Friggin' Malvern
I started scooping up the Gold and Platinum stuff off eBay, and got sucked in by this addictive website run by some uber-geek from Malvern "Brickfest" AR.
And that children, is why I have no life.

Re: Friggin' Malvern
I've tried to get some nicknames started for Malvern, but they just won't stick.X-O HoboJoe wrote:I started scooping up the Gold and Platinum stuff off eBay, and got sucked in by this addictive website run by some uber-geek from Malvern "Brickfest" AR.

I like to call it "The Vern" when I'm in Little Rock... as in...
"Well, it's 5:00, I think I'll head home to the Vern."
Since "Mal" in Spanish means "Bad", "Badvern" seems to fit...
But no one else likes it.
Strangely, people from Malvern actually can be heard saying "Malvren"...
which is weird because "vren" is much too Scandinavian-sounding for the deep south.

There you got my interest. In which aspect do you mean? Of course, Malvren feels much easier to say than Malvern.Strangely, people from Malvern actually can be heard saying "Malvren"...

Well, in the deep south, "Vern" should be a common pronunciation
considering the popularity of "Earnest" movies...
"Earnest Goes to Camp", "Earnest Scared Stupid", etc...,
especially considering that Earnest himself started as a commercial
for Channel 7 where he was constantly going to his friend Vern's house
to ask if Vern was watching Channel 7. ("Hey Vern! Hey Vern!")
(Unfortunately, the actor who played Earnest died....
Now we have some rip-off Earnest wanna-be who does commercials
for Glass Pro featuring himself and Glass Pro's "grandma".
Before that, the rip-off guy did commercials for Twin City Motors.)
Anyway, "Vern" should be common, while "Vren" isn't even English.
It looks like it might be a Norwegian word, according to the title
of this website.

Guessed you meant the way it sounded, with the Scandinavian reference. It does. I was just curious if you had more specific references. I should have considered the one above, though I should mention it is a misspelling, caused by problems displaying our alphabet.greg wrote:Anyway, "Vern" should be common, while "Vren" isn't even English.

How about the name Wren?
Interesting back-story btw. Gotta admit most went over my head.

If the "Earnest" references went over your head, you should be thankful you live in Europe. Some things, a man just shouldn't have to see...magnusr wrote:Guessed you meant the way it sounded, with the Scandinavian reference. It does. I was just curious if you had more specific references. Hmmm... I thought Ernest was a global concept, though.depluto wrote:If the "Earnest" references went over your head, you should be thankful you live in Europe. Some things, a man just shouldn't have to see...

For reference:

Yeah, it is. I recogniced it without the reference. Doesn't mean I know every commercial he's been in or actually remember anything about the movies. I recognice him enough to wonder how any other actor can "fill his shoes". And hey depluto, we have lots of stuff over here noone should have to see...greg wrote:Hmmm... Here's one of my favorite Seinfeld quotes...depluto wrote:...been through Holland a few times ...
George: What is Holland?
Jerry: What do you mean, 'what is it?' It's a country right next to Belgium.
George: No, that's the Netherlands.
Jerry: Holland *is* the Netherlands.
George: Then who are the Dutch?
Sorry Im late on this one, but reading this made me miss Jim Varney.
He used to do local Auto Dealership Commercials here
"Virginia Beach Dodge Vern! KnowwhatImean?"
And I used to love his Marva Maid Milk commercials
"You can get Whole Milk, 2%, 1% and Slendo, Vern"
Nothing he said was funny, he was just funny. I wish he was still here.
