Defiant and Broadway have me intruiged-I'm starting to get into them, same with Cross Gen-but other than VALIANT, my favorite DU is always going to be Comics Greatest World/Dark Horse Heroes. I loved the concept for where the powers came from and the fact that, like VALIANT, it wasn't all black and white. The thing is, none of the titles lasted that long. Only 2 series, 3 if you count the second volume of one title, went beyond 9 issues.

If you like great art, you'd love the covers to most of the CGW/DHH stuff. You'd also groove to X & Ghost, from that line. X featured art by Doug Mahnke, P.Craig Russell-fora few pages one issue-and Javier Saltares, while Ghost gives you the first regular work of Ryan Benjamin and Ivan Reis, along with turns by Adam Hughes, Scott Benefiel and Matt Haley. Covers would range from being done by guys like Chris Warner and Art Adams, to Frank Miller, Tony Harris, Geoff Darrow...depending on the series. Great stuff. BUT, also, be warned. When it was good, it was AMAZING. Otherwise-it was average, in terms of art.Smashey wrote:I dont have much experience with comics. I have read very very little. I have become almost as obcessed with Crossgen as I have with Valiant. The artwork is absolutely amazing, top notch.

So far (and in no particular order) -
Valiant (for the time being)
Ultraverse
CGW
Bravura
Defiant
Broadway
Comico
New Universe
Elv - that list of things to keep your eye out for in the quarter bins is probably already pretty long, but if you like Ghost I also recommend Catalyst: Agents of Change. Amazing Grace is a very compelling character. What if Mothergod decided to be a benevolent dictator with a small cadre of superpowered enforcers instead of a vindictive skank with a long-term memory?

In terms of overall quality amongst the entire range it has to be Crossgen by far and way the best.
Comics Greatest world simply came out at the wrong time as did Defiant and broadway.
The comic book world just couldnt support then regardless of the qualities they had.
Ultraverse had its good titles but there were too many that were average copies of average Marvel & DC titles which is not good.
Continuity had some great art but at the same time lacked in general editorial direction.
Comico, Eclipse, First, Pacific,Bravura and a few others were not as such cohesive universes shared by more than very small handfull of titles so they dont count really.
Of course not forgetting the one and only Valiant, who still count and will remain the best until a new ongoing series removes it from the list and Crossgen becomes the one King and ruler.

Catalyst is Dark Horse. Yes, part of the Golden City section of CGW/DHH. It lasted 7 issues. However, the CGW mini really sets it up, while the Titan Special and Will To Power mini help move along the story. You also might want to pick up Grace's appearnces in Out of the Vortex. Then, following the collapse of Catalyst, you have to read Division 13, which sets up the major player in the sequel series...Agents of Law. That series lasted 6 issues. THAT about covers the story of "Grace"Elveen wrote:Chiclo wrote:So far (and in no particular order) -

Wow. That seems like a lot. But I guess that is how DUs work.

My only exposure to Milestone as a reader was during the "When Worlds Collide" crossover. It seemed like an interesting line of books, but frankly, I felt a wee lost because I had missed so much.leonmallett wrote:My only fan letter was printed in a Milestone book.Draco wrote:DOH !!!!
Forgot MIlestone.
They would be Second behind Crossgen for sure.
Lovely stuff indeed
I really miss Xombi, Shadow Cabinet and particularly Icon, although I loved pretty much everything they did.

Icon was just quite simply brilliant. No other word for it.leonmallett wrote:My only fan letter was printed in a Milestone book.Draco wrote:DOH !!!!

I also loved Blood Syndicate too.
The main character fighting to keep his homosexuality a secret and the depth of characterisation in general was outstanding.
Static was really cool but it didnt fit in with how hardcore the others were.
I never read Xombi or Shadow Cabinet as they were later and i had left the comic industry behind on a retailer level whilst things were madness beyond compare.
This made me short on the pull list and so im still catching up with some old favourites.
