My Valiant story
I picked up my first Valiant comic like most people did. After Unity.
I am almost positive that it was Magnus #21. Actually I'm sure it was. After that, I picked up pretty much everything that Valiant put out.
I remember how high the prices for some of those books were getting. Harbinger #1 was like $125. Solar #10 was $80 I think. I remember seeing that all black cover at my comic shop a few months before it hit those record prices and I wanted to kick myself when I saw it was going for that much!
There were some great stories that I remember fondly. X-O Manowar #0 is my favorite single issue story of all time! Rai, Shadowman, and Bloodshot #0 were all good too. I don't know why but I really liked those #0 issues! The first 3 Ninjak issues were some of my favorites too!
I also was a big fan of how characters that had appeared in someone else's book for one or two pages would all of the sudden be the next big Valiant character. That was something that Marvel and DC never did. If they had a new charcter debuting they made sure the whole world knew it!
Well after a while the stories started to slowly lose the quality that I had grown to know and love. It was also around this time that my collecting of comics in general kept getting put more and more on the back burner. (I wonder if that had to do with Valiant's demise?)
Eventually I kind of got away from collecting Valiants all together. Comic books in general I guess. Those mid to late 90's stories were pretty bad no matter what publisher was putting them out.
About two or three years ago I went into my local comic book store and saw that Jim Lee was drawing Batman! Wow! As a teenager collecting comics in the early to mid 90's and a huge Batman fan this was one of my all-time comic book geek dreams come true!
I immediately began to scan eBay for all of the Jim Lee issues that I had missed and then I slowly began to turn my attention to other books I had collected as well.
I eventually thought. "If Jim Lee is doing Batman, I wonder who could be doing X-O Manowar?"
Nobody
What do you mean those Bloodshot and Turok #1's that I hoarded aren't worth a small fortune?
Although a quick search of eBay for some of those old back issues brought me some comfort. All of those pre-unity back issues that I could never afford were now suddenly very affordable!
Fast forward to the first few months of 2008. I discovered this website, I saw that Valiant Entertainment has published a new Harbinger story, and I am snapping up more Valiants than I ever thought possible!
Some of my extra pre-unitys I have sent off to CGC for grading. I'm gonna sell them on eBay to make some money keep my little addiction of Valiants satisfied. I have read the new Harbinger story and I can't Wait for the new X-O story!
So there you have it. A pretty brief recap of my Valiant story.
Thanks for taking the time to read it and I look forward to discussing and debating Valiant on the message boards in the future!
