Just because they don't have the rights to these characters right now doesn't mean they can't get a deal done in the near future. It could all work out.Eternal Warrior wrote:because VE does not have the rights to?![]()
Turok
Solar
Magnus
Who else?
I mean, if the person holding the rights to them had a choice of either sitting on them and not making any money or allowing someone to use them and make some money, I would think they would do the latter.

Yeah, I am interpreting silence as, "we're working on it".Daniel Jackson wrote:I was really hoping that when the clock ran out last night they would surprise us with Magnus, Solar and Turok being welcomed back into the new Universe.
The fact that they are not saying anything leads me to believe that they are still trying to work something out.
I really want to see Magnus and Solar in this rebirth of the universe.

This is my hope as well, but it would be so much better if we could hear from VEI that they are trying to get those characters back at least. I would rather hear that they were trying and then fail, then to never hear mention of the characters at all with no news of attempt or failure/succes.Daniel Jackson wrote:I was really hoping that when the clock ran out last night they would surprise us with Magnus, Solar and Turok being welcomed back into the new Universe.

Unless they are only days away from closing the deal. I could wait that long. But if they go for months with no word or info, I'd be goin' a bit crazy.

I'm sure they would have delayed the launch of the site just a little while longer if that were the case. But I do agree that it would be nice if they could let us know something of the progress they have made in acquiring them.Phoenix8008 wrote:This is my hope as well, but it would be so much better if we could hear from VEI that they are trying to get those characters back at least. The site makes it very clear that VE is NOT a comics publisher, but an "entertainment company." While comics publishing is a part of their business, I suspect that they are working on licensing agreements, etc. So why would whomever owns the rights (I get confused--Western? Golden? Huh?) sign over the MRF rights, for instance, only to have another company create a movie/animated series/whatever (and thereby earn the original propoert owner only a portion of the profits from said development)?
I'd love to see the GK characters back, and am very hopeful that they can be re-absorbed for new tales, but VE's hopes lie way beyond the printed page.
And I'm quite all right with that!

I believe that in the instances of the the GK3, the holding company usually makes a percentage of related sales and not so much a fixed price.BloodOfHeroes wrote:The site makes it very clear that VE is NOT a comics publisher, but an "entertainment company." 2 examples:
#1 Classic leases these characters to VEI for a flat $10,000 and VEI then turns around and makes $1,000,000 in profits before the lease is renewed - bad business for classic.
#2 Classic leased these characters to VEI for a flat fee of $10,000 and 10% net of all profits garnered from items that include these characters. VEI makes $1,000,000 in profits and classic pulls $110,000 in profits.
Of course this is simply limited speculation from what I know about such things. The bargaining point usually comes at what is that desired % and flat fee worth?
There are other possibilities that we're not considering either. We know Dark Horse has rights to these characters - who's to say they don't have exclusive rights? We also know that a Turok game and animated film have been released - how do we know whomever has those doesn't have exclusive rights either? It would make good business sense that if you're going to lease such properties that you'd do it to an exclusive nature as to prevent people from corn-holing you with a similar product (think along the lines of what vip tried to do to VEI). Also, it wouldn't do VEI any good to go around touting that they are trying to get thecharacters to the fan base as doing so would definitely play to advantage of classic media:
Please also note that the entire post above is pure speculation on my part; and simply mentioned for the part of discussion and stating logical reasons why VEI would be tight lipped about such properties. I too, would love to see the return of these characters, but understand that VEI is playing a game of chess and we're just the people who get to watch the highlights on SportsCenter.Secret Negotions with Classic Media over the GK3 wrote: VEI = "We'd like to buy the exclusive rghts to the GK3"
Classic = "Okay, but the price doubled from our talks earlier"
VEI = "Why?"
Classic = "Cause you've already touted to your fanbase that you're acquiring such characters, now you can either pay us for them or go back and disappoint your fanbase"
VEI =![]()
I'd also like to note that the above talks about Classic upping the price are not to suggest that Classic is an evil company nor VEI a naive one. The name of the game is $$$ in the end, and such tactics are simply business.

DH doesn't have the rights to the characters, they had reprint rights for the GK material.There are other possibilities that we're not considering either. We know Dark Horse has rights to these characters - who's to say they don't have exclusive rights?
iBooks published their GN at the same time as DH published their reprints, and the iB gn was all-original material.
Right now, Classic would benefit from granting the license to produce new material to VEI, that way they can make money off the characters instead of keeping them in limbo producing nothing.
