Caniac's story

Post by caniac »

My story starts when I was 11 I think in 1991 back in the good ol days when you could buy comics at the grocery store. I was into Spiderman, Ghost Rider and Darkhawk, but unfortunately VALIANT was not on my radar. I have to admit though baseball cards were my thing during that time, but I still enjoyed comics.

Fast forward like two years or so and VALIANT was all the rave and I can remember going to my LCS (VALIANTS were not at the grocery stores) but luckily I could ride my bike to my LCS. I lived in FL at the time. I picked up Harbinger 13 and Magnus 21 and read through them... the most pronounced thing that I can remember about them were the colors and the art... it was so different than anything else. I was just memorized. VALIANT was my new thing. And my pull list consisted of VALIANTS and Spiderman. I remember so distinctly drooling over Harbinger 1 and Magnus 12... but they were way out of my league.

Well not too long after that my dad got relocated to NC in 1995 and there were no LCS in my area and comics fell off my radar, actually all collectibles fell off. I was in high school and there were more important things on my mind like girls and green stuff.

That brings me to were I am today. I was just finishing up my graduate degree in 2006 and was using ebay regularly to buy collectibles (I had discovered ebay like two years earlier to buy old baseball cards, 1933 Goudeys mainly, and garbage pail kids, don't laugh they were a great part of my childhood, but no comics though. Well something hit me, I just remember sitting in the lab at the computer and VALIANT crossed my mind and I remembered Harbinger 1 and Magnus 12 and how in awe I was over them, so I decided to take a look. I really wanted those two comics I dreamed of when I was a kids... Harbinger 1 and Magnus 12 so those were the first ones I got and thought that would be enough... lol... well it is pretty much all a blur since then... no more baseball cards or garbage pail kids... all comics mainly VALIANT, my new yet old obsession.

I have almost all pre-unities minus like 10 or so and have been lurking on here for like 4 or 5 months (it was great when I found this site... I was like wow there are more people like me... the wonders of the internet... so I finally decided to join today and figured I should start first by telling my story. Thanks for letting me share.

Welcome to the boards.

Were you surprised at the prices you paid for those two comics?

I remember being very excited upon the release of Darkhawk 33, but not why I was so happy for that issue.
