anyone paying attention to the change in the cost of comics over this year??? Most of the early offerings were in the $1.50 range...by the end of the year they were $2.50+(christ, mag 12 was 3.25 cover)...that is a HUGE increase. Did production costs change that much??? Were ALL comic prices doing that same thing...i.e did marvel and DC cover prices increase on the same order?

Magnus 12 was to be 40pages so that would explain some of the price increase.

Marvel was publishing most of their major titles 16 or 18 times a year around that time, and hence if you look at some issues of Wolverine they will be dated "early June" or "late June" and so forth. Also there was around this time a change in the paper and cover stock that the majors were using to the nice heavy stuff that really let the colors of the comics come alive, and they charged more for this. I believe some books were done in both formats, with the fancy paper, and the traditional news pulp that had always been used. Also, Marvel was hurting at the time, they had market share but were on the brink of bankruptcy and had no choice but to increase prices.

Great stuff X-O!

I missed a lot of this stuff in Previews at first, and only started picking up Valiants on the recommendation of a dude in an LCS.

Even before the stuff started to take off in value Don Thompson of CBG used to rave about how good Valiant was, and that guy was always right as far as my tastes.

I saved a bunch of my old Previews, too. Now you've got me wanting to go through them again.

Did you know, Don Thompson won the original cover to Flash #123 in 1961? Yup. Apparently it hung in the offices of CBG for YEARS.

I noticed that too. It's a shame that all comics started doing this cause I would probably still buy new books if the prices had not gotten so ridiculously out of line.

i was very suprised to see the listing in the old previews for the Magnus Steel nation vol.1 & v.2 uncut!!!!! I think thats huge! So somewhere in this universe that we live in there is a "directors cut" of magnus 1-4..simply amazing. Those books are so good, it just blows my mind. It also blows my mind that after all these years we are finding out new info on the publishing history of valiant. Now based on that is it possible to reprint magnus 0-4 because they dont contain any "valiant" characters, so if you had the rights to reprint magnus, you know, you could reprint those books , and maybe even the directors cut!!!
