Here is the piece I did for the Valiant Zombie project. Your comments are welcome. And yes it is a homage to Magnus 0.

It's neat to see the progression you make from the first rough drawing to the final one. Shows how much work is involved in just one pic. Great job, Chris.

Very cool Chris. A great homage to the classic MRF 0.
Shadowman is not out of his element taking on a horde of Zombies.
For some reason I get a Ditko like vibe from this too.
Good work man!

I like the t-shirts on the zombies in the background. Yet another nod to MRF. I really like this.

Since I assume you want honest feedback... here goes...

I really like it as well... the subtle choices... a pitchfork in the background,
Shadowman holding the zombie's jaw... very nice!

When I first saw it, I thought the Shadowman mask was a little too close to the face,
like Jack's face was more "flat" than it should be... I'm not sure what causes that
because the face is very similar in size/shape to the Magnus #0 cover,
but there's something about that mask that make the face look "flat".
It may just be that I can't picture a full-sized nose behind the mask. :hm:

Jack's back foot looks a little strange... the shoe seems a little too small and reminds
me of the shoes you'd put on a child when you dress them up for pictures.
(Hush Puppies?)

Ok, back to the favorite parts... everything "on the ground" looks great...
the zombies strewn around... the "texture" of the dirt... the detail in the front zombie...
just a really great job.

If there's anything that I'm sure an artist loves most, it's critique from someone who can't draw.
...and that's definitely me. :thumb:

Thanks greg. I understand what you mean with the face. It may be because of teh way I shaded it. I did try to match the image of Magnus though and his face is a little flat on the Magnus zero. I was not 100% satisfied with it myself, but then again I never am.

With regards to the lace up boots, I was going for a little bit of an old school look to them. I havenever really like the plain slip on type boots that everyone seems to draw these days. I agree with the size of the rear foot. I made a decision not to make it larger, or more realistically proportioned to keep it in line with the perspective created in Magnus 0. The feet in Magnus 0 are also quite different in size.

Thanks for the feedback. :thumb:

I really like this pic! I actually didnt realize it was a homage until you brought it up.. then I thought 'Duh!! of course it is!" :thumb:
The mask and the foot stick out to me as well. Im not an artist, so take this with a grain of salt.

Even though the boot looks odd, I think it matches the Magnus. The laces thing gets me too, like its distracting, drawing too much attention to the shoes... :hm:

With the mask, Im thinking that it looks like its on his head crooked. You can see the jaw and it looks like the jaw is turned more to the right than the mask is. Maybe its the eyes, maybe they dont look like they are looking directly where the contact is between his hand and the zombie...

Just some idea. The rest is pure magic :thumb:

:hm: Looking at the Mags 0 cover, the way you did the shoes makes sense. The original mask is just harder to draw, IMO. (It always winds up looking awkward when I draw it.) Jack's head and neck seem a bit shifted to the left.

The Zombies are perfect. Love the line-work and texture (esp. the sweater on the zom in the foreground. The T-shirts are a cool touch too.

The more I look at Magnus on the original, the more "off" he's looking to me now . . . :!:

The only thing I think is off is the mask of shadows, other than that the image is frakking awesome.

I am glad you all seem to like the Zombies. I actually went to the Body Worlds 3 exhibit here in AZ and did some sketches to get a better understanding of muscle structure.

I can't wait to see what you're going to do for Valiant Zombies 2...

Maybe a homage to the cover of X-O 2 :hope:
