Re-Reading: Solar #7

Post by xoken »

I thought we could do a book a day (that way people can read one every day or catch up on weekends), talk about it on its own, in the context of whats next, in regards to what expectations it creates and vote on how good it is. I don't have to be the one that posts everyday. If I miss a day or if someone wants to take over please do

For voting think of your single favourite comic book (not just VALIANT) as the benchmark - thats a 10 - and grade according to that.

Make sure to mention what you like'd about the book, what you didn't, what you wish they would have done, your favourite panels, lines of dialogue, little bits of trivia etc.

Wow!

I forgot how GOOD this issue is. Solar fights the XO armor the hole issue!

Also lays the ground work for a future XO issue.

GREAT art, GREAT story.

Pretty much non-stop action from beginning to end. Solar realizes that he is very powerful, but he is not a warrior. The X-O armor is almost able to defeat him. This story also makes a nice tie-in for upcoming events.

Again, "intelligent" is the keyword here. And nothing is to be taken for granted. First Solar makes fun of sci-fi cliches, and then he makes fun of himself, for having made fun of the cliches. We're learning a lot about the Valiant universe as it was intended to be, while Solar is learning. On the surface it's a fight-issue, but with so much more going on. And another great cover.

Another one of the greatest fights that Valiant ever did.

This is a situation we've all seen done before: two uber powerful guys duking it out in space. But we've never seen it done in a space governed real science. It's a cosmic school yard brawl on a playground of wonders.

And it's wonderful how we get to know our opponents. Yeah, Solar screwing up at the beginning and getting half his power beat out of him was a way to compensate for him being more powerful than X-O (a time honored comic tradition :) ) but it also showed us Solar's hubris and that he doesn't know much about fighting (what you think powers come with fighting skills automatically? )

And "exo" we have a real respect for. He's the champion of his people, fighting for their survival, and he won't give up (reminds me of a certain robot fighter...).

The shields on the Enterprise lines were priceless. The mentions of the aliens' gods and the armor thinking diferently than it's wearer were intrigueing.

A 9 :thumb: .

Continuity notes: One of the unexplained mysteries of VH-1: The fleet in X-O 1 is fighting something when Aric escapes. We assume it's Solar. But the ship is just outside of Earth when Aric escapes. Over in Solar, the fleet was clearly parked near Saturn before it makes it grand escape out of the solar system. Hm.

Yes, Solar does go back to "exo's" armor in a post-Shooter issue of X-O. In the issue, Solar leaves the ring there and says it's still on the alien's finger. What?!? :o If Solar wasn't creamating "exo" at the end of this issue I have no idea what he was doing! Like I said, post-Shooter comics are in another reality  .

Speaking of which, did the spider aliens have a homeworld while Shooter was there? I never recall one being mentioned. (If it ever was in a Shooter era comic let me know)

The reason I wonder is this: The aliens had everything they needed on that ship: humans for food, trees for worship, queens for breeding. As Shooter portrayed them, their space travel would take 100's if not 1000's of years (real space is a big place). And even if they ever saw their homeworld, wouldn't inhabiting one be violating their religion that wants to rid planets of ALL life but "the green"? Hm.

The VCB synopsis:

Near Saturn, Solar is in the process of destroying the massive Spider Alien invasion fleet. Within one of the alien ships, an alien warrior hurries to a chamber where the X-O Manowar armor is kept. Donning the Ignition Ring, the warrior puts on the armor and then exits the ship.
Once outside, the Manowarrior blasts Solar apart with his ion cannons. Solar recorporates and angrilly causes rocky particles from Saturn’s rings to fly at the alien fleet. Half of the crafts are destroyed by the barrage. Retaliating, the Manowarrior tackles Solar down to a nearby moon. There, he relentlessly pounds Solar. Solar begins to realize that this particular type of armor may well defeat him. With his energy dangerously depleated, Solar sends his hand flying off to the sun to gather more energy. But it will be a while before the hand returns, and Solar must stay alive until then.
Solar retreats to another moon with an energy-charged atmosphere. There, he soaks up a little life-sustaining energy and tries to defeat the pursuing Manowarrior in a variety of clever ways.
But he lacks the sufficient power to defeat the Manowar-armored alien. The Manowarrior catches Solar in his technological, energy-absorbing net. As the net slowly brings Solar towards discorporation, the Manowarrior speaks to him at last. He says that fusion-consuming Solar is like the Spider Alien gods and that he laments having to kill this sun-god. But as Solar is about to dissipate, his hand returns with energy from the sun. The power flowing back into Solar is ten times what he started with! And he burns away the techno-web and downs the Manowarrior. But, still, the warrior isn’t dead. He demands that Solar kill him, for the Spider gods demand death in combat. So, Solar enters the Manowar Armor and kills the warrior inside. Leaving the armored body on the Saturn moon, Solar departs.
