How long..
How long do you usually wait once you paid for an item on an eBay auction to when you send a email asking "wtf" happened to your comic book? I usually do a friendly email about two weeks after I've paid for a particular item and around 3 weeks I'm starting to get miffed. 4 weeks and I consider fraud charges.
Of course this all assumes that they haven't responded to any of my emails. If they respond then I'm a little more forgiving. With email, pm, im and everything in between, there really isn't even an escuse for any seller to be communication silent for 4 weeks. Even if their cat fluffy passed on and they needed some griefing time

I believe Ebay has a policy of 30 days. Although, I know that when I have auctions up for sale I like to send within 5 days of payment and expect payment within 10 days. This way the customer is happy. I have been burned on 2 auctions in the past 2 years, luckily the auctions were only for about $10 a piece
... but those people get theirs in the end.... or at least bad karma. Treat your customers like you would want to be treated I always say.

If its been a week to nine days since I know for sure that they got my payment I start to worry a little. Like you though I don't email until about two weeks just in case "fluffy"
did die.
Four weeks is definitly the maximum that I would go without filing fraud charges. If its been even three weeks after I know they got the payment then I figure there's really no excuse for them to not have gotten ahold of me somehow. Even if their computer blows up they can still get online somewhere to at least notify me of the problem.
I would say that you should at least notify eBay of a potential problem (through their buyer protection program) by no later than the third week of no contact. That way at least eBay knows about it and if they are scammers then its less time that they can potentially get away with it.

1 week = Friendly e-mail asking when the item will be shipped.
2 weeks = Another e-mail asking when the item will be shipped. Not so friendly in tone. Very to the point, but not rude.
3 weeks = Start asking for a refund if the item cannot be delivered.
4 weeks = It's on like Donkey Kong. E-mail with threats of neg feedback & fraud fillings.
5 weeks = Get mid-evil on his a** anyway you can.

Looks like you're having the same problems I had back a month ago Whet. Usually between the 2nd and 3rd week is when I start feeling uneasy if I don't hear any response from the seller and the item haven't showed up at my door. If it's been close to 4 weeks and you still haven't gotten any response from the seller, I would just file a fraud claim with ebay and call your CC company to refund the payment. There is absolutely no reason why the seller cannot contact you unless he/she is hospitalized.

no mercy for fellow board members!!!!!!
Anyway, with the board members, if you deal with them enough, you get to know their habits and how long you can expect to wait, but if it's too long for your taste, go ahead and send them an e-mail or PM and ask what's up. If they don't answer that, then you can feel free to embarass them on the boards by asking WTF is going on with your deal.
I'm currently pulling my hair out trying to deal with a couple sellers on eBay who can't ship out in a time effective manner. One is really no big surprise (neatstuff is over a month and still hasn't shipped two of my orders) and another guy hasn't answered my e-mail from earlier in the week asking where my books are from auctions that ended three weeks ago.
By the way, how the heck do you get someone's e-mail address that you've completed a deal with on eBay? I tried the personal information request and it gave me everything but the guy's e-mail address. I also tried to use the ask a seller form on the eBay site, but I think half of the people who get those must just delete them without looking at it.
