Kitty Pryde.
She was the one who really turned the X-Men into a sort of family. In my opinion, the major issue that completely transformed the X-Men into the best comic book team of all time happened in Uncanny #153. The All New, All Different X-Men began as a loose association of strangers. It was really Jean Grey's death that began to bind them together. Even then, they were still drifting in different directions, particularly in how they mourned and coped. It was the presence of young Kitty that brought a real center and sense of community to the team. In a sense, she became the entire team's child. The responsibility of having to raise her together bound them into something much stronger than a superhero team. Years later, and long after Kitty grew and left, the team retained that center because it was now a family.

Wolverine in his early days was easily my favorite X-Men character. He was a cold blooded killer in comics before that type of thing was the norm. I can't say I'm a big fan of the character now, he's way too overexposed and too much of the mystery of the character has been destroyed. Well, at least I'll always be able to go back and re-read the old stories!

OK lately Deadpool has been growing on me, depends if the character gets a good writer or not. Believe it or not the Cable & Deadpool series has been getting better as it has been coming out. Get issue #9 just to see Deadpool running around in a vintage Marvel Girl costume. I rarely laugh out loud reading a comic, but that did it for me.
