around the internet, minding my own business, when I stumbled across EC Comics, again. (**DISCLAIMER: I consider EC a DU because MAD, to me, isn't really a comic book. It's more like a magazine or a funny book. Then again, EC didn't really have a universe, just 4 different stories per book. Regardless, they ain't doing what they started out as.**)
My first exposure to EC was in 1991 when my dad, fresh from being born again, was cleaning out the area under his parents' stairs and threw out some OLD comics to include some Tales from the Crypt. Now now, we can shout, gnash our teeth, and scream all we want. That's not going to change the fact that those books are gone. (I do have dad's Ghost Rider Vol 1 #1-6. Yeah, the cowboy.)
Then, in the 90's comic boom, I was exposed to them again because "they were the reason the code came about." Plus there were reprints in the racks.
This brings me to me ordering those two volumes of EC books.
Who else is into EC Comics?
Lemme rephrase that, who else BESIDES ZWH? *poke*
Anyone have any great resources on these books? For some reason books like these, Fawcet, Whiz, Dell, Gold Key, those publishers seem to be more attractive to me than the DC and Marvel stuff.

I'm in!!
I LOVE the old EC books, especially the science fiction stuff. I don't have any original printings, but I bought all of the 90's reprints. I had an artist friend of mine recreate the cover of "Weird Science-Fantasy" #27 for my research paper on "Science-Fiction" back in high school.
I think it was my love of Ray Bradbury that lead me to the EC adaptations of his stories. That in turn lead me to admire and love artists like Wally Wood (who is still one of my all-time favorites) and Al Feldstein (who I met at DragonCon once - great guy).
Unfortunately, my EC reprints are gone. They were part of my comic collection that I had to sell about 8 years go. At the time I thought, "they're reprints - I'll get them again later real cheap." But, I've only been able to pick up a handful of issues.

Gemstone is currently publishing the EC Archives. Each volumes reprints 6 issues of a specfic title. They are very similiar to Marvel Masterworks and DC Archives. The books are slightly larger and the production values are far superior (in my opinion).
If you can find it, pick up Tales of Terror, the EC Companion and/or Foul Play!: The Art and Artists of the Notorious 1950s E.C. Comics!
All the information you could want about EC Comics.

Saw the Tales of Terror on Amazon. Can't wait for my 1st few archives to arrive. I'll give a full report on them when they get here. =]TheVisitor wrote:Gemstone is currently publishing the EC Archives. Each volumes reprints 6 issues of a specfic title. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I'm out of pocket at the moment. This is forcing me back to the 'bay.myron wrote:I'm in...I've picked up the 90's reprints almost every time I've had the chance (provided they weren't too beat up)...never really had a chance to pick up originals in person...and I'd be hesitant about picking them up on the 'bay...

I am tracking two auctions for some Frontline Combat books at the moment and think I shall start there (since my parents are holding my mail for me. and dad.. well, see above).
Also, yes, I have 3 of the archives on the way here so I can check 'em out. Apparently the originals were B&W and these archives are FULL COLOR

Just got my Shock SuspenStories Vol 2 in and wrote a review up on Amazon.com.Knightt wrote:Hey, I just facilitate the Madness... I don't spread it. (or do I ?Unblessed wrote:Knightt, I'm blaming him for this forum to discuss DU's at.)
It's no wonder EC was run out of business.

Once you buy one, you won't be able to stop.
