Harbinger video game?
I just had an idea at work today. I remember someone saying that a good way for a comic company to be successful is to have their characters in video games.
Well, I thought Harbinger would be pretty cool as an online game. Think about it, start off just like World of Warcraft by being an unactivated Harbinger and then getting your powers, designing your costume, choosing sides, etc...
Player being who they want to be: a hero, a villian, a world conquering superpower (like Harada); fly solo, join a team, join a foundation...etc..
Cool idea?

The omega power, either have it as a Harada and Sting only power or have it as an unlockable. Like if you have so many attributes you would have to max them all out to gain it. Gain attribute points after defeating enemies. The Harbinger wrote:How would they do the Omega powers though? The possibilities were limitless for what Sting and Harada could do.
I do like the idea though. The bosses could be Rock, Weasel, Blast, Spikeman, etc.

I would prefer the idea of a Legends or Ultimate Alliance style game. As far as Omega powers they could work it like SW Galaxies, if I am not mistaken certain people were randomly able to become Jedi or force sensitive. It was just one of those things that happened. Please correct me if I am wrong as I have not actually played the game. I remember reading an article when the game was coming out that something to this effect.

I vote for just make it incredibly, insanely hard to get. That way everyone has a chance to get the power but not everyone will.ThrillKillWill wrote:I would prefer the idea of a Legends or Ultimate Alliance style game. It didn't work for Acclaim Comicssteverino wrote:I just had an idea at work today. I remember someone saying that a good way for a comic company to be successful is to have their characters in video games.

As for whether Harbinger could make a good video game, well, certainly; group dynamics, interesting powers, numerous and interesting foes. But these are qualities that can be found in a lot of more well known comics (which is why Marvel and DC team games exist), or simply invented (Freedom Force for example).
As for whether a video game could be a good respresentation of Harbinger, that's a different matter.
What was interesting about Harbinger was the developing relationships between credible teenagers in an interesting dramatic situation. Games have trouble balancing story delivery and gameplay (although it can be done well, it rarely is) and the 'weight' of a good Harbinger story might be difficult to carry in an action game.
I'm not dismissing the idea at all, just making observations.

I agree with everyone who wants to make it the x-men legends / Ultimate Allaince way. It would make for a better game (since comics are more about story, and it's very hard to keep a story flowing in MMO's) and I don't think that Valiant has anywhere near the market share it would need to successfully launch something that would require people to pay a monthly fee for. Maybe if it was done Guild Wars style, then people might just play it because there's no fee... even if they don't know what a "Harbinger" is.
It was insanely difficult to get Jedi status in SW Galaxies. At first they didn't give any indication of how to do it... and nobody did do it until the game had been out for months.ThrillKillWill wrote:I would prefer the idea of a Legends or Ultimate Alliance style game. Harbinger Wars would be an interesting storyline to set the game (different factions; Hard Corps, Egg breakers, Renegades, Armorines, etc.)... but I think it would be overly ambitious to set up a MMORPG as the first outing.
An X-men Legends/Ultimate Alliance would work better with the storyline either being Unity or building up and including Unity.

I have a couple of friends that were severely addicted to that game.Asharad wrote:The game exists. It's called City of Heros/City of Villians. Except it's not in the valiant universe.
The character creator is great fun. Pretty much if you can imagine it, you can make it. My wife and I spent day after day making new characters.
I think they still play but aren't as into it as they were.

It wouldn't have to follow the comic exactly . . . but I would like to see a platform style game of X-O Manowar.
The game opens with Aric enslaved on the Spider Alien ship. The first 3 levels could be just various stages of exploring the ship, trying to find the x-O armor and killing spider aliens. You start with a bone weapon and graduate to what you find or steal from the aliens along the way . . .
Then when you get the armor you graduate from "in armor" hand to hand combat, to a sword created by the armor then various levels of energy blasts from the armor.
After you destroy the first ship, rather than going back to earth I would have him hunt down more spider aliens in space, even have him trying to find the home world . . .
I would play it . . .

That is not hard. Just tedious. That's good. It means that it's already a winning formula.Asharad wrote:The game exists. It's called City of Heros/City of Villians. Except it's not in the valiant universe.

I'm not sure what you can do with games today. My impression was that you could take a game from a retail store and play it solo at home AS WELL as play it with people online (at least a few games). I assume you can do both.
One thing I noticed about City of Heroes/City of Villains was you were one or the other. Can you not crossover? What if a member of a group turned on the others. What if one was a spy for another group on the other side?
I think the idea of a Harbinger online or home game has a heck of a lot of possibilities. Also, wouldn't it be cool it other elements of the Valiant Universe were put in there, like the Darque force? Characters walk into a certain neighborhood and they get overrun by zombies (or villians gain power through mystical means). I think that'd be cool, face harbinger powers AND dark forces too.
I think it's a cool concept.
BTW: I'm dreadfully sick right now with either the flu, a cold, or the new improved black plaque. So please excuse me if I don't make a whole lot of sense (or if I make more sense than I usually do).
