Anyone else notice all the pre-unity valiants on the mile high comics site AND the prices? Ol'Chuck must have bought collection or 2 of valiants

Yeah, pbbt. Good luck with those prices Chuck.

I don't understand the mentality of selling a book x2 the current selling price. Can anyone explain to me the reasoning behind overpricing your inventory and then sitting on top a wherehouse of unsold books? Does the thought, "I can sell one book for $10 or 12 books for $5", ever cross his mind? It baffles my small little capitalist brain.

I think that he prices his books very differently than everyone else in the free world. His prices are based on how many he has. The less he has the more it cost.

If he runs a couple for sales at the same time I might have to pick up a few of these to fill some gaps. They would not be bad @ 30% off of 50% off..ya know?

That's the sad thing, those ARE the sale prices! His pricing plan seems to be make the regular price 5 times guide and them cut that price in half and hype that you're having a 1/2 off sale.

Prices aside, I can really say that I'll not buy from Chuck again.

There have been too many times that I've placed an order for items, only to have them be unavailable at the time the order is pulled. It seems to take DAYS for them to really pick the books out of the bins, which is just unacceptable to me.

Additionally, I don't really trust his grading. I've received a few books, graded at Near Mint that I would hesitate to even call Very Fine. Often time he doesn't catch spine stress or dinged corners.

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

This has happened to me several times too and I feel the same way. It's not good business.

I order from Mile High Comics all the time and am extemely satisfied. I have bought some really nice, brand new, hardcovers at half-price, and I have found my share of great bargains on back issues too.

I've dealt with Mile High since I started collecting, which was quite a few years ago. At the time, I never realized the prices were high, but I was getting books I couldn't get anywhere else (the internet didn't exist yet).

Recently, I've picked up some GREAT deals from them (during sales, of course), including a Fantastic Four #1 that they called "Good" but is at least VG if not FN!!!! It's a beautiful book and I got it for WAY less than I ever could have on eBay.

Their grading is beyond reproach, I've never been disappointed. In fact, I'm usually surprised, as the books are typically better than advertised. All in all, if you watch for sales, you can come out ahead!

For what it's worth.....

I agree. I don't like their prices, but their grading is very tight and usually undergraded.

YEEEOOOOWWWWCH! :o

As a rule, I can order fine comics from them and end up with very fine or better, whether they sold out of the lower grade or I'm actually missing something, I don't know. I use Overstreet as my grading guide, and in my sales on eBay, I've always had the buyer come back saying the book was undergraded or better than expected. I tend to be really tough, especially when selling, but I also try to be fair.

Just curious, where does "the word on the street" come from? Like I say, I've never had anything but good experience with them! :D

Best,
Doug

Well in this very thread someone complains about his grading. Just seems that and the pricing are the big knocks on MH :thumb:

MileHigh has overgraded comics since Day 1, on the philosophy that '90% of the people either won't know or won't care, and won't bother to return it.'

He's right.

CHUCK HIMSELF admits that he 'doesn't use Overstreet, but his own grading philosophy' and that 'grading isn't all that important to him' and that strict graders are bad for business.

Well, duh, they're bad for HIS business, because he wants to sell overgraded books for high prices.

He admits all of this on his weblogs, by the way.

Now...if you have gotten books that are UNDERgraded from them...more power to you...either you got very lucky, or you don't know how to grade. That's not an offensive remark, there are a lot of people who don't know how to grade...there's nothing wrong with that, unless you're planning to SELL.

But yes, Mile High has shipped out books graded 'NM' that were F/VF at best, they've shipped the wrong books, and made people send BACK quarter books to get the CORRECT one(s), etc.

Not that they're bad...their customer service is very good, and very customer oriented. Chuck, with all his flaws, is a DECENT man, and tries to do the right thing by himself and his customers.

That's pretty damn important, to me.

But Mile High's overgrading is so common and so widespread that it's been an industry joke for two decades now.

Just so you're aware. ;)

I stopped buying ungraded books from Mile High after my last NM/M book, FF #55 (wicked Silver Surfer vs. Thing cover) graded out at 8.0. I was okay with 9.0 or 9.2 for their NM/M books, but getting a few 8.0s in my last big order sealed it for me.

That being said, they do have some nice slabbed books on sale from time to time. I just snagged a few Neal Adams DCs in 9.0 for $25 - $40 apiece, plus a 9.4 Conan #10 for $125. Looking at the time and cost involved in sending comics to CGC I am going to just wait for some of Chuck's sales and load up on more slabbed books in the future.

Cheers,
Skiw

Sending you an 8.0 when claiming it's NM is so unexcusable! I hope you returned the book and recieved a full refund. :x :sumo:

I agree that Mile High has made some mistakes with my orders, but they really are the complete website to deal with when looking for comics. Add onto that the sales they have, along with the discount for newslwtter subscribers, and you can get some cheap comics. For example, the back issues are at 50% off, and I have a special codeword for an additional 20% off. With that kind of discount, Chuck's prices aren't so high. :thumb:

My first MHC order was my last. I'm not calling it bait and switch but it sure seemed that way.

Email them and they've got 4 NM copies of "X" and when the order is pulled you get an email saying they've got 1 copy so you go for the one copy and it's not NM like they said so you waste a week sending the book back. Total 100% waste of time. As much of a nightmare as ebay can be I'll take it ANY DAY over MHC!
