Regrets?

What would you say is the comic book that you have purchased (either directly at the newstand, via auction, whatever) that you regret purchasing? Either because the story sucked so much you just wanted your $1.50 (or whatever) back, or you bought into hype, or you paid to much in an auction, etc?

The biggest one I can think of for me is the Robin II series. I had just started collecting, and I bought into the hype of buying all the hologram covers. Sheesh.

And what about the other end? A comic you had the opportunity to buy, but didn't. Is there one (or a few) that come to mind that you regret not buying? And when I say opportunity to buy, I don't simply mean one that you COULD have bought if only you knew (I think we ALL could have bought Harbinger #1). I am talking about one that you either had in your hands and put back, or were offered and you rejected it.

My biggest regret (right now) is not getting Magnus 0 VcVSS, because at the time I thought $30 (or however much it was) was "too much" to spend.

My biggest regretted purchase was 'Witch Hunter' 1 (an Ultraverse book) which I bought only to help me toward Ultraverse completion. It really is a terrible piece of bad-girl wannabe crap.

My biggest regretted non-purchase was not getting into VALIANT first time around...

Did you actually consider getting into Valiant? IE, looked at Magnus 1 and decided not to do it?

That's what I am trying to get at - something you actively considered and decided against. Not just something that was "around" when you were collecting.

The main sales guy at my then LCS was a good judge of what I liked. He tried drawing me in through Deathmate, but I just didn't 'get it' with the VALIANT characters (I was too Image-tastic at the time...

). However, that said when I saw Dr Mirage in Previews I was very tempted but then I didn't get for reasons I cannot recall.

I didn't pay too much attention to Valiant until Shadowman #1 (I liked the cover) and Archer and Armstrong 0. So I missed out, but not so much because I decided I didn't want them.

Believe it or not, my biggest purchase regret was Amazing Spider-Man 121 and 122.

I got caught in an ebay bidding war for these great books. The other bidder wanted them reallt bad, so I contacted the seller to ask for better/bigger scans as he claimed they were 9.4/9.6 quality. Unfortunately for me, I didn't wait for him to respond so I bidded more than I should have.

After sending them to CGC, they came back at 8.5 and 7.5. Needless to say, I was heartbroken.

I'm not sure I have a specific regretted non-purchase, but I wish I'd had a few more dollars when I was younger. I've been collecting for over 20 years and would love to have picked up some books at early 80s prices (like ASM 1, AF 15, etc...).

Exact same here, but in the end it wont matter (besides, it didnt go up to #50 and I had EVERY #50 of every project that came out). I thought that $30 was too much for ANY book. AND that was in my 'I really dont like Bob Layton days...' I have since had a total turnaround with him but a couple of reasons. He has been incredibly nice to me AND I had this idea 'nothing was better than the Shooter era books'. While I LOVE all the Shooter era books I recall 'back then and NOW when I read some of the Valiant Layton era books' that I love those as well. So I guess that I can say that I 'prefer' the Shooter era books but I also enjoy the hell out of the Layton era books.

But yeah, $30 bucks seemed like a lot of money back then. Now I totally understand that if you want certain bucks, ya can't always wait for them to show up in the $1.00 bins and surely not for fan projects.

My biggest regret was not picking up that Magnus #1 when I first saw them on the stands. At the time I wasn't really big into comic collecting yet. My only pull list was Transformers from Marvel and Legend of Zelda from Valiant. I picked up the book, liked the cover, but the title kinda made me put it back on the shelf. Two years later, when I really got into comic collecting, I saw Magnus #1 selling for $40-45. I literally smacked my head when i saw that.

I 'guess' that I do have one more... when Rai #3 came out, I literally LAUGHED out loud at the cover, I thought 'what POS is THIS ? A little white guy fighting a HUGE dragon with a SWORD !!!!! HAHAHAHAHA Where is his huge impossible to carry with one hand gun ? The overdeveloped biceps ? Where are the shoulderpads ? And not a babe with HUGE *SQUEE* next to him, just 'posing ? What kind of crap is THIS ? Dammit, when is the next issue of Youngblood coming out ?' (this is when the book was at cover mind you). I didnt read Rai until about a year and a half ago... it is now one of my most favorite of the Valiant characters.

Banging head on new wooden desk paid for and delivered to me here at the office by my company three days ago... real wood, man !!!! oh, and the ergo/mesh chair ? I could just fall asleep in this baby, cause.... it's so... comf....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I regret buying all the polybagged copies of X-force just for the different cards.

I regret not buying the Ultimate Spidy with all variants. They were there and very cheap. I already collect all the other spideys and I figured this was just an alterverse book and maybe I'll just wait for the TPB.

I paid too much for my copy of Grendel #1...
The seller seemed SURE that it was 9.4+ and it looked pretty good from the scan. There's definitely a very noticeable hairbend thingy on the spine that shows on the front cover. It's an awesome comic tho, and I'm glad to own it, but I'm pretty sure I should have waited...

I also regret buying all those *SQUEE* House of M crossovers... I had some money then and hadn't bought ALL the pieces of a crossover since Infinity Gauntlet, so I thought it'd be fun... I was wrong.

There's not too much I regret not buying... if I want something, I usually buy it b/c I'm TERRIBLE with money, and CitiBank LOOOOOVES me.

Biggest regret buying:

X-Force #1. Friggin' book didn't even have a variant cover (which is bad enough), I bought like 12 copies of this book to have all the cards and then "a set to open and a set to...." bla bla bla + probably an extra or two for whatever reason. God that was a fiasco, but I was a kid and the market boom and so on and so forth. Ah hell.

Biggest regret not buying:
I don't even know if I can tell the story without falling into tears but lets just say it involved a Tales of Suspense #39 in obvious medium high grade for a song and I passed it up and I don't even wanna get into why (song = less than 4 bills). Ah. hell

Biggest regret (not counting the x-force, x-men, image books that everyone is guilty of) is buying Web of Spider-Man annual #1. Single worst story ever. I have a complete run of Web including all the annuals except #1. After reading it I gave it away. Awful, just Awful.
Biggest non-buying regret is picking up Ulitmate Spider-Man #1 in the store, thumbing thru it and putting it back on the rack thinking this is the stupidest thing ever written. I still don't much care for the 'ultimate' idea, but hard to argue with its value.

falling into the trap of buying the early Image stuff, god I HATE those books! But bought them for later days to use as trade bait. Though, I do like MAXX.

worst missed buy--
I collect original art pages. And I'm a huge fan of Neil Gaiman and the Sandman line. My buddy had a page from Sandman #8 (the intro of DEATH) which had Sandman on it for $30. I was broke at the time..years later he puts it on eBay and sells it for $700!!!

Im with the Ultimate Spider man sale.. I thought,"Well.. its a number 1 and all.. but, geez, ANOTHER spiderman book..That wont fly at all. Na, Ill not waste my money." LOL.. Duh!! Spidey is almost ALWAYS a sure thing.. ah well.. hind sight is 20/20

I do remember that I bought 2 Solar #10's the first time.. then I sold it one eBay for $80

That was fun!

Other stuff I wish I didnt buy: Most of the image stuff... mostly Liefield stuff.. Even Spawn wasnt THAT great..Art was nice, concept was nice.. but the story .. well, I think I may have been able to write better.. Image was really all concept.. Liek I enjoyed the Wetworks stuff..

Also guilty of buying the X-Force #1 bagged issues...that seems way too popular of a regret. I'm also sitting on a bunch of early Image titles that just take up space in a long box.

Oh yeah, Superman #75. I was offered like $50 for the book the day it came out and passed it up.

I don't remember if there's any really good deals I've passed up in terms of getting stuff for myself. I've usually been pretty good at grabbing good deals when I have the cash.

Biggest regret not buying: Seeing a unity red, and a few gold books in the 50 cent boxes at a local used book store last March. For some unknown *SQUEE* reason i thought "i'll come back in a couple days and get 'em then...who's going to be looking through 50 cent boxes and notice them anyway". (I hadn't really collected comics in 10 or so years, just went into the book store to look at used dvd's) ...So, i go back and they're gone. In my 'only have myself to be mad at' rage, i go online and find this message board. Well...9 months later, my knowlege of valiant is 1000times greater and i'm very close to being 100%.
