I discovered Valiant in a fish market....

Post by GJB »

Ok, so it was an out of business fish market converted to a comic book shop, but they did use the old display cases for their books. The story goes this guy was selling his collection and he had queen clueless running the shop. I should tell you how much I spent on an ASM #7, 129 and IH #181 from this lady. Lets just say it was close to robbery. He had a beat up AF #15 for $300. I wish I would have bought that one.

Anyway, I was checking out the usual books of the day, punishers, asm's, etc.. and I spy in one of the cases, which was missing the glass, a copy of Solar #1. I pick it up and do a quick scan. The art and story grab me right away. I buy it. Next month, no number 2! I asked her when could I expect to see it, she didn't know, it never came. Oh well, I lived out on the east end of Long Island at the time and the only other CS was Port Comics and Cards about an hour away in Port Jeff, so,at that age, this place was my only mecca for books. Ok, so month three rolls around and there it is, issue number three. I buy it. Her shop went out of business the following month so that was the last of it.

A year goes by and I read in the comic's buyer's guide that Valiant is huge and everyone wants them because of the stories. I read about Solar and right away I thought, I wonder if the issues I bought a year ago were Valiants? Sure enough they were. I searched high and low for pre unity issues for the next year. Eventually I lose interest.

Fast forward to October 03. I'm storing my stuff because my wife and I are shacking up with her parents for a few months while our house gets built. I moved my comics to the storage unit and as I'm leaving, I open up a short box and pull out Magnus #1. I read it and for the next 2 hours, I'm sitting in a storage facility reading valiants. I brought them back to her parents and they were the only thing that kept me sane for the next five months.....and I was reinfected with the valiant bug!

It ends soon.....I find this site through a google search and the rest is history. I have greatly expanded my collection by effectively clearing out the LCS's in the Pittsburgh area.

:D The hunt continues...................and my wife keeps yelling at me...but it's worth it. :thumb:

Thanks for reading.
