Warlord...
...came to an end this week, with Winslade doing the art chores on the final issue. It was a very quiet death.
When I took the issue up to the counter, the kid who was hired by the new owner of my LCS starts off with "Well, it might be the last issue, but at least they *finally* got Bart Sears off of the book before it ended."
"They did? Well, then, you can have this back. I don't want it."
"Huh?"
"Yeah, see, I was buying it because I was digging the story AND the art. This is a different artist, a different writer, and it appears to have NOTHING to do with the storyline I was enjoying. Thank you for bringing that to my attention."
Several times I have told this particular employee that, although I do enjoy discussing comics, that he shouldn't express hostile or negative opinions about books I am buying or am interested in when I bring them to the counter - doing so could lose him sales, not just from me, but from other customers who overhear it. He could have said "hey - did you see that there's a new creative team on this issue of Warlord?" and I still would have bought it. But instead, he had to take a pot-shot (albeit a minor one) at an artist I enjoy.
Silly peoples.

When I was a retailer (hey, it's been a long time since I used that phrase in a post here!) I had to remind my workers of that very same principal. My philosophy was that every book on the rack is somebody's favorite and as a retailer, we should respect that.
I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

That is so true, I am glad there was one retalier who lived that philosophy.Heath wrote:When I was a retailer (hey, it's been a long time since I used that phrase in a post here!) It's real easy to not get in a situation like that. If someone is buying a book they either like it or are trying it out. Why would you start off with a negative statement ?
Ask how the person likes the book so far and you can judge by their response how to take the conversation. Your selling the things . . . jesus.

...and mayby even find out a different perpective...That's what I did...Always asking questions.Heath wrote:When I was a retailer (hey, it's been a long time since I used that phrase in a post here!) Its more personal, builds clientele/rapport and I learned alot
Ya know......Heath wrote:When I was a retailer (hey, it's been a long time since I used that phrase in a post here!) I had to remind my workers of that very same principal. My philosophy was that every book on the rack is somebody's favorite and as a retailer, we should respect that.

I love to rip on artists, writers, storylines, and just about everything else in comics. But somebody out there must like these guys (Liefeld comes to mind) or they wouldn't still be in the business. I rip on 'em here and I rip on 'em in the store, but I'll try to watch it and keep it to a "critical" review of their work. Less "this guy draws like a second grader on LSD" and more "he should work on anatomy/perspective".
Thanks for the perspective Heath!

Andy didn't draw this one. It's a totally unrelated issue since they actually canned the one Bart had finished. I was only collecting this for the Sears/Atiyeh art, so I should have known better than to buy #10. It was horrible.tarheelmarine wrote:How could he diss Any Smith's art? I always enjoyed his style because it is so similar to Bart Sears.

The cover was nice though. I hope Bart posts his original stuff on his blogsite (http://bartsears.com)
As my first Bruce Jones experience, I'm definitely not impressed.
