I'm familiar with how color seperation and CMYK printing works (I've hand crafted and printed images in this way), I was just confused about how those grey-green pages fit into either the creation of the color plates or the final print. I'd never seen anything like that.

It's one of the layers. But this set of plates is inverted. Jedi's post give a good help for comparing which color is not on this plate. Yellow?

I did a little poking around last night. I pulled the cover image for solar 15 and seperated it into CMYK elements. The third image in the initial post is a print of the cyan color information. When I seperated the image into the seperate channels, the cyan channel looks exactly like this (except black and white when seperated, not gray and yellow)

What is strange to me though is that it is neither printed in cyan nor in black from which to make a photocell to shoot the image onto a plate. It is green-gray on yellow paper. It is also trimmed and might be stapled with other sheets to make a comic book-like assembly. I still don't see what the use of this is.

The only thing that makes sense is that it is some sort of proof print to do a very rough check.

I will put up a few more pics tonight. I decided to put one of the items up on Ebay this weekend. It will be one that I have not posted pics of yet.

Yeah, the ones I've seen have been black.

This is the cell that I am going to be selling on Ebay. The first pic is of the cell by itself. The second and third pics show what the cell looks like with color in the background. My camera is not very good, unfortunately. Hopefully, you can tell what it looks like.

On the top of the cell is printed

Would anyone happen to have an X-O #45 page 1 scan or know how to get one? Unfortunately, I don't have this comic (yet).
