Unpublished X-O MANOWAR #1 Cover

Bob Layton has updated his website for December, & has added an unpublished cover to X-O #1 to his Art Gallery. Here is his interesting story behind the cover, & the Conan pic:

"There's a really interesting story behind the origin of this rejected cover.

Before Marketing Wizard Jon Hartz came up with the name of "X-O", Jim had rejected this cover of the unnamed armored character for being "way too Marvel looking". I wasn't aware that his intent was to artistically go 180 degrees in the other direction from the stuff we did at Marvel.

On the back of the page is a doodle of Conan that I did one day when I was talking on the phone. It was that doodle that eventually gave the three of us the idea to change the concept from a modern-day abductee to a Goth warrior from 800 A.D..."

I'm glad he's posting something Valiant related every month when he does a new update. It's listed as sold in his gallery. Any idea who got it?

Unfortunately, not me. I don't know who the lucky dog is on this one!

I did manage to snag three early Solar pieces, the Shadow King model sheet, & an unpublished cover to Dr. Tomorrow #12. But always looking for more...Bob still has one my Solar pieces on his Art Gallery. :) ---Steve

The armor in this pic seems to have more traces of Iron Man in it than the real cover (or maybe that's just me). It's still a nice piece of art though.

You know.... this may be in response to the "Who created X-O" thread here. Hmmmmmm.

Most amazing piece of art I have ever seen by Bob Layton. I hope Layton got the price the piece deserved. I'd like to meet the owner and make him an offer he couldn't refuse.
Bob Layton's site is becoming one of my favs too.

*SQUEE*, the man can doodle! That looks nothing like my telephone doodles. In fact, mine look like doo-doo.

I sent him an e-mail asking to quote a price. I did'nt realize it had been sold already. If it's comparable to his other art, I would guess the sales price to be between $300.00 to $550.00

Yup thats what I would guess too but I think it would go higher in the free market. Its nice to see the who created XO argument cleared up. Looks like Bob Layton did have as major an influence as he claims in the tpb.

Maybe it's just me...

But does the shadow behind Aric remind anyone else of something from the Marvel U?

Hey, you're right!

I was thinking Titanium Man, but Kang fits better.
