Wanted: Losing Scratch Off Lottery Tickets
I was wondering if anyone on here can send me losing scratch off lottery tickets. I'd take any and all. Everyone throws these away, but I've been collecting them. Acquiring from other states is a definite chore so I'm asking for anyone's help here. If you don't buy scratch off lottery tickets, can you ask family and friends. The more the better. I'd be willing to reimburse shipping. Please contact me if you're willing to help. Thanks.

I heard an urban legend that used non winning tickets can be saved as evidence for a tax deduction.... ?Philflound wrote:I was wondering if anyone on here can send me losing scratch off lottery tickets. That's smart, to collect what everyone else throws away. I've thrown away many losing tickets in my daysPhilflound wrote:I was wondering if anyone on here can send me losing scratch off lottery tickets. I'd take any and all. You can use the cost of losers to offset winnings.IMJ wrote:I heard an urban legend that used non winning tickets can be saved as evidence for a tax deduction.... ?Philflound wrote:I was wondering if anyone on here can send me losing scratch off lottery tickets. True. Phillfound seems to collect them though. It would be very hard to prove that you bought lotto tickets in several different states to the IRS if audited.ckb wrote:You can use the cost of losers to offset winnings.IMJ wrote:I heard an urban legend that used non winning tickets can be saved as evidence for a tax deduction.... ?Philflound wrote:I was wondering if anyone on here can send me losing scratch off lottery tickets. I work in a convenience store that sells the new North Carolina Education Lottery scratch-tickets... I'm sure I can scrape up a few losers. How many of each would you like???

I'll take any and all. Shipping could go first class, so it wouldn't cost too much.
As for tax write-offs, don't know if other states do it, but NJ used to allow it, but supposedly you cannot do it any longer. And I also believe tax write-offs could only be used no more than 3 years old.
It's hard to prove that you purchased so many tickets though. It would be rather easy to just ask people like I'm doing, or sift through garbage or pick them up off the streets if you were that desperate to use them to get a tax deduction. Also, how many people actually win enough money to even have to fill out the tax papers? In NJ, it's $599 and under you don't have to claim.
Addressing the question as to how I started collecting. I only began collecting this week. If I had thought of this 10 years ago, I would have amassed thousands by now. Early last week I was trying to clean off my computer desk here in front of me a little. I had the New York Lottery King Kong Millions tickets sitting here from last year, when the new movie had premiered. There was a life sized King Kong in the middle of Times Square that day. Since I live right across from NYC, my wife and I decided to go and play the lottery, which was ending on that day, and spend some time in the city. Anyway, the tickets have been sitting on my desk since then and I picked them up and was about to toss them. It then dawned on me the words King Kong at the top. Now this is a normal pink lottery ticket with no special pictures or anything. But if I found a King Kong collector, maybe they would buy it because of the historical value, and nostalgic value. I can't say they would, but if you are collector, then you can look at a few things.
1. The most valuable collections or pieces of a collection are the ones that people threw away.
2. Anything related to movies, television, characters, cartoons, etc have some type of collectible value.
3. People collect some of the "strangest" collectibles out there. Bottle caps, irons, casino chips, wooden nickels, ice cream scoops, etc.
4. Scratch off lottery tickets are colorful, and I believe are only available for 1 year.
5. Each state features their own scratch off ticket, so acquiring a particular "theme" can be difficult.
So it dawned on me that if I find them interesting, why wouldn't others. Also, I may start a trend. People may realize that they could be cool to collect, and decide to start their own collection.
One thing of note, please don't send me ripped, stained, or creased tickets. Like any other collectible, condition does mean a lot. What I do is scratch off all the scratchable part to make it look nice and neat. I'm going to be putting them in either a scrapbook or photo album. Any denomination is acceptable.
The one sad thing is that last year there was one $1 scratchoff called Count Cashula, and featured a vampire. It came out around Halloween. I think it's gone and I never saved one. Sort of disappointed because it was cool. Now you understand why I want them.
As for what I own, I don't have too many yet, but have people holding some for me. Among the ones I have in my possession are Monopoly, Price is Right, Pink Panther, a golf one with Vijay Singh on it, Wheel of Fortune, and a couple pertaining to pirates. Can you see where I'm going with this? The ones I mentioned have nostalgic value. If you're a die-hard fan of Monopoly, you know that there are hundreds of different versions out there. Maybe you want something different. A scratch off from NJ could be a great addition.
I also discovered there was a Pink Panther from 2005 which has a different photo. My friend is keeping that one. See, I already got one person who may start to keep a few of their own. Just like any other hobby, you can pick and choose what you'll keep. And similar to stamps or baseball cards, they really don't take up much room collecting wise. 500 scratch offs can fit in a book, while 500 record albums take up a good 1/4 of your room.
Hope that answers your question and I appreciate any and all you are able to send. Reimbursement can be sent thru paypal. Or possibly I can send a few comics to people. Have to update the list though.

I actually spoke with a couple of people who own unscratched tickets or sent them to collectors who kept them unscratched. I could not do that. With my luck, I'd be holding the jackpot and wouldn't know it. It's much easier to keep vintage packs of cards sealed.
As for the AOL disks/CDs, I would always erase and reuse the diskettes back in the day. The CDs I've seen some great art made with. I think my wife saved quite a few of them. Think she was going to make something with them but never got around to it.

Well, believe it or not I do collect AOL discs. I've got two paper boxes full of them. It's actuallly not a bad hobby...
1) It's free.
2) It doesn't take up much space.
3) It's the only physical artifact from the beginning of the internet, which is one of the most inportant innovations ever.
Mind you, I only collect casually. I pick up the new stuff and take offered discs from people's desk when they're cleaning them out. I'm not about to start paying for them.
Again, it's what people throw out today that can be worth so much tomorrow (didn't Action Comics #1 have a print run in the millions?)

You must see lots of people on hard times buying those tickets. My wife and I were driving home on night and we stopped in a store off of 70 to fill up and get a drink. I saw quite a few people dropping $20 + on tickets, and none of them looked like they afford to be throwing money away.slym2none wrote:I work in a convenience store that sells the new North Carolina Education Lottery scratch-tickets... What amazes me is that people will buy a $1 ticket, win $5, and BUY $5 WORTH OF TICKETS! If I won $5 off of a $1 bet, I'm taking my money and going home. (Of course, I know the odds of winning these things because I read the pamphlets when they come out - most people don't.)tarheelmarine wrote:You must see lots of people on hard times buying those tickets. So, has anyone amassed a nice lot for me yet? Today I went to the store and played my Mega Millions for tomorrow night.
While I was there, the owner of the store pointed out the new Halloween $1 scratch off. Like I mentioned in an earlier post, I missed saving the Count Cashula from last year. This year it's called Thrills, Chills, and Bills and features cool looking pumpkins on it. I bought 3 of these and a pirate type called Treasure Chest for $2. Total spent was $8 with the 3 Mega Millions.
I have my lucky penny. This is the penny that seems to hit about 1 every 3-4 tickets. Out of like $35 spent on scratch offs, I think I've recouped almost all of it, somewhere between $30-32.
Anyway, I got home and got my lucky penny. I pulled the pirate one first. Last time I carefully was scratching this, I hit $10. This time I carefully scratched again. Nice and slow. I kept losing. Good, I can keep this one. I get to the last game where you have to match 3 gold bars in a tic tac toe type of game. Frig it that I don't win $10 again. I lost on my Halloween ones, but now I'm up $2. I told my wife if she goes to the store to cash it for me, she can have $4 for her own scratch offs and give me back $6. So she comes back with a Pinball Wizard for $3, which has some real cool art, and a $1 Halloween ticket. She loses on the Wizard and wins $2 on the Halloween. So we broke even again and I acquired more tickets.
I now have the store owner saving me tickets. He's real cool about things. I'll probably stop in every couple of days, since he alternates with his brother on days working.
So I'd appreciate anyone saving these for me. I would prefer anything in the category of tv, cartoon characters, movies, or other type of collectible genre, but I'll pretty much take anything. Thanks in advance. Please email me at pdispenza@verizon.net

Heh - I don't allow scratching any ticket at the counter. I have a sign (which they try to ignore) and I have a loud voice. That one always works.Daniel Jackson wrote:The people that are aggrevating are the ones that buy a ticket, scratch it off real quick, win 2 bucks and ask for two more tickets while other people are standing in line.

I wish you'd teach the clerks around here how to do that. Old folks are usually the worst about it.slym2none wrote:Heh - I don't allow scratching any ticket at the counter.
