Dependng on how it's done it could work just having Phil and no Solar in the long term. Granted you would need one hell of a great writer to pull itManofTheAtom wrote:I'd be okay with accepting Phil for the short term. Yes, many, many, many countless characters could pop out of Phil's head, from Mickey Mouse to the Lone Ranger to Buck Rogers, but it doesn't mean that any of them can or should take Solar's place.
VEI could go through an entire catalogue of public domain characters looking for one that is "kindda like Solar" to replace Doctor Solar with, but it would not be the same, and readers would not abide by it.
They might as well reboot the universe and replace Solar with a public domain character they could control, or even an entirely original creation... but would readers accept it? No, not really.
I'd be fine with it . . .
(I was just joking about the popping out of the head thing . . .)

Look at what happened in A&O... if VEI keeps with the "world outside your window" aspect, then there is no credible way that Phil could behave like a hero without being noticed.
First fight he had with a villain that was witnessed by people, he would become instantly recognizable.
There is some truth to having a secret identity, they still work.
The only way it would work is if Phil became more like Dr Manhattan and had a public identity yet no lfie (forced to live inside a nuclear reactor), but this idea just doesn't work for VALIANT, it is too comic booky and not real world at all.

being seen by the public, again if you have a great writer (like Peter David
Alan Moore, or Jay Faber) who focus more on characters and not action it
would work it would be very different kind of super-hero but that isn't a
bad thing, in fact it would help make VEI stand out from the pack.

I think we're worrying for a nonissue.
VEI must understand how important the character is. Once the site went live the one constant that everyone asked was "where's Solar?!?" and "where's Magnus?!?"
We can only trust that VEI will look into getting the characters and that they are aware that trying to replace them or ignore them would no really work.

The need for a Solar is only necessitated if we (hopefully) do see ongoing new material from VEI, in the form of monthly books.
As to placing Phil in a publicly recognisable position or place - well, as much as VALIANT aimed to be 'the world outside your window', the moment immortals, super-powered beings, super-advanced nano-technology, necromantic energy, time travel, braodcast power, battlesuits and so on were included, the world stopped being the one outside our window. In real world terms, could a being of such power stay hidden? Possibly not with the modern news media's desire for the next big story. Therefore a Phil Seleski (or Phil/Destroyer) residing in a publicly recognisable place is entirely feasible, not as a comic book gimmick, but rather as a logical story progression.

Except that 10 years ago, Solar merged with a sun in another solar system to prevent a second planet Earth of his own making from dying.leonmallett wrote:True.MoonChild wrote:Well at least we know they can START the universe with Phil.

He could still be there 10 years later, and stay there until VEI gets the license to use him.
Similar holding patterns apply to Turok and Magnus.
Turok was last seen in the Lost Land in 1996, while Magnus was last seen being sent through time by the Destroyer.
The moment VEI gets the licenses, Turok can come out of the Lost Land, Magnus can appear in the present, and Solar can emerge from the sun.

Although I think my brain purposefully deleted the last few issues of X-O . .

may god have mercy on the soul of anyone who has to reread the last issues of magnus...
I was thinking more like would the property of (Solar) the Destroyer be available to the good people of VEI. I liked him as a character.
I should have said more in my original post.

Probably not given how it's a character derivative of Solar.Chiclo wrote:I remembered his ultimate fate. He took to the skies to leave the world of 4000.myron wrote:destroyed the entire population of the earth that had just become entirely malev...Chiclo wrote:What about (Solar) the Destroyer?![]()

The only solution that did not involve Random House and Golden would be a "Marvelman"-style solution, in which VEI recreates the character the same way that whoever did Marvelman did back in the day.

Realize this is an older string. However, back to one of the earlier points on Turok (enough with the Solar love fest...agreed it sucks not to have him).
I think Turok was a solid Valiant character. While most hard-core Valiant aficionados seem to write him off (how easy is it to rip on Turok #1?), to me, he holds a lot of value due to his relationship with Aric. I was a huge X-O fan, and Turok’s 2-3 appearances in the early X-O's were great. To me, Turok helped define Aric's character, and the struggles Aric had with fitting in to the new world. Turok was of the same mold…there was a fun savagery to the 2 of them when they teamed up. I'd miss Turok not popping up in new X-O books one in a while.
Just 2 cents from someone who checks in once and a while.
Great to see everyone excited about Valiant Entertainment. It’s fun to see the energy and read the new posts.
