Magnus coupons

Post by Elveen »

So I was checking out the coupons on the books I just got, and something caught my eye.

One of the books has a discolored coupon. I was wondering if you dudes knew what caused this, or have seen it before. I can see why it happened, (it is where the coupons hit themselves), but I am puzzled why I have not seen it before?

Here are the pics.

It is almost like the book was laid in the sun or something, which of course it was not.

Any ideas?[/i]

Looks like some sort of ink smudge caused by a printing roller. I don't think I've seen that on any mine, but I haven't really closely examined all of them either.

I have this on my Magnus Coupon books too.

The portion of the cards which yellow are touching the comic book pages.

It's kinda like when backing boards which are not PH balanced get yellow over time when in contact with the comic book :atomic:

What I've noticed is that VALIANT coupon books that have been in comic boxes for years unbagged often have this browning / yellowing.

Actually, I think the technical terminology here is Pizza Brellowing. I think its caused by Mario and Luigi's oily fingers from eating so much pizza and then working on the machines at the printers.

Dang greasy fingered, video game characters.. I think that they were mad and didn't care about getting the' the new kids' books out on time just because VALIANT started the VH1 books.

my attempt at a silly post..

Anyone know where the thread is where the ratio of red magnus coupon cards to black and white magnus coupon cards is discussed?

Apparently this topic was around many, many moons ago. I recently found this article in Comic Buyers Guide # 910 from April 26, 1991:

Magnus trading cards have slight variation
Due to a printing error, some of the binding flaps which fasten the Magnus Trading Cards into the Magnus Robot Fighter Valiant comic book will have a slight variation. According to Valiant, "The printer neglected to add a second color (red) to certain parts of the flap as we had requested. This variation does not affect the cards or the coupons. The error was caught and corrected."
Since all 24 cards and eight coupons were printed at the same time, this random flap variation will be consistent through all issues of Magnus containing the trading cards (#1-8).

I think "off-gassing" from the newsprint page is affecting the coupon paper.

I just read through mine too, it's acid in the paper of the regular pages.

I have a ton of drawings I love that I did on cheap newsprint paper and I have to be really careful to store them away from my other drawings or they will yellow them in just a couple days.

The paper used in these comics doesn't have anywhere near as much acid as cheap newsprint, but it is not acid free either.

I'll have to break out my uncut sheet but I believe the back of my sheet has this discoloration as well.
