Got this gem today and I've never seen a cleaner copy of this and I've seen two 9.8's up close. Sending off to CGC soon Top left corner appears to show a lil white but up close its flawless

Looks like a 9.8 to me. It's a nice looking book tho.

I had a Wolverine #10 in CGC 9.8, and it may be the scan, but my Wolvy 10 looked better than that S-M...

Not a chance. Not Spiderman #1 Platinum.

Fingerprints?

Scuffs?

Oh, and how much did you pay?

Trust me on this - you want to show it off after it comes back, not before.

Well, I posted because I'm pretty AR about grading my own books before sending them to CGC/PGX. Especially this book. Not only because of the cost but the back cover is black/glossy and usually has some sort of scuff marks or fingerprints. The spine on almost every copy also seems to always look worn. I took some macro pics if anyone wants an email to see for themselves, (but more for my record, due to a few books sent to CGC that have come back worse for the wear)...I'm telling you, the back cover is spotless and the spine is very tight.

I was nervous before I recieved it eventhough I recieved a large scan from the owner, you never really can tell from a pic. After looking it over, I'm confident its at least a 9.8.

Always assume the books are in worse shape than you think, then you can be pleasantly surprised when they come back better than you thought was possible.

The good thing about this book, of course, is that fingerprints are easily wiped off with a very soft (like for eyeglasses) cloth.

Yes, you never really can tell from a pic. :)

There's a reason there are only 8 9.8s on the census. 9.9 or 10? Honestly? Because of the manufacturing of that book, I truly don't think a 10 is possible, or ever WAS possible....MAYBE a 9.9 somewhere, MAYBE....but doubtful...heavy cardboard makes a clean spine edge nearly impossible.

And this is one of those books that was bagged, boarded, and saved from Day 1.

I'd love to see it in person.....

Grrrr....I called CGC on the status of the order that included this book and they said they graded it but cannot give me the grade over the phone or via email. I've ordered many times before and they have. :?

As for potential grades, it is obviously a really nice book. I think you will get dinged for it being very slightly off-center on the front, and there seems too be some "whiteness" along the top right edge of the back cover. FWIW (for what it's worth, ZWH), I personally don't think you have a shot at 10.0. I would put my money on 9.8 with a 10% chance at 9.9 and 20% chance at 9.6.

CGC goes easier on Moderns, Marvels in particular. I see color breaks along the spine, but I've also seen Moderns with color breaks on the spine get a 9.6. Look at the DRACULA #70 on the www.pedigreecomics.com website, for example. My personal guess would be a 9.2...with CGC you NEVER know for sure. There are many UNFAIR factors that could cause your book to grade several points higher or lower, depending on who is grading, and who is checking the original graders notes. Good Luck!

I have heard people say things like this before, but doesn't this just negate CGC as a reliable entity? I mean, isn't that what their existence is all about...consistency? I find it hard to believe that they are easier on Moderns and even harder to believe they are easier on Marvels in general. In fact, almost every other statement like this that I have heard before has claimed that CGC is easier on OLDER books, not the more recent ones. There is no way they will be 100% consistent all the time (I myself am not with my own books), but they would never have gotten as big as they are without a pretty good level of reliability.

If you find it hard to believe, may I suggest you write directly to Doug Schmell of Pedigree comics, and ask him yourself. Not only does he own the highest graded Marvel collection on the planet, he was also one of the dealers CGC contacted when they first started up. CGC isn't some unfailing entity. It is run by humans. Your books are graded by humans. Humans make mistakes EVERYDAY. Time and experience on your part will prove my words true. When I personally delivered some books to CGC, the head of the pedigree/restoration, Mark H., told me he hardly ever wears archival gloves when handling books. Just that set of 'bells and whistles' in my head. When someone who is supposed to care for comics has a lesser care about your books than you do, I smell a problem in the works. JMHO.

I could be 100% wrong. I'm just going by your scan. It is hard to see just what the spine looks like. It appears to have color breaks along it. Does it? If so, that is going to lessen your grade. If it's just your scan, and the spine is fine and supple, you could grade in the high 9's.
