Graded Valiant values?

Post by TheGreatSatan »

Does anyone know of a rough guide for the value of Valiant books that are professionally graded?

I have:

Magnus #1 CGC 9.6
Ninjak #1 PGX 9.9
Rai #0 CGC 9.8
Shadowman #0 PGX 9.9
Turok #1 CGC 9.6 SS
Unity #1 Platinum PGX 9.9
X-O Manowar #15 Pink PGX 9.8
Solar: MotA #1 CGC 9.8
Shadowman #1 CGC 9.8

Just curious... :?

These are my guestimates based on what I think the market is doing and the fact that you have some PGX stuff there. Oh and they are prices to sell, go higher but you may be holding onto them for longer.

Magnus #1 CGC 9.6 $40
Ninjak #1 PGX 9.9 $45
Rai #0 CGC 9.8 $30
Shadowman #0 PGX 9.9 $45
Turok #1 CGC 9.6 SS $50 depending how many signatures.
Unity #1 Platinum PGX 9.9 $75
X-O Manowar #15 Pink PGX 9.8 $30
Solar: MotA #1 CGC 9.8 $85
Shadowman #1 CGC 9.8 $50

Just my opinion.

I don't see a difference in grading between CGC and PGX. I think it's all just in everyone's head, probably because CGC was first.

I thought I read here that PGX is like some dude in a garage. But what do I know. :?

That's correct.

Notice how all the 9.9 books are from PGX...

Now, ask yourself, why would someone who owned unslabbed 9.9 condition books
send them to PGX when everyone knows CGC 9.9 books sell for more money?

Answer... because they KNOW there's no way CGC would call them 9.9.

Food for thought. :thumb:

PGX is literally "some guy"... just like you, me, or any other dork.
He bought some plastic holders and likes to slab comics in his garage.

Now, it's entirely possible that you, me, or any other dork could ACCURATELY
grade comic books and put them in plastic slabs.
None of us would be "wrong" for doing that.

However, we wouldn't be "professional graders" who have anyone
double-checking our work, or triple-checking (as CGC does).
We wouldn't have a history in the industry and a basis for people to trust us.
We wouldn't have major national dealers preferring our slabs.
We wouldn't have ANY major auction houses handling our slabs.
We'd literally just be a guy in a garage with some plastic.

PGX does not have major dealer or auction house support.
Even when they slab an important book, like X-Men #1 (1963),
those books don't end up in "serious hands"... they're like novelties.
If the dealers who rely on comic books for a living, for their reputation,
and for the success of their companies don't like PGX...
that's a pretty bold statement. They'd rather sell a book unslabbed
than sell a book in a PGX holder.

Even if it's PGX and it's graded ACCURATELY,
it's not interesting to major dealers and auction houses.

There's no reason to believe that all PGX books are misgraded.
I'm sure the majority of them are graded just fine...
but the industry doesn't accept the company.
Just a few collectors here or there are "buying it".

If you have a nice book, it's likely it could be called a PGX 9.9.
(About 10 times more likely than CGC calling that book a 9.9).

But, what is that PGX 9.9 book... really? In reality, it's a nice book, overgraded,
in a slab that some guy in his garage decided should be 9.9 to make
the submitter happy. (In the hopes that he'll get repeat customers.)

A really nice Ninjak #1... is really just a Ninjak #1.
Value? I don't know... a great copy? Hmmm... about $2.

A slabbed Ninjak #1 PGX 9.9? Maybe $5? How much is plastic worth anyway?
