Looking to complete collection,then read...some questions 4U

Post by regero »

Hello everyone. Newbie on board as of 2 days ago!! I have spent about 20 hours so far just reading the message boards and educating myself from the website. I began collecting Valiant back in 1994 along with a bunch of other publishers. Long story short...all my 8000 books have been sold EXCEPT VALIANT BABY!!! But I only have about half of the books though. Now its time to complete the collection and read the story as it was meant to be read. I read ManOfTheAtom's chronoligcal order list and I have some questions I'm hoping someone can help me out with. (And I'm sure I will have more in the future) Lastly, before I get to my questions, Let me say that everyone on this board seems awesome and I appreciate the overall attitude of this place. Ok...enough sappy crap, question time:

1) 1) Is there a story other than the reprints in the solar Hard Cover Alpha Omega? Because on the chronoligical list it is listed after Magnus 2 and before magnus 3:

Magnus Robot Fighter #2
Solar Man of The Atom Alpha & Omega TP
Magnus Robot Fighter #3

2) Are there different stories in the Deathmate Previews variations? B/c on the chronoligical reading order list, there are two versions to be read:

Death Mate Prelude Green
Death Mate Prologue
Death Mate Prelude Red (Pink)

3) Is 717 the total amount of books to be read in the VH1 Universe? B/c that is what I am counting. I am not counting any special issues, reprints or variations. I am just looking to collect first prints of the stories that are listed in the chronoligical list.

4) I am reading that Unity 2000 is an attempt to tie VH1 to VH2, if that is so, then shouldn't the 3 issues be part of the list for VH1 (I haven't read them yet so I could be completely off base)

Thanks so much Everyone!!!

First off, welcome to the boards.

1) Alpha and Omega falls there in the chronological order based on the release order. Alpha and Omega was first released as 4(?) page inserts in Solar Man of the Atom 1 - 10 and Magnus 1 was published 3 months before Solar 1 (Solar 1 falls between Magnus 3 and 4, so Solar 0 [Alpha and Omega] falls between Magnus 2 and 3). You can read Magnus 0 - 4 and Solar 0 - 4 independantly of each other and not miss anything from one story to another. Both are great reads! :thumb:

2) Deathmate Prologue is a very different book from the Previews/Preludes. The Prologue is a prestige-format book and the Previews are flimsy inserts. There are three different colours in the Previews, Orange and Pink have the same content and Green is different (there are 2 versions of the cover, Advance and Comic Defense).

A good resource for such information is the Price Guide on this website:

Prologue: http://www.valiantcomics.com/valiant/issue.asp?cn=130
Preview Pink: http://www.valiantcomics.com/valiant/issue.asp?cn=936
Preview Orange: http://www.valiantcomics.com/valiant/issue.asp?cn=943
Preview Green Advance: http://www.valiantcomics.com/valiant/issue.asp?cn=935
Preview Green Comic Defense: http://www.valiantcomics.com/valiant/issue.asp?cn=1200

Side note - Preview Orange was bound in Previews magazine, vol. 3 # 6, June 1993

3) I can't tell you off the top of my head. 717 sounds a little high, but I am not 100% sure on that.

4) Unity 2000 started in the VH3 universe but involves VH1 characters too. It was supposed to be a 6 issue mini-series but only 3 got published. It's an incomplete work and because of that is not often lumped in with VH1. The intent of the mini-series was to unite the two continuities, yes, but the outcome was not all that great and the execution left quite a bit to be desired.

Thanks so much guys!! I am having a blast picking up books, reading about all the details of the Valiant Books. I have always been a collector and I think one of the most important and motivating aspect of collecting for me is the sense of community that can come along with it.
So...if I understand correctly, I do not need to buy the Solar Alpha/Omega Hardcover b/c the story is already in Solar 1-10 and the only reason to buy it would be for completists? Or is there another reason to buy it?
Thanks again.
Michael

The largest comic panel ever? :?

Nice to have another fan on board. There is so much to learn here that it's crazy. Good luck with the collecting. :thumb:

I don't have the hardcover so I can't answer your question firsthand.

Based on the information in Greg's encyclopedic price guide (entry here - http://www.valiantcomics.com/valiant/issue.asp?cn=934 ), there is no mention of new material in the hard cover.

There is a soft cover TPB (that I do have) and it too collects those inserts from Solars 1 - 10. The world's largest comic panel that Will mentioned is the centerfold of each of the 10 issues arranged to form the world's largest comic panel. That is included in poster form in both collected forms. The TPB will sell MUCH more cheaply than the HC and it's a very convenient format.

Ahhh...ok, so then the TPB's hook you up with a nice poster...is it the kind of poster one might want to frame and hang? What is a fair price for the HC sealed?

And I have another question; what would be a good deal for every issue of Harbinger in VF/NM condition? 0-41. All with coupons, 0 in Pink.

I am determined to complete this darn collection ASAP ;)

Cheers
Mike

Good question. But it might be the wrong time to try and buy.

Just last week there was a crazy sale on ebay. I think it was like $140 something for 2 Harby #1s and 2 Harby #4s.

Welcome to the bored!

btw, I think everything holds up pretty well if you read it title by title. I don't like skipping around book to book like in the chronological list. I don't like some of the things about the chronological list, like X-O 0 before X-O 1 and Magnus 0 before Magnus 1. I think it reads much more exciting to read the first issue, continue the story from there, then go back and read the prequel (zero issue).

I'm doing a read through now, and the way I am going is title by title up to Unity, then Unity, then title by title up to Chaos effect, reading other titles as needed for crossovers, then Chaos effect, and on and on.

Well, that auction was speculative for high grade books, according to World's Best, and not exactly typical.

I was just reading through the script for 4,5,&6 and looking at the artwork.

Big spoiler below

Unity 2000 kills off everyone except:
The acclaim Master Darque
Volume 3 Shadowman
Q&W
Satan/Morningstar
Lucy
Sandria

Unity 2K was just not what it could or should have been. It should not have been about DESTROYING but UNITING the realities, about "setting right what went wrong" yet it did not. Instead, it killed off nearly EVERYONE and left Master Darque and Shadowman in a very odd "Casablanca" moment. Not good stuff

Ugggh....so this is confusing :/ I want to read the books so that it all makes sense and is fun to read, I didn't realize there was such a preference to all this. Would you guys say there is a majority conscensus on whether to read in release or chronogical order?

Also, where can I find those scripts for U2K 4,5, & 6?
Thanks ;)

I haven't decided how I am going to read them once I finish my run. I have four books left and they are on hold for the foreseeable future. :(
