Anyone reading Bone: One Volume Collection?

Everything else comic-related that's not VALIANT-related.

Anyone reading Bone: One Volume Collection?

Post by WalrusCyclone »

I'd never read Bone before but I love it. This format is awesome, a 1300+ page epic all in the palm of your hands! I've read over half of it and the spine shows no creasing as many were worried about. I guess they're printing it to meet demand up until June 2005, then it'll be no more. I got mine for $27.99 on Amazon which is one of the best values I've ever gotten on any comic. Don't know if it's still available through them, the cover is $39.95, still a good deal when you think that owning all the trades would be well over $100. I know some are waiting for the color versions that will be coming out, but for me it's worth sticking with black and white to get a decade's worth of story for 28 bucks.
For those who haven't read it I'd describe it as Calvin & Hobbes meets Tolkien. The three Bone characters are chased out of their town and into a valley of humans, monsters and dragons. The main one is very kind and brave, one of his cousins is a coniving profiteer which makes for most of the humor and the third is a happy-go-lucky simpleton.
My highest recomendations.

Thanks for the info. I thought they had been sold out. But Amazon had them and mine should been here in a few days.

I've been reading over the past few weeks. I'm up to about page 500, which is book 4 or so. The early books look like Jeff Smith owes a lot to Walt Kelly's Pogo. Smith freely gives credit for influence. The volume is bit unweildy, but still a great value. You would think that this is the largest graphic novel, but I've got the 2000 page Comix 2000 that was published in 2000 by some french publisher that is truly 2000 pages long.

The first printing sold out real quick, in fact, most stores were only sent part of their original order. The second printing came out fairly quickly, however, so it should be readily available now.

So I guess I ordered a 2nd printing. :( It will still be a good read.

I read on one of the comic feeds that Smith is actually going to press again on the book. I guess considering that it's a reprint of a reprint, multiple printings are really a big deal. I'm kind of anxious to see the colorized versions coming out from Scholastic soon.

The originals were black-and-white, and were colorized for the first time in DISNEY ADVENTURES starting in 1994.

I finally got this yesterday. It is a 2nd print but 31.00 shipped was a pretty good deal seeing how it has a 39.95 cover price.

I also ordered a Stray Bullets hard Cover and it kept getting delayed. So I ended up canceling the HC book so they would ship the Bone book. Otherwise it would not be here until Jan. or Feb..

I've been a Bone fan since almost the beginning. I have a complete run, mostly 1st prints on the earlier issues.

I met Jeff Smith about ten years ago at a Diamond seminar. We talked about how Disney wanted to buy Bone, & he drew a great Bone sketch on the cover of his 1st issue under Image (#23).

I still have a whole bundle of the Bone Sourcebook, & the Hero Chistmas Special. I went to a flea market several years ago, & found a German language Bone Hardback. I'll post a pic, if there's an interest.---Steve

jeff smith is a classy dude. i met him at heroescon in charlotte in the early 90's and chatted with him awhile.

he was selling flipbooks which if any of you are familiar with the concept you know how cool this thing was. since his primary training was in animation he made a series of images that when "flipped thru" one ofter the other it made a short animated bone sequence. as far as i know there was only one version made and it involved bone being chased by a rat creature who ultimately bashes into a tree. very funny stuff, and as most of us know the rat creatures deserved it. i just recently sold mine on ebay so you can find them if you're interested.

anyway, the bone collected tpb going to multiple prints doesn't surprise me, the first issue went into at least 5 printings and i beleive the first 4 or 5 went to at least 3 printings. i haven't got one of the full trades yet, i kinda fell off the story after about issue 20...haven't picked one up since then, but i still go back and read the first 6 issue trade and laugh my *SQUEE* off...very good stuff indeed.

I just got my 'One Volume' for my b'day...it is very sweet. Very.

Though...I'm kind of wishing I did buy the 80 buck hardcover they had down at SPX...that thing was just beautiful.

The story line is well developed and interesting with interesting characters. Overall I think Bone is sort of like Lord of the Rings meets Pogo. Probably if you were a fan of either one, Bone would appeal to you. If Black and White comics don' appeal to you, wait for the colorized versions coming in February.

Some of my favorite comics are in black and white. I think today I will pick up a few issues of bone and try them out for myself

I would suggest finding a collection or trying some of the earlier issues, it's not the easist storyline to just jump in the middle of.
