Yeah, I thought so as well :thumb:

Honestly, the only reason why I buy 60's and 70's horror or war comics are for what I think are some of the best covers you can find ever in comics. Kubert war comics covers are just awesomem and I love anything by Cardy, Adams, Wrightson, Toth, Kaluta, and Heath. Aparo a tends to be more uneven to me , but his best work is up there as well.
I see you haven't gotten into late 50's war yet....

Or you wouldn't forget to mention Jerry Grandenetti.... :thumb:
Cool...what did he draw?
Lots of late 60's war, but his best work, bar none, are his grey tone covers on GI Combat #75-100ish.
Never heard of him before. I'll have to go and check it out :thumb:

I don't target books I can't - or in my case, more aptly refuse - to afford in High Grade :D Which basically eliminates Golden Age from my equation. The only exceptions are a handful of Marvel Myserys/Tales I own. Other than that I don't really own a book that grades below an 8.0 (which I have one of). I'd say 99.9% of what I own is 9.2+ with about 90% of those being 9.4+. I'm very good about tossing non-HG books.

My definition of HG is 9.4+ - or a 9.2 (if pre-1980) with superior centering and presentation.

I really can't stand beat up books. :!:
The further back you go, the more impossible you will find it becoming to find ANYTHING in grades higher than 6.0 or 7.0. And I mean ANYTHING.

Oh, sure, there are plenty of 9.4 copies of FF #1 out there....

But how many 9.4 copies of GI Combat #82 even exist?

Any?

People did not save late 50's books, period, and even less so in high grade.

Besides....not to try to convince you or anything, because keeping yet another competitor out of the race is in my best interests (damn you Hobo!!! <shakes fist>)....there are a lot of books that look very decent in 6.0, especially from the late 50's.

I respect uber high grade books....I refuse to collect a book post 1978 in "less than 9.4 shape", and I have, at least, a 9.6 or better copy of every single "modern" book I own.

But they're not hard to find (and on eBay, every auction is Near Mint....just ask 'em!)
I will probably amend that rule as I will be looking to start my Phantom Stranger Golden Age run this year.
I'm pretty certain you're not going to find a copy of any of these six books in any conditions above about F/VF.

Did you know that Showcase #80 is his first appearance in 16 years?

His last work was round about Showcase #82. Good stuff.

Yea, his first Silver Age appearance, I have a couple of 9.0 copies and I have been trying for the last couple of months to land a 9.4

Well, an Ebay Near Mint goes in my trash - I have none of those that aren't current readers that aren't cycled for the trash.

I'm aware that the HG means different different things in different decades (not to mention different people) and that a 7.5 can represent an outstanding copy (Action Comics#1 comes to mind), I just find myself not pleased, even if would I have the highest graded copy of a particular books that is in what I'd call shabby condition (regardless of age/scacity). It doesn't lack a wow factor for me (especially some of the Pre-Code Horror), I just know I don't want to own it. I know it will eventually eat at me and I will invent a reason to toss it. This is a good thing in a way as it creates a much needed restriction on my collecting habit.

It won't be a short process, but I know the highest I can hope for are 7.5-8.0 (most of them are Pedigrees).
There has got to be a way you can give me these comics you toss out...its a big world..every problem has a solution...I know there's a way..come on dude...let's think about this..

As mentioned in another thread earlier big thanks to Rico for a slabbed Magnus#64. I always dug this cover and I picked up a slabbed Unity Red.

I also picked up a couple of raws in one of my current real focuses - Teen Titans #1-#40 - in issues#37 and #40. Some nice covers (not actual comic):

Is that a cryptic way of asking me how many comics I have? :?
No, I just always picture comics in units of boxes...thats how I visualise 'em...so how many? I can't believe I haven't asked you this before!

Jay Tomio wrote:No idea really - but not much.

In the states I have my childhood collection in a a collectible room that probably has 15-18 long boxes and a couple of shortboxes on focuses I'm still working on. The problem is the bulk of that (at least a dozen of those boxes) was from the Dark Age of comics - and although due to my psychotic distaste for raw imperfections and my tendency to throw books away, they are all really in supreme condition - that most of which doesn't really have anything more than personal value. The rest of the boxes are full of comics I ship back perodically to the states for permanent storage in the room and are represented by my current purchases (I just got back into comics last year) - which is really mostly Bronze/Silver DC.

Here with me I have 3 CGC boxes full with a few extra slabbs I don't have room for in a ghetto box and just 2 short boxes of raws I haven't shipped back yet that are going in the permanent collection (mostly Bronze/Silver DC) and a couple of long boxes of current moderns I read or am about to read that I bought in the last 3-4 months that were still in acceptable grades and didn't get tossed.

So I really don't have comics in the amount some others do - I'm too poor
OK its not as extensive as I thought. So you are really in your early stages of developing a kick *SQUEE* Silver age collection...

I wouldn't say I have anything that grand in mind. I just chip at my hobby-focuses when I can, try to finish them and move on. I buy a lot of random books, I don't really hunt for keys (because frankly I can't afford Showcase#4 in a grade I'd want), luckily most of my focuses don't feature a lot of extravagant books (some certainly, but not a lot). The only run that I got trapped in is Batman/Detective because the Adams titles have really jumped in price over the last couple of years. Try to find a Batman#227 in HG for around OSPG - it's damn near impossible.

One thing that has recently helped is that I used to but like 130-200 new books a year from Amazon but in the last two years I save all that money because publishers send me the same books for free now, and I dump that into comics which basscialy comes out 2k-4k a year more.

I'm really in tune to having the collection I want, not so much motivated by what's hot or desirable to others. Right now I'm into HG Silver and Bronze DC with great centering (a problem with many Bronze DC Titles) especially with runs I focus on.
I was pretty close to taking a Detective #400 in 9 point something...around 4-500 bucks...just a really cool book to me and one of my favourite Batman issues in collecting terms...passed on it though.

The laughing fish issues in high grade can't be more than $150 though right?

9.4 preferable, would consider a 9.2 with strong eye appeal and no wrap issues. :thumb:

Not a comic...but picked up a Spider-man Camera today (from 1978). For a buck, why not? (Antique shops are great for oddball comic items)

The back cover and lens cap are missing, but the mechanism works & the shutter fires open when I take practice shots. I'm tempted to hunt down a back cover and try it out with film.... :hm:

Something I'm very proud of...

Rawhide Kid #19.

I paid about $25 for it, and it's a Good+ ish, but it's the ONLY one I have EVER seen in almost five years of searching on eBay.

Now I only need #17 and #20 to have a complete Kirby Rawhide Kid set.

Man, was THAT a tough set to put together!

It was from the guy on the CGC boards who's selling the Jack Kirby stuff (for WAYYYY too high prices.)

Thanks to Hobo for the head's up.
