What does being "shilled" on ebay mean?
Hey, guys...I was reading the auction hall of shame thread, and some were talking about being "shilled." I hadn't heard that term before...what does it mean?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

It happens every day, all day long, so I would get used to it. Understand that sometimes there's a 'hidden reserve' that is TRULY hidden, in that you're bidding against the seller without knowing it.
In that case, unless you have concrete evidence, I'd just say bid the absolute MOST you're willing to pay, add $1 for chutzpah, and then be done with it. If you win, you win, if you get shilled..well, you still would have paid that much anyways, right?
Shilling IS illegal, by the way.

Dang it! I DID get shilled. But I have evidence of it and have reported it to ebay.
I had already left positive feedback. Be wary of ace_traffic, who will use maggie_got_comics to up the price, since "maggie" won the exact same auction a week before. Evidence: ebay item numbers 2287915450 and 2290261778.
I appreciate you guys letting me know about this practice. It hadn't even occurred to me that this could happen. I guess I'm a little naive.

That seller is a dumb *SQUEE*. He used the same picture and auction description in both. He even left possitive feedback on the shill account. He can't claim now that maggie_got_comics didn't pay. Hell he even used the shill account to bid on the second auction. Good job catching it and reporting it to eBay.Richmond West wrote:Dang it! I DID get shilled. Wow, good catch x-omatic...I wish I had put negative feedback in time, before this guy put other stuff up on ebay. He's doing it again! Once again, "maggie" is winning, and someone is going to get shilled if they bid on this.
Hopefully Valiant fans who would bid on that will see this message first and be careful.

Thanks, Zephyr!
I emailed another guy bidding on the Magnus set, and he had shilled that guy on a Solar set, costing him an extra forty bucks. I think I had bid on that set too, but got outbid (probably on the shill attempt) and didn't want to get into a bidding war.
Yep, the evidence is all over the place. He cost me another forty bucks or so on the X-O set. I asked that guy on the Solar set to report him, too.

Another One
I just noticed this. I sold a CD to a guy last week and he's been hounding me for feedback (I only return feedback and usually only get around to it every two weeks or so) - I've gotten e-mails from him in the last week demanding feedback. So, of couse I think something is up. I checked his feedback and noticed 20 feedbacks from the same seller account. So I check out the seller account and noticed that he sells mostly (probably) knock-off polo shirts and name brand wallets. and I think to myself , what idiot needs 40 of the same shirts? So I check out for the for sale items and noticed that the descriptions look similar too, plus the shill account has bid on ALMOST EVERY AUCTION that this guy has done (plus a few others). I'm thinking this guy knows he's got to do some other buying to through off suspicion and must have just realized that having 20+ feedback from one account doesn't do anything for his total number. I suppose it could be legit, but I'm guessing it's not. Hell, his shill account leaves feedback the day after he closes the auction! Does he live next door? In any event, I'm not leaving this guy any feedback (he's already left me a positive) just cause I'd like to see him waste his time extorting it from me (and all I have to do is hit "delete"). I've reported it to ebay (if they do anything at all)
Here's the two accounts - NWTstuff and PatrickNJN - Maybe I'm just paranoid - what do you think?

i think that you're right hackman...and i think that it is great what you guys are doing to keep people on their toes at least...e-bay is a pretty cool thing-but i figure that eventually it will be forced to drastically change (when the gov't gets sick and tired of "losing out" on all that money that's exchanging hands...) anyway-until it does i want it to be as safe as can be!
