I don't know, to me, that seems just about right to me when you break it down:

For good or bad, modern comics retail for approx. $2.99 an issue, which is what -- 24 pages of story, the rest being ads. With issue #100 you're getting a comparable amount of content to two single issues, including an essay on the history of Nexus, the higher production values, an example of which is an 8-page painted feature surrounding Sundra, and if memory serves it comes with a commemorative print and a birth certificate, bagged.

I don't know that every issue will feature the cover price, or the extras, but considering the characters, the creative team, the production values, etc. I've gotta say that seems fairly reasonable to me.

considering i'm about 5 issues away from a first/capital/etc. run i'm VERY excited to see the dude back in action.

those books are hard to find for folks like me looking to read them and not "retire" due to speculating on their future.

try completing a run of scout by tim truman sometime...lol

anyway, i'm digging that nexus is coming back even though the last few dark horse mini's were a bit disappointing.

$4 is the industry standard for 48 pages, any more and more you're getting gouged like Marvel did with The Initative (which was a really bad special anyway). The main story in Nexus 100, which would be the only reason I'd buy it, is only 22 pages so just on principal I'm not paying $6 bucks for that. Mike Allred pulled this same trick a few years back and, unfortunately, I didn't know any better and ended paying the $6-$7 bucks only to find I only got one normal issues worth of story and some crappy back ups. Dark Horse is trying a similar deal charging $3.50 for an upcoming Martha Washington short story. I just get tired of getting jerked around by people who only come out with comics once every few years.

I'll definately look into getting the trade of the new Nexus whenever it comes out though. Nexus is, more often than not, a good comic.

Hell yes, very excited for the return of Nexus. My collection is spotty but I have the first 2 Dark Horse trades from way back and an assortment of the mini series and others. Huge fan of Steve Rude's artwork though and both he and Baron seem to do their best work with Nexus.

It sounds like it'd be a grim book and sometimes it is, but Nexus is a surprisingly normal guy in his downtime and the book tends to mix hard edged stuff, with whismical science fiction and wacky humor. More often than not, it works. And Steve Rudes' art is to die for.

Since it's been a bazillion years since "last issue" I got a feeling they'll try to keep the new storyline that's starting up now a good place to jump on. If you ever see Nexus: Origin in a back issue box that's a real good place to start too.

Nexus #1 through 80 was published at first by Capital Comics(volume 1) then by First Comics(volume 2), issue 80 being the last issue of the series at First.

The publication rights are then picked up by Darkhorse. Darkhorse turned the format into limited series even though the main storyline is continued from issue 80. Here’s where the numbering gets us to #99:

Nexus: The Origin (#1) (is series number 81)
Nexus: Alien Justice (#1-3) (is series number 82-84)
Nexus: Wages Of Sin (#1-4) (is series number 85-88)
Nexus: Executioner’s Song (#1-4) (89-92)
Nexus: God Con (#1-2) (93-94)
Nexus: Nightmare In Blue (#1-4) (95-98)


I think the only issue I am missing is the capital issue that had the record with it...#3...I should go check...they are very good reads

Hey Texcap. I've never read a regular Nexus book (not counting the Nexus/Magnus mini). What's the series about? And how many issues have been published?

myron covered the breakdown very well, so the only thing I'd add is that issue #99 is on its way, and issue #100 is currently being solicited -- both are being geared in such a way so that the new reader can jump on with a good idea of the general concept, some Nexus history, etc. They're also picking up on the events they left us at some 10-years ago, so I'm glad to see them trying to balance the old fans, and the potential reader both.

As for the story, the main protagonist is Horatio Hellpop, an extremely powerful cosmic avenger who has the unique ability of seeing mass murderers in his dreams and is then physically and mentally compelled (by a god-like being named the Merk) to track them down and execute them for their crimes. Should he choose not to listen, he'd suffer terribly, and potentially die. Or as he puts it, 'he fights...in self defense.' As someone mentioned, the premise sounds a little dark -- and at times it certainly is -- but it's a very intelligent book as well, it's funny, there are crazy creatures everywhere, zany cultural references and influences (Spaaaaaace Ghoooooost) aplenty, and Steve Rude's art is worth the price of admission alone. Everything from the character's uniform, the lightning bolt, to Judah, Sundra, Ylum and in-between just screams "cool" (and it is)!

I've no doubt you'd enjoy it LS, particularly as a Valiant fan, having enjoyed Mike Baron's Badger, and having sampled the spirit of the comic in the Magnus/Nexus crossover. A very cheap, and worthwhile, way to get an idea about the series would be to track down the Nexus: Origin issue (a beautiful comic), and to pick up issue #99 when it's released soon. If those don't catch your eye, then the series may not be for you. I'd be very surprised if that were the case, however.

Honestly, I don't know that I can narrow it down too much, as it's real easy to say: "the whole thing!" But here are some of the highlights if it helps:

- Nexus: The Origin (Nexus #81, Dark Horse) - A re-telling (not re-tooling) of the original origin found in Nexus #1-3. It's a "must have" to see how Nexus was born, what drives him, etc. It's double-sized, self-contained, features one of my favorite Nexus covers, and is a sight to behold in general.

- Nexus #1-3 (Capital Comics) - Likely the next place you'd want to visit. It's the origin story, as well, and while not nearly as polished it's a neat look back at how it all started, it's still a a great read and it provides additional insight into Sundra, Dave, Ylum, and Nexus himself. It also has more of the background story that you see glimpses of in the Origin issue. If you can track one down, issue #3 features a flexi-disc with an audio version of the issue.

- Nexus #1-20 (First Comics) - Just essential Nexus reading, as the cast, crew and storyline really are set up here -- a couple of additional highlights, in your case, might be the Badger "team-up" in issues #6-7.

- Next Nexus #1-4 (First Comics) - Nexus' headache facing down the Loomis sisters...

You also can't miss any of the Dark Horse series' that both Mike Baron & Steve Rude worked on. They reach an entirely different level of polish in terms of both the art and the storytelling in my mind and are also "must haves" in my book:

- Nexus: Alien Justice #1-3
- Nexus: Wages of Sin #1-4
- Nexus: Executioner's Song #1-4
- Nexus: God Con #1-2 &
- Nexus Meets Madman...of course.

If you enjoy these, then you've got an awful lot of great reading ahead of you beyond this!

I picked up 99. I have read maybe 5 Nexus issues, but have always had a back-burner interest in the character (much like Cerebus - just haven't got around to reading many of their books).

I am not sure if I will be inclined to drop $6 on #100. Any word on a page count?
