Signed books, good or bad?

Post by reekdog »

While checking out old posts, I see there's alot of talk about signed comics so, I wanted to post a question that may or may not have been discussed on this board.

What are your thoughts on signed books, good or bad? Does it add or take away value and what is the best pen to use? (ie. ball point, black sharpie, silver or gold,ect...) Also, what about signing a common book?

Thank's Greg.

Btw, what do VVSS and cVVSS (hope I got the initials right) mean and how do collectors get them?

VVSS= valiant validated signature series

A series of books the were signed by valiant artists and writers and then embossed and given a COA. Many of them are very limited and often command a decent bit of coin on ebay.

VcVSS=Valiantcomics.com Validated Signature Series

Hopefully a series of books sign by valiant people put out by the fans. This was started by Board member Dino. He purchased 40 Magnus 0 w/card from Bob Layton. He then had them signed by Bob Layton and Janet Jackson. They were also numbered. They include an embossed COA that is signed by greg and dino. You get these buy buying one from the person doing it. Dino sold all but 2 of the first VcVSS books a while back. One is going to be auctioned off on ebay and he keep one. Architect is doing the second in the series right now. You might contact him about getting that one, but they might be all sold out...

I hope that this sort of clears things up....oh and there is talk of a 3rd VcVSS book that will be graded by CGC....should be fun...

Dawgphan hit it on the nail.
Heres a quick rundown of what each book contains:

Armorines # 1 V.V.S.S. - embossed on front cover with VVSS COA & Valiant Mylar
Bloodshot # 0 V.V.S.S. - embossed on first page (inside) with VVSS COA & Valiant Mylar
Bloodshot # 6 V.V.S.S. - not embossed, no COA, various colours of signatures seen (gold, silver as well as the red), Wizard: Valiant Era states it is an add on to the VVSS. Came with Valiant Mylar (Valiant logo is bigger than on other VVSS's)
Eternal Warrior # 27 V.V.S.S. - embossed on front cover with VVSS COA & Valiant Mylar
Geomancer # 1 V.V.S.S. - embossed on first page (inside) with VVSS COA & Valiant Mylar
Magnus Robot Fighter # 25 V.V.S.S. - embossed on front cover with VVSS COA & Valiant Mylar
PSI-Lords # 1 V.V.S.S. - embossed on first page (inside) with VVSS COA & Valiant Mylar
Rai and the Future Force # 9 V.V.S.S. - embossed on front cover with VVSS COA & Valiant Mylar
Rai and the Future Force # 21 V.V.S.S. - embossed on front cover with VVSS COA & Valiant Mylar
Secret Weapons # 11 V.V.S.S. - embossed on front cover with VVSS COA & Valiant Mylar
Shadowman # 0 V.V.S.S. - embossed on first page (inside) with VVSS COA & Valiant Mylar
Timewalker # 1 V.V.S.S. - embossed on front cover with VVSS COA & Valiant Mylar
Turok: Dinosaur Hunter # 1 V.V.S.S. - embossed on back cover with VVSS COA & Valiant Mylar

X-O Database # 1 V.V.S.S. - not embossed, has COA, two different COA's avaliable, COA is just a photocopy, COA states it is a VVSS
Magnus #0 VcVSS - Part of the Valiantcomics.com series, comes with a COA.
Solar #1 VcVSS - Part of the Valiantcomics.com series, comes with a COA. Not yet released

Oh and as far as I know there are a few people interested in doing the third VcVSS so who knows what it will be.

If you're intending to sell, then the signatures are a factor. For rarer comics it tends to take away from the value. For cheapies it is the value.

For me it's just personal preference. I don't think I could sell any of mine; I'm too attached. And I think signatures are cool. I'd be happy if every one of my books was signed by the creators; in fact a bunch are.

The type of pen depends on the cover (if you want them signed on the cover). I have some X-O 0s signed in gold ink and you can barely see the writing. And I have some early Solars signed in plain black ink that look great.

Any interest in doing a VcVSS with Rai #0 or Bloodshot #1 chromium cover?

Well I think that the 3rd look is being looked into...I think that someone on this board might be looking into a Rai 0 book to commemorate something, but other than that...I dont know. I think that the 3rd VcVSS book will be the last one this year...I think that it was decided not to "blow our wad" on this project and just do a few every year...of course #2 is fairly wad worthy... :thumb: I think that Bloodshot 1 would be cool since we could probably get the 40-50 of them for free from most of the board members dumping some books on who ever did it...I know that I would be down for a couple. I am thinking that I would like to see a cgc signature series book for the next one...I think that would be super cool...

A third would be very cool and only benefit the boards and everyone involved. I think a final issue VcVSS would be cool also, or something to get Kevin Van Hook, Carol Van Hook (2 for 1 type of sigs here) Bernard Chang or Sean Chen involved on it, since they frequent the boards! (especially since the SLoDM got the axe)

or Darque Passages from the TPB!! Tons of people to choose from to sign that one!

I was thinking about it and I thought that maybe we could make a list of books that we could consider for VcVSS books. The books would need to have some significance as a book and yet be easy to find in numbers and grade. So no Harbinger 1.

Rai 0 easy to get and the "bible" of valiant
XO 1 most popular valiant title and not to hard to come by.
XO 5 would just look cool signed in silver ink
XO 0 since you can only get Shooter's and BWS's autographs so many times
Bloodshot 1 One of the more popular characters and a BWS chormium cover
A&A 0 Preunity? and easy to get...
ShadowMan 1

any others?

How about Turok 1 Gold, the regular issue is box filler, but the golds regularly sell for 8-12 on ebay and there are plenty of them. Plus it is a different creator group with sears and michelinie so we wouldn't be bugging the same guys on this one.

I just think Turok #1 has been done, no since doing it again! :) If we are going to put forth the time, effort and money lets do it on something that needs to be done, not to make a easily obtainable book just for the sake of doing it, we all have a Turok VVSS.

A gold book would be cool, maybe Unity #1 gold or Platinum!

You're right Arch, I was out to lunch when I threw that one out there! (I don't know what I was thinking) We mentioned earlier about a EW gold one maybe, but that would take bws and the same cast again, Mark

I just think a final issue VcVSS would be cool, just to tip the balance to the other end of the spectrum. With print runs around 10,000-15,000 I think those would be some cool books to tackle next.

It might be tough, but if we could find 50 copies of Harbinger 41 that could really be something.

Bloodshot #51 would be a great,, I likes that cover. We might not be able to find a lot of 50 copies of one book,, but Im sure a lot of us have multiple copies and can just send their own book + $$ for extra stuff(signatures, COA,etc). :thumb: I wouldnt mind sending my own books for this.

I wonder how rare this book really is. I wonder if we have 50 copies between us on the board.

Has anyone noticed the increase in price for Solar #1 since the VcVSS was announced? It seems to have increased more than say X-O Manowar #1 or Magnus #1. I wonder if its the VcVSS or just dumb luck that both books that were picked (Magnus #0 & Solar #1) have jumped in price. On the pre unity front, I think Rai #2, Rai #5 & Magnus #12 would be great for signing and they allow us to get different sig's then have already been done.

For an idea of how cool Rai #0 can be:

I was thinking that Ninjak #26 would make a cool VcVSS with its black cover, stained glass and nun!

Or perhaps Darque Passages!
