Comics that were once hot for silly reasons

For instance, Spectacular Spider-Man #158. Spidey gets super powers. I think this made it up to $10 or so for a time. But there was no way this was ever going to retain its value, because it's not like they would ever let him keep the powers.

Or Silver Surfer #16 (vol. 2), the return of the Soul Gems to the Marvel Universe. All because of Infinity Gauntlet.

Anyone else have some similar examples?

The eclipso issue with the gem on the cover comes to mind. Also Silver Surfer 50. Was there really a need for more than one printing on this book? Sheesh.

Might be able to add Turok EB games variant to that list soon too.

Nice topic!

My favorites are revivals of old characters that never actually had a fan base to begin with, like the Deathlok Astonishing Tales run. For years # 25 was worth something because it was George Perez's first work (back-up story); but when folks were paying $100 for it & $20 for later appearances...ack.

Also, when villain appearances are "hot." About the time that Wolverine # 10 broke out, Overstreets Update had X-Factor # 52 jump from $2 to $8 in two months because it was a Sabretooth appearance. 2 months later it was back to $2.00. Ditto...Power Pack # 27.

Alpha Flight 106. Obvious hype to prop up sales of a badly lagging book.

Guess that explains Superman 75, too.

Even though it doesn't sell for as much as it once had, the Black bagged version still sells well on eBay.

I could remember a bunch back during the speculating 90's. Remember when all the books that shot up because of a popular artist?

For example:

X-Factor 40 (Liefield) , 63 - 68(Whilce Portacio)
New Mutants #86 - 100 (Liefield)

Also these following were characters that were popular but fell off its seats. Pretty much books that you can find in 50 cent bins nowadays, but was worth around $20 - $30 for their 1st issue back in early 90's.

New Warriors
Deathlok
Guardians of the Galaxy

Silver Surfer #15. Ron Lim's first appearance as the regular artist.

Actually...SS #16-18 are *kinda* limited, at least on the west coast. I looked for YEARS and YEARS (like 4!) for 17 and 18, before stumbling onto a cache of them.

Same with She-Hulk #34. GREAT Vanity Fair cover!

Others...mmm....Justice #32, Joker one panel "appearance"....

Oops! I just remembered, I forgot to give the answer to my last trivia question!

And I love Spect Spidey #158! I've got like 30 copies!

Seriously, it still sells for $1-$3 on eBay...that's pretty good!

Can you find later issues of Ghost Rider v2 in the cheap bins?

I think I have pretty much all of those books. They weren't bad reads.

I do too! I'd buy them in nm at $1-$3 all day long! Great story well worth the read. Those were the days...sigh.

I've got stupid amounts of all of these books, BUT...I buy X-Factor #63 every time I see it for $1 or less.

I can't resist! Whilce actually DOES have quite a fan following, and his Punisher work is PHENOMENAL.

And, you won't be able to find New Mutants #87 and #98 in 50 cent bins, unless you're *REALLY* lucky...they're both solid $5-$10 books.

Truly worthless, once 'hot' book: New Mutants Annual #5.

More that come to mind: Fish Police #1, just cause it was Black and White...

Cerebus #53-56, cause it was the Wolvie parody.

X-Men #184, cause it's Forge's 1st App.

Spidey #209, cause it's the 1st app of Madame Web!

Pretty much ANY Hobgoblin appearance AFTER #251 and OUTSIDE of Amazing. Spect #85, for example.

Captain America #241...this was a crazy book at one time, Guiding for $55!

Yeah New Mutants #87 was never a 50 cent book. But believe it or not, I found a copy of New Mutants 98 for 50 cents in the previous Big Apple Show and it was in NM+ condition.

As of right now I have like 4 copies of that book. I think the print run was pretty large.

What's the special occasion for New Mutants Annual #5? Do you mean #2 1st Psylocke? I still got 2 copies of that, but I do remember when Psylocke was pretty popular and that book shot up.

Amazing Spiderman #209 is also first appearance of Calypso. =)

Spec Spidey 158 will still sell, at least better than most of the other higher numbered Spec Spideys!! At least I hope so, cause I've got a bunch!!

Silly Esca...you know me better than that. Annual #2 is actually still a relatively hard book to find (because it's too cheap for people to be willing to sell now; most bought it for $5-$10.)

No, I mean #5...Liefeld's first New Mutants art.

Yeah, those two have had off and on moments.

After Calypso made her brief shot to fame in Spiderman #1-5, she disappeared again.

And no, he did the Atlantis Attacks main story, and cover.

He also did the art for Amazing Spiderman Annual #23 that year...which, after X-Factor #40, was his first real work at Marvel. Cool, huh?

Ah okies, never knew Liefield worked on Annual #5. I wasn't a Liefield fan back then, always thought his character drawing was so un-proportional from the start. In any case, I still see Annual #2 around cheap bins occasionally. Actually I bought my 2nd copy at the last Big Apple Show also for 50 cents and I passed on them in the dollar bins. There's a LCS near me that also sells them for like $3. Psylocke is still my favorite femme X-Men. I'm hoping Marvel would actually do something good with her or put her in the 3rd movie.

Maybe they can hire her for the role.

What about the Jack Kirby stuff from Topps? You had to buy all of the Kirby-verse titles to get coupons for a "Jack Kirby's Secret City" Kirby Chrome edition. Man, those were on fire for awhile!!!!!

Oh, wait......nevermind.

That was just me. I think I was the only one to actually send off for that. In fact I think I was the only person to buy any of those books...and I did it for cover price!
