My Valiant Story:

Post by MoonChild »

Figured Better late than never, such goes my particular Valiant story, which started with BloodShot.

In 1992 I was 13 years old and I had been fascinated with comics since I was able to walk, I’m sure, since my uncle was an artist that used to create characters using the role playing dungeons & dragons method where they rolled dice & such. Once he had the basics of the characters he’d sketch a drawing & take it from there.

I started buying comics on my own around ’87-88 with newsstand editions such as Uncanny X-Men and Wolverine #1, Punisher #1, basically anything cool that started at #1 that was Marvel.

Fast forward to the 90’s I kinda went in and out of interest with the hobby because I collected baseball cards & was busy playing sports & riding bikes so I missed the very beginning of Valiant and I vividly remember seeing those, what seemed so eternally out of reach, sticker prices from Harbinger #1 & Rai #3 and such. I remember wondering what the big deal was! When I seen the cover prices of 2.25 and such I totally disregarded them and settled for the big Image/Spawn hype just like everyone else, made good money on them too.

I started seeing advertisements for the new Valiant Hero BloodShot all over the wizard & other overstreet price guides and it looked really cool so once it came out I bought 2 copies despite the 3.50 cover price! I must have bought some other Valiant’s during that time period just to check it out as they were starting to seem pretty cool to my young mind. I got Magnus #21, Eternal Warrior #10, Archer & Armstong #11, Rai #9 and The Turok #1 when it came out as well as a few others. I was a loyal Monthly collector of BloodShot for about a year before I moved onto something else, probably baseball cards or something, GT Dyno Bikes, who knows.

I really liked the stories and look of that book and had fond memories of it for over a decade and every once in a while I’d crack open my short box of what I had left of my comic collection and BloodShot was still a fav right up there with Wolverine & The Punisher!

Fast forward to The Present day, say September of ’07 and I’m sitting around with my lil bro brousing the net trying to think of cool stuff to look up, quickly BloodShot came to mind and we found the Fansite and this forum. I was like “I’m going to get every issue of Bloodshot that ever came out!” Thanks to this site I got to preview every single cover and know how many issues there were. With Ebay, it seemed a very ascertainable goal.

Going back a little, I do recall checking out LCS’s from time to time, one time during Birthquake and another when they discontinued the VH1 run, also when the Acclaim line came out, I was mortified to say the least. It seemed so *SQUEE* to me and a seriously bad business move. I was still a teenager and this was quite apparent although as an adult I now realize the big picture with the state of the industry at that time.

Back up to speed, I asked around the forum trying to get a better deal on a Complete BloodShot Run with no luck, or patience, you pick. [Actually I have never seen a BloodShot #51 or 50 for sale on this site, so my wait would have been in vein!] I ended up purchasing an almost complete set of the VH1 and VH2 run from ebayer: a-1supermanfan for 100 bucks. The auction stated “minus #47, 49” or something along those lines but when I received it 46 was also missing not to mention the books was in a dire state, we’re talking some with bags, some not, some with boards, some not, most damaged, You know the drill. I was horrified and disgusted with the treatment of these books and the audacity of someone selling them as near mint to mint condition! Hahah, what a joke! I give the guy a neutral after no response from my e-mail stating that I wished for a partial refund and in returned received my first NEGATIVE from ebay, sweet huh =]

Anyway, undeterred, I read away and it was a great read, even took the opportunity to check out the Acclaim run and I’v gotta say: It was surprisingly genius! I loved it, wish they did at least 20-25 books, the writer was genius, the art was cool, the new look was ehhh but overall I loved it as much as the original. It really elaborated on the character’s nanotechnology and the quest for truth is always cool even though its been done a million times.

During this time I have purchased entire collections from people on the net that were local as well as cleaned out this guys storage space of more boxes of back issues than I’v ever seen in any LCS ever, also some good LCS finds, thanks Dr. Solar for the Al’s plug, I was LCS hunting and that plug cut-out the search for a good one, I found so many good low-print, high quality, underpriced books out there it’s mind-blowing.

Now a’days I’v been having the opportunity to read these well thought out, story driven books like X-O Manowar & The Eternal Warrior it’s a real treat. During this time the new owners of Valiant have Won Lawsuits, released hardbacks and a cool new website! Also Harbinger pops up with Hollywood Buzz! The timing was great and I’m glad I jumped aboard before the explosion!! Thanks BloodShot! :thumb: :atomic:

Good story.

Coming to Valiant via Bloodshot, what did you think of Rai, andf Rai and the Future Force?

I always thought RAI Looked really cool. I bought #9 and thought it was pretty decent. I read the TPB a couple of months ago and it was Decent, not as good as I thought it would be, still an original but I thought it could have been alot better. Still a cool character overall. Ohh and the Covers are the coolest comic covers ever!
