RIP Dragon's Lair, Dayton, OH

Post by Byrneout »

For those who have heard of the Dragon's Lair, it's a comic/gaming/book/memorabilia store in Dayton, Ohio that's been around for 30 years at the same location. Yesterday, they closed their doors for the final time in a very sad moment for me and my friend, who hadn't been to the store in about ten years (we drove up there yesterday on a lark).

The good news is that I found a whole bunch of Valiant stock there, and was able to fill some holes in my secondary collection (including several gold issues for CHEAP).

In an ironic twist, I found a printout of an email that had been folded and placed behind the board in one of the books I purchased - the email was from board member soundoftheuniverse (Leo? I think...) and was requesting if they had certain books in stock.

I could tell many a story about Dragon's Lair & me....I have mixed feelings about their closing....I sold my first comic collection to them back in 1976...What are they doing with all their stock, which included tons of hardbacks & movie posters? I'd go back & buy their Gnome Press Conan's if I knew they were discounted from the steep prices they had on them...---Steve

A lot of the stock was DEEPLY discounted, and I walked away with a lot more than just Valiants.

However, I believe that most of the stock is being divided into Auction lots and things that the owners intend to keep. If you really wanted anything specific before it went to auction, you needed to have made it down there by yesterday, sadly.

That place was a treasure trove, and it was being emptied even as we shopped. Honestly, if I'd had more money...

This thread is a real bummer. Dragon's Lair was never my primary shop, but I've spent a lot of money there over the years I lived close. I was back in Dayton for Christmas and stopped by, but they were closed due to the crazy snow (like everything else downtown was). They always had an annual sale where every comic in the store was $1 and I remember walking out wth Alan Moore's full Swamp Thing run for well under a hundred bucks.

:!: I would of helped clear them out had I known they were selling books at DEEP discounts!

I've only been in the store once or twice in the 15 years I've lived here in Dayton, but still sorry to hear they're gone.

I hadn't heard of their closing before this or I probably would have gone down there as well.
