Re-Reading Ninjak

Post by ManofTheAtom »

I just re-read the first three issues today and I gotta say, it's not as bad as I remembered it, it's actually pretty good.

I always liked Joe Q art, it's very distinctive.

But I just recently re-read the Blackwater arc (issue 1 & 2). Too my surprise it did hold up pretty well. Well enough I read the rest of the first year and for what its worth, it was an enjoyable read.

I think there is a lot of stories left to tell with this character in the new VEI Universe, provided no one mentions a video game.

I know the mere mention of Deathmate pretty much puts me in the Majority - but I always liked how they made Ninjak Harada's personal body guard: I thought that was a nice place for that character.

I liked Ninjak. I thought the end was good.

Actually #26 left me wanting more. I was bummed that it was over.

#26 = GREAT cover!

I like that too. DM Blue and Black were by far the best issues of the crossover.

I wouldn't mind seeing the VH 2 characters show up as background extras in VEI.

Like Donovan and Renata could become Aric's tech support, Denny Meechum could work at the comic book store Faith gets her comics from (freedom fighter or not, in her 30's or not, Faith STILL buys comic books), Raymond Garrison as Bloodshot 2.0, etc, etc... stuff like that.

Would that be Faith Zepplin Edition, or Harbinger:Acts of God Faith? :hm:

I said that she collects comics, not that she gives it away for free in the street corner, so clearly I mean the VH 1 version :thumb:

It's always struck me that some of the post-Unity VALIANT like Ninjak, Dr. Mirgage, Eternal Warrior and Bloodshot, were books, unlike Magnus, Solar and XO, which not only stayed good to the end, but in some ways, got even better as they went along. I know some didn't like the changes in Bloodshot, but I just went along with it. I think Dr. Mirgage suffered the most of these, but Ninjak...what can I say. I wish there had been more. The stories had become varied and there was finally a connection to the character for me, as a reader. I think it was the two part 0 & 00 origin that got me hooked. Then, Gonzalez knocked the book into another level and-it was OVER? That sucked.

Haven't ever read the later Ninjaks, but I remember liking the #0 and 00 issues by Mark Moretti (i think). Had more of an int'l intrigue/espionage thing going.

I remember reading at the time that Moretti traveled to Japan to research the story (or that he used a trip to Japan as inspiration for the story, something like that).

yeah I remember the art being pretty detailed and accurate looking. Not flashy like Quesada, but it felt more VALIANT :thumb: I'll have to dig those 2 out

reconsidered.
It's just because it was such a big deal when Ninjak came out. They hyped it nonstop, then it lasted for 2 late issues. What a joke. I don't hate Quesada's early art, but he has always been more hype than substance. Opposite of what VALIANT should stand for.

But who needs an excuse to "bag" on Joe Quesadilla? He makes it real easy, lol

I have to say . . at that point I loved Q's work on Ninjak . . .

The promo piece of art and the first few covers are still among my favorites . . .

I like the promo for issue 2, the skull with the water... but in general the art seems messy to me, and the bodies are way out of proportion.

Quesada doesn't deserve to be connected with Ninjak the way he is. He was a lazy penciller who was fired for being unable to meet deadlines after only two issues.

Mark Moretti is the one that deserves any accolades from Ninjak
