I can only speak for myself, but i post here a fair amount, and i've only been to newsarama maybe three times. and that's only after someone here posted a link to something valiant related over there. So to me they don't really matter at all. But this site matters greatly. I'm sure i'm not alone here. So from that perspective the 3 % doesn't really mean anything to me.

I'd like to think we would be, but not in a million years. Seriously.

At least we're not the table where those creepy, smelly kids played Magic the Gathering.

Ive been a lurker here for a LONG DAMN time. I have posted almost never, and made one trade with someone for some sweet Solar books I needed to finish my pre-unity run. I met one member at Wonder Con this year, Greg you do a great job because he promoted this site immediately to me when I was rifeling through his bins for Valiants. I was already a member, but its great to think that this community exists on and offline. Way to go guys.

Now on newsarama, I post rather frequently, although I am still more of a lurker. I love 'rama. I love the talk@ forums and threads. I hate the treatment of Valiant, and Valiant fans in general over there. The un provoked attacks of myself and other VF members was extremely disheartening to me. I wont outright leave the 'rama, but I sure as hell am not pleased with the way this is being handled over there. I can only hope cooler heads prevail, and some thing changes, but probably wont, so I will just lurk more over there and post less. They are really negative over there anyway...

^ I mostly lurk on both sites, but I'm fairly new to Newsarama. I'm slowly getting back into buying modern comics, and I haven't found too many sites that do better posting breaking comics news.
The frequent misuse of "it's" in most of the columns drives me nutty, and the interviews with creators and industry insiders tend to be a little too casual and buddy-buddy for my liking, but I can live with that.

When I read about VEI vs. VIP there though, I get really upset. I assume most people posting are adults, but the forum is moderated like a kiddie pool, the moderator biased ("Can we let this point go now?" "But you just brought it up again in your own article..."), and the general attitude towards Valiant means I'll remain a lurker there. Also, I've stopped clicking on their banners when I order through one of their affiliates and just go type in the store's URL manually, not that that makes a huge difference.

If I'm reading what you're saying right, it's like Valiant already has a rabid fan base of almost 4 percent (beating out Image?) and they aren't even out yet (again). Just think of how the numbers jumped when the relaunch was announced and think again how much more numbers will jump when there is an actual FULL relaunch. I think Valiant as a company has a shot at being a real contender in the market, and this site will have years of followers to push it to the front of the "fan site" line.
Thats the point that i would make here.

The activity here is amazing when you consider the output of new Valiant material.

Newsarama is where I go to get comics news. I don't post there, but occasionally I am led to a discussion there (like the recent Rags Morales vs Rob Liefield clash) and thats becauase Lying in the Gutters had a link to it.

Boottom line for me on this question is that the definiton of Valiant fan will change should new material begin coming out regularly.

For a long time we've been able to envision a new Valiant to be whatever we wanted it to be.

With the release of new material we have more to work with. But the more new material that is released, the more divergence there will be as to whether those developments are "on-track" or "off-track."

Not to mention that a successful Valiant relaunch would include a whole new generation of valiant fans who will bring in a completely new dynamic.

So the question might be which valiant fans are going to be more important. Those who have been here for years waiting for a return, or the brand new readership.

You're right that 3% isn't much. However, lets think about Demographics.

I remember a thread not too long ago polling tha age of VF.com members; as I recall I was one of the young-pups at 27.
Also, for the VF.com size, I bet we spend one helluva large chunk of American Pesos on funny books every month. Either current titles or backissues. Most of us have jobs.
Are we still a voice to be heard? - Absolutely.

I don't have an answer to this, but do you think that Valiant would be returning if this fan-base of customers didn't exist?
I think of newsarama.com as quantity; while we here at VF.com are quality - plain and simple.
Without a doubt thePike writes true. Older people have more money to spend and that cannot be ignored when selecting a target audience to hawk your wares at. I think any possibility of bringing Valiant back would be non-existent if it wasn't for this site.

This is responsible for renewed interest.

If VALIANT fans didn't matter, VIP wouldn't have Valiant in its name. Or be trying to secure trademarks.

It's a total back-handed compliment, but I think that is about the biggest validation we could ever get.

Let's compare 1,348 to 36,840.
ValiantFans.com is 3.66% of the current
Newsarama.com membership counts.

What does 3.66% in the comic industry mean? Is it important at all?

As of July 2007, a 3.66% unit share for publishers would be 4th behind Marvel, DC, and Dark Horse.
A 3.66% dollar share for publishers would be 5th behind Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, and Image.

Something to ponder...
Not all Valiant fans are represented as members here nor are all comic fans registered on Newsarama (I know I'm not, I've never even thought about it) so it's hard to tell just how big a following anything has by those numbers.

Another thing that muddies it up is the difference between being a member and "an active member." I have quite a few websites I'm a member of but haven't posted on or logged on in years. Hell, I have quite a few I've become a member of with little or interest in the site itself.

I've always been curious, what's the number of members on here that actually currently post?

Well, of course not. I seriously doubt the majority of any fan base post on internet boards or are even registered members there.

But active members who either post or atleast look at the board is something I've always been curious about. In another thread Greg said that 298 people logged in atleast once in August (and I'm sure only a fraction of them posted) so clearly we don't have over 1,300 individual people participating on here at once. I'm sure it's like any board with a good portion of the registered members having lost interest and moved on. I know there's tons of places I'm still registered that I haven't posted at in years myself.

This web site rekindled my interest as a collector of Valiant comics. I went several years without buying any, but a few years ago decided to finish up my runs since I assumed they would still be cheap.

Googling here and there looking for a checklist brought me here. I lurked for several months, and then started posting. Even now, I'm still buying Valiants ... eight in the last month.

But I'm not so much a "fan of Valiant" as I am a "fan of collecting old Valiants." Sure, I'll get anything VEI puts out, and I can't wait to read new stories. But my primary purposes here are to learn the art of collecting these things, and to socialize in a weird but fulfilling way. I've always assumed geeks like me are in the majority here.

yeah, same here, I'd been picking up $1 Commons here and there, but had pretty much ran out of places to turn when I found Valiantfans.com. And this site is what kept my collection growing, since I've joined my collection has gone from 100-ish to just over 500 Valiant comics.
