Linking to pictures on this site for auctions

Post by TheVisitor »

Greg -

What is your feeling about individuals who link to images on your site when selling a comic book on eBay ? Let's say Solar 60 for example

They may be selling a copy of that book, but what you are seeing is not what you will be getting.

Since not everyone has a scanner or a digital camera...
It would probably be a good idea to mention that the book
in the auction is not the same book being auctioned.
(Then proceed to describe any differences in condition, etc.)

I'm more concerned that the bidder knows what they're getting...

If the picture comes from this site, it would be nice if
valiantcomics.com was mentioned to give us some free advertising.

Is it possible to mention an external website in an ebay auction? I've heard they'll cancel it if you do since they dont want to give away free ad space.

I would have mentioned the site in my last Rai 3 CGC auction, but I thought they'd yank it.

Hmmmm... good question!

I don't know what eBay thinks about mentioning external websites...
I've seen a few sellers who regularly reference ValiantComics.com
as a source of information on the books that they are selling...
and since ValiantComics.com doesn't "compete" with eBay,
I don't think they have a "business reason" to prohibit it.

They will definitely allow you to mention your own website,
that is, if you are "www.lotsofreallygreatstuffforsalerighthere.com",
they'll let you put that link in your own auctions.

On your "about me" page, they even ask you for your favorite links,
so those are usually going to be external websites.

I guess until I hear or see otherwise, I'd like to see something to the effect
of "information provided by www.ValiantComics.com" if people are using
the scans and other information from the website in their auctions.

I've seen one seller who cuts-and-pastes the information from the
cover gallery right into his auctions...
Print runs, comments, artist info, pricing info, etc., just cut-and-paste...
and unless he started recently, he's never even mentioned ValiantComics.com.

That seems like a clear case of plagiarism...
but I guess I've been "ok with it" so far, since it's still better than putting
"extremely rare" in the title, when we all know the book is common.

Actually, the auction said, "For more information on the comic, please visit Valiantcomics.com". The word ValiantComics was a link. This is all fall out from being "flame of the week" on the CGC market boards. Apparently I have some enemies or someone was just bored enough to dig dirt up on me and watch the drama. I figured no posting is better then fanning the flames. So there you have it :p Me in my entire nakedness.

Ahhh...

I've been answering this topic "in general",
without focusing on any particular seller.
(Except the one who does cut-and-paste.)

ebay is fine w/mentioning other website in your description as long as you aren't mentioning a site selling the item you are auction...as in trying to arrange sells thru ebay w/o paying them their fees...circumnavigating listing fees...

make sense...if not, i won't be offendend..not enough sleep and too much work lately. :(

Yeah I figured as much...those guys really do their homework...it is a good thing when it comes to finding scam auctions and possible press 'n' clean resubs but this is just stupid....also those guys can get REALLY petty overthere...

So, if I outbid more people more often,
we'll eventually have an even larger active community here?
Hmmmm... sounds like a "win-win" for me and for the board. :P

LOL. I used to use BUCKEYEFANATIC.COM as my username until I stopped uptading the site religiously ... but I'm sure I did get lots of traffic that way.

I think the most important thing to remember when using an image that is not actually the item your are buying is to make sure your auction states.

"image is for example only"
"the condition of what you are buying is......."

I could care less where you get the image from. The source might care.
But you better let you bidders know "what you see is not what you get"

Can you clarify why this is stupid ? The book you see in the auction is not the book you will be getting. At the very least, the auction should state that fact.

This is a good point and an oversight by me. I don't recall trying to hide the fact that I used images that were not mine. Indeed, when I was asked I blantely said yes. However, this just goes to show that I need to be more clear when auctioning something online.

Thanks for not contributing to the H8 on these forums :D And for the record, I AM a CGC forum member and I stick by my opinion of the CGC forums, although I would of worded it more carefully had I known it would be used for some mud slinging.

It looks like there actually is a mention in there...
"ValiantComics.com Current Value: $15.00 in Near Mint condition"
Probably a "cut-and-paste" accident...I guess that counts, though.
