Is there any interest in Valiant comics on DVD?

Post by JLThorpe »

Basically, there's a company called Graphic Imaging Technology that put out DVDs featuring scanned Marvel comics (the company's website: http://www.gitcorp.com ). I was wondering if anyone here would be interested in VEI putting their comics on DVD. Has VEI shown any interest in doing this? And if they do, would they be able to do this for the Magnus/Solar/Turok books?

tbh, i couldn't see the return on the investment for a company the size of VEI. At least til they get some titles into a monthly retaion again and who know if and when that would happen. this is something for a company to do as a dded bonus when evrything is in swing, not now as they are still crawling before they even walk!

It would be cool, but i'd like to see them focus on getting back to monthly first and formost! :thumb:

I am guessing that this would be an officially licensed one from VEI. I think it would be neat but I also agree with Squirrel. Depending on what VEI chooses to use in their new Universe it may be a little premature for them to get into reprinting all of the back stories. Some people may wind up getting confused if it is an official VEI product that has no relation to VEI's current projects. :twocents:

Fair enough. But I hope to see VEI put out something like this someday.

Valiant on DVD

Not officially licensed product. A pirate putting together CBR files of Valiant runs and distributing them as a bootleg product is not the same as VEI licensing GIT to produce "officially licensed" DVDs.

But, the other issue is the Marvel DVDs that GIT produced held over 500 issues of comics. To get any sort of mass appeal, the DVD would have to hold almost the entire Valiant catalog. A disk with the complete X-O manowar would be around 70 issues at most. What would the cost of that DVD be? Given the relatively small size of the potential market, the disk would have to be priced comparable to what the Marvel disks cost to fit into the marketplace. Anything more than the Marvel disks, and I think the audience would ignore, at best, and vehemently complain about being screwed at worst -- killing interest in further VEI products.

Another issue is what IS the potential market for a DVD collection? Some/many of the people in this potential market already have the pirated CBR versions. Would these people buy an authorized product? Or will they eliminate themselves from the market? Either way, does anybody have an educated guess at the size of the potential market for a Valiant DVD?

I would buy a DVD with all the Valiant on it. I could read all the stores without having to spend a lot of money on comics.

If VEI were to release the entire catalog this way, I would buy it. But I somehow doubt they would. The majority of new readers will probably have favorite titles and not need the complete company back catalog and the older readers will most likely have most of the originals. I think the market for this would be limited to hard core collectors.

My Valiant inventory is close to 100% now, and I'm not normally interested in CDs/DVDs when I can hold the actual item in my hand and read it, but for the sake of convenience, a CD/DVD at a nominal price doesn't sound bad. And I have seen the torrent before but I was put off by the large file size. :|
