Recommend a Comic
ok in this thread recommend one current comic you enjoy and why.
District X
I haven't read an 'X' title since the mid-90's, but I picked up the first three issues on a recommendation when the new comics didn't come in. The creators are unknowns to me (David Yardin and David Hine) but I was very impressed at their skill and craft. No pin-ups and spreads, just good old-fashioned storytelling with a lot of grid layouts with a focus on character, expression, and backgrounds.
The first story arc is a 6-parter (part 6 is the most recent issue) and it's a much more creative look at mutants than I have seen in the past. It's basically a cop/detective drama with mutants, but the mutants aren't just a sideline, they're a main component to the unfolding plot and dramas. I was most impressed that the characters are well defined and interesting, and I was most disappointed that 2 of the 6 issues have fill in artists. The artists do a good job capturing the same feel, but it still makes for a more inconsistent experience.
Anyone else?

Demo
Brian Wood's Demo really gets me. The 12 issue arc is wrapping up in December, but you don't have to read them in any order. Each issue is a self contained story with art very well done by Becky Cloonan. Her art style is different from issue to issue. The basic premise is what if normal people in everyday situations had extraordinary powers. Each issue has different characters and situations. Well worth the process of picking them up. The approach of a "one and done" issue is so novel anymore, since most comics tend to be just long graphic novels that supplement the income of the artistic team until enough issues can be collected into a TPB. Anymore I just wait for the TPB, with these I can read them independantly.

a book I've been reading that I haven't seen much hype about (yet) is Small Gods from Image Comics. Since I suck at describing what a comic's premise is, I'll just post a link to an article that can do a better job than I can. The early issues have already sold out and they're going to a TPB:

Just picked up Conan #9....fantastic.depluto wrote:Check out the new Conan from Dark Horse. I'm not sure if it's ever been written better. Busiek is doing it, and I forgive him for the power of Ninjak stuff now. The art is brutal and works very well.
I have a Qualified NM Magnus #0 from the "It's not my fault it's bent in half" collection.

Artist is Cary Nord, I missed getting his signature a few weeks ago at a local show but I hope he sticks with the book for a long time.

Rex Mundi from Image.
I've pumped up this book here before but it remains one of my favorite reads. Imagine a mystery story with deep political intrigue set in an alternate history of 1920s France. If you have a good understanding of european history since the birth of Christ then you should get a kick out of this one. Discovery (or exposing) of the Holy Grail is one focal points of the book. Story and artwork are second to none, and nevermind its from Image.
Issue #0 can be downloaded from the website:

I still read Ultimate X-Men.
I haven't picked up the latest cuz im lazy and broke, so i dont know much about ultimate sinister. I wish Finch and Bendis haven't left. I've been following the series since the beginning, and am fairly pleased with the twists and turns. I was totally suprised that Beast

died. I mean seriously, Marvel seems to choose a character, and torture them till death. In the original universe it was Colossus(whole family died, etc.), and in Ult Xmen it was Beast(turned blue, storm broke up with him, parents hated him, he was a social reject, he gets crunched by two sets of building parts, etc.).
I also like the super-ripped dugan, and black fury.

Excellent series, just read the first 24 issues myself a month ago. If you like watching TV cop dramas then read this comic. Just like NYPD blue with a hint of Batman running around and a realistic dose of Batman's rogue's gallery.Byrneout wrote:Since several people already beat me to Conan, I recommend Gotham Central. Excellent book from start to finish.
