Did Turok really belong in the Valiant Universe?

At least he was made to belong in it. And the whole universe was fitted around the Lost Land, so Turok was unavoidable. Though, personally I did not care much for him.

I thought he fit in Magnus 12. I really don't remember his series that well. I will have to re-read.

because of the Lost Land he could fit.....

but.... I never really got all the hype..... I remember Mag 12 was such a big deal (back in the 'hay...) the 1st app. of Turok.... crazy $$$$$, for what..... then the few pannels in Unity.... cool...but not that big a deal....

I have read some of the Turok books... there were all right.....

I think he could have been a great character.... but any Turok book needs to have superior writing.... he could have had A&A-type stories.....

the Turok books were alright... could have been better... could have been worse.....

he was forced in with a shoehorn. The friendship between him and Aric was forced, the Dinohunter was forced...no he didn't really belong. Not for the stories he was given.

I definitely think he belonged in the VU, it was just the way Valiant chose to use the character that always bothered me. Turok had lots of potential, but ultimately became kinda bland due to the writing.

IMHO, Turok 1 was the beginning of the end for the VH 1 universe. It is (and correct me if I am wrong) the first major book where VALIANT tried to do something Marvel/Image oriented by bringing in a hot artist to work on a new title instead of keeping things in house.

There was a lot of speculation at the second sparsely attended panel in NYC about how there were different rules for the talent that was hired from the outside vs. the in house artists, this is probably the beginning of those feelings.

Back on topic, did Turok belong? It was my least favorite of the VH1 titles by far, don't think I read 3 issues. With the right premise, and the right talent, I would think you could almost make any character "belong", they integrated the Magnus future timeline into the present time where Solar existed pretty well, how the Turok integration was supposed to work I could never understand.

The Turok and Aric connection worked in that both could be considered the noble savage displaced from their own time. Would have been nice if Shooter stuck around after Unity though to see how he would have developed this character more. My guess is that his initial concept would have been to clean up the mess from Unity in the modern day.

IMO, the first character that really began to disrupt the cohesion of the valiant universe was Ivar... Was Shooter around when he was published? Now this is a complete guess, but I could see Turok working in a similar manner as Ivar trying to get back to his time with his tribe and cleaning up the Unity mess along the way.

Certainly Turok worked because of the Lost Land, but, if you think about it, the Lost Land was only there so that Turok could be brought into the Universe. If Shooter hadn't obtained the right to Turok, we never would have gone to the Lost Land and Unity would have been something very different. (maybe better, maybe worse)

So as good as Unity was, it was a plot device to bring Turok into the universe...and as good as Unity was, I still don't think Turok belonged.

IMO, Turok was brought in because they had the rights to him, not because he was the right character.

i had no problem with him in the VU the lost land deal made perfect sense to me...it was just the series that didn't work so well.

Turok in the Lost Land worked for Valiant.

Turok in the modern world hunting dinosaurs/binosaurs... did NOT work. That's not Turok.

That was really the problem with Turok and the post unity stuff wasn't it. No Shooter.

Just re-reading some of the old VALIANTS I notice almost an immediate nosedive from 2,000ft into the pavement when the Massarsky - Jim Shooter has parted ways and we wish him the best of luck - letter came out at the back of the comics.

Turok got interesting with the reintro of the lost land. When Truman and Rags got going with issue #24 I think the book became one of Valiants best at the time. Now before it was a roller coaster of good and bad.
